Halo 5 Microtransactions Have Now Generated At Least $1.5 Million

Funds bring total Halo World Championship prize pool to $2.5 million.

Whatever your opinion is about microtransactions, they are popular, and this continues to be true for Halo 5: Guardians. Microsoft has now confirmed that sales from the game's Req packs have generated at least $1.5 million. This is up from $1 million in December 2015, $700,000 as of November 19, and $500,000 as of November 5.

As Microsoft said in the past, these funds will be added to the Halo World Championship prize pool, lifting the total prize purse to $2.5 million. The prize pool started at $1 million.

"Since we first announced a starting prize pool of $1 million at Gamescom 2015, the winnings for the Halo World Championship has grown immensely due to community crowdfunding via the Halo 5: Guardians Req system," Microsoft said today.

One of the latest Halo 5 microtransactions released for the game was a $25 Arena Req bundle. It adds to Halo 5's existing lineup of microtransaction offers that range in price from $2-$100. You can see all of the offerings here on Halo 5's website.

Halo 5 microtransaction revenue is likely even higher than $1.5 million. As Microsoft said before, only a "portion" of Req bundle sales are contributed to the Halo World Championship prize pool.

The prize pool is now locked and will not go any higher. The winning team the Halo World Championship will take home $1 million, which Microsoft says is the "biggest individual prize pool in console esports history."

Finally, Microsoft announced the 16 teams that will compete in the Halo World Championship 2016 finals this March. Eight teams, including Evil Geniuses and Denial, are from North America, while the rest represent places like Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Asian, and Latin America.

The championship weekend takes place March 18-20 at a venue in Hollywood to be announced on March 4.

As much as I think MTs are a plague upon full priced games, this is actually an incredibly surprising, and wonderful use of those funds.

@wretch1d: And idiots is not what's missing in Halo, CoD, Destiny, android games etc. These companies are smart, they aim at dumb/clueless customers for easy money but hey! that's not all, these customers/"gamers" are so dumb that they will defend MT in their beloved games and you won't even need to PR damage control dirty practices in your game.

This is what's happening. Gaming becomes more popular, more dumbasses join gaming, filthy companies see the opportunity and fill their games with a bunch of MT cuz they know it'll print them money and milk those stupid "gamers" dry.

@silversix_: That is EXACTLY what is happening. The halo fan boys of this generation even try to defend MTs and downvote anyone else with a differing opinion to oblivion on the forums.

Only one of these classes are avid Halo players spending all their parents money: Photons, Protons, Neutrons, Morons.

Death to microtransactions and hang the families of all those behind implementing them in paid for games!

As much as I love Halo, I'm totally against microtransactions in big IP AAA games. We already pay the big bucks to play it and they want us to pay more money to stay competitive against others? Nope I say!

@UziKill: Technically games are cheaper than they've ever been once you adjust for inflation.

@UziKill: If you are good enough at the game you don't need req packs :/. A BR is all I need to kick people's ass in Warzone.

Avatar image for NoahRoalson

@freeryu: Just imagine if that skilled player dumped 50$ on req packs. Imagine how large and powerful his/her arsenal would be then. It's a joke.

Avatar image for UziKill

@freeryu: Well many will buy them. It's the concept I don't approve of, not the gamers who buy the packs. You may not need them in Halo but if they start doing that in all the AAA games you may find yourself spending extra money as well in some other game. Also it's not so much about needing the packs, but more wanting them because some of your friends have cooler stuff than you... pressure of the many. It's a marketing trick and that's what they're really exploiting.

@UziKill: Devs know there are people out there that want the quickest and easiest way to the top. Us as gamers can't stop others from them. The way things are going now req packs are here to stay. It sucks because there isn't a skillful way to earn cool armor anymore.

An article titled with "Halo 5" and... "Microtransaction" turns out to be about the HCS competitive league. Hater click bait. Halo is hated just as much as its loved. Its the perfect click bait article.

How about we cover how much money the microtransactions are bringing in in other games that don't have free DLC, and a fully supported competitive league? You know... the 90% of AAA games that have them, AND OR... expensive season passes, AND OR...or 40 $3 Add-ons that I couldn't get in game unless I payed for it.

Avatar image for Spartan_418
Spartan_418

Yep, and normal $10 map packs could have generated many times that.

So far, 343 has only added one new, unique, non-Remix/non-Forge map. February update will add another map and some new modes, which is a step in the right direction, but so far this free DLC plan has provided much less in quality and quantity than past Halos.

Avatar image for obsidian_born

@Spartan_418:

I hardly ever played any of the map packs because hardly anybody bought them. So... now everybody has them.

@NoahRoalson: You can buy the cheapest req pack(one game)and be a huge difference in Warzone.

Avatar image for NoahRoalson

@freeryu: So somebody who puts down real money will only be more powerful in Warzone.

Avatar image for freeryu

@NoahRoalson: I can make a vid of me just using a BR and topping leaderboards and winning. Will that prove it?

Avatar image for wretch1d
Wretch1d

@freeryu: You're right man but ive been in matches where it seems like an endless stream of damn tanks and ghosts etc, if your group doesnt have that to throw back you are at a serious disadvantage, it doesnt happen a whole lot as you have to have those cards but it does happen, and the armor system is in the Req packs, instead of earning new armor with xp its randomized through the req packs, that i hated.

Avatar image for NoahRoalson
NoahRoalson

@wretch1d: Exactly. I hardly play Warzone because I hate losing to a vehicle spam when my team can't possibly counter it.

Avatar image for freeryu
FreeRyu

@wretch1d: "endless stream of tanks and ghosts". I know what ya mean. I see that often. Trying to destroy the enemy core with 4 tanks camping in the back and ghost driving in and out is a huge pain in the ass lol. I agree the armor system is fucking stupid. Having recon armor back then meant you did those hard ass Vidmasters challenges but now you get it out of a req pack ._. It's not the stuff of legend anymore.

Avatar image for NoahRoalson
NoahRoalson

@freeryu: There is nothing to prove to me. I know it is possible to do well without paying a cent extra. However, somebody who pays real money and loads up on Req Weapons and Vehicles does have an advantage over the rest of us. As you said, just buying the cheapest pack can make a difference. So whereas I get a free pack every couple of games, people who pay are going to get them much more frequently. If I want a good pack I have to wait at least several games. Even then, I only have a chance at getting something new/rare. Somebody who pays can get the packs more frequently and therefor have a higher chance of receiving good items.

Hey kids, do you like to be nickel and dimed for contents / gameplay mechanics that already should've been implemented in the game? Well, look no further. Microtransactions is just the thing for you. That'll be $1.99 for each reload and another $5 bucks for that exotic assault rifle.

Avatar image for ef56sd

@berserker66666: Gee, another misinformed hipster. You fail to realize that games have BEEN $60 for the last 15 years. That's a price that stood even though NOTHING cost the same as it did in 2001. Not to mention NO CHARGE for extra maps or game types.

Avatar image for berserker66666
berserker66666

@celeritasgamer1: Yes defend some more and be proud of yourself. Companies need people like you to defend their crappy microtransaction system to milk players dry. Without you guys, we might have been able to enjoy games that comes out in complete form without the "Down payment". Its a heresy right? Maybe you can convince other players to spend their hard earned money on crap like these. Keep up the awsm work lol

Avatar image for 25kim25

@berserker66666: The fact that you obviously didnt play Halo 5 makes all your arguments invalid. There are many types of microtransactions, bad ones (most of them, and I agree with you) and good ones (like Halo 5's system).

I never bought anything in-game on Halo 5 and I'm just as good as anyone else with most of the Warzone REQs.

And there is the fund for the Championship thing, that every single penny that comes from microtransactions will be added to the Halo World Championship prize pool. But that is already in the article above, I'm pretty sure you read it before start talking random bullshit on the comment section right?
