Half-life 3 will not be exclusive to Steam OS

Valve confirms they will not make exclusive games for their Steam OS or any Steam Machines.

For any gamers worried Half-life 3, the PC-gaming holy grail, might be locked to Valve's upcoming console, Greg Coomer from Valve reassures you that, "You won’t see an exclusive killer app for SteamOS from us. We’re not going to be doing that kind of thing."

Speaking in an interview with IGN, representatives from Valve provided new details on experience Steam OS will provide. And the non-exclusive philosophy trickles down to third-party developers as well. “Whenever we talk to third-party partners, we encourage them to put their games in as many places as possible, including not on our platforms," said Valve's Anna Sweet.

"We think that customers are everywhere, and they want to put their games wherever customers are. That would go against our whole philosophy, to launch something that’s exclusive to SteamOS or Steam machines.”

Valve's ultimate plan is to make their OS "as platform- and context-agnostic as possible," said Coomer. "You shouldn’t have to shed that every generation, or even slightly shed it." He did note that smaller, independent developers may not have the resources to develop for more than one platform, but for everyone else, "it would be pretty silly...to limit their game to a certain platform."

Maybe I missed something... why would Valve make Half-Life 3 exclusive to Steam OS? Did anyone for a minute believe this would be the case? It's Valve FFS, not EA Games, Microsoft or Ubisoft. Either way, there's almost no proof Half-Life 3 will ever come out. Keep milking Half-Life 3 for all its worth, Gamespot!

I wish exclusives didn't exist, actually. That way everyone can experience what developers make. A universal platform, in other words.

The question is though, what will exclusivists wave at the competition, then?

@gamingnerd121 Exclusives are a great way for a new company to start up since they don't cost as much to make and they allow you to experiment (Unless you're on a console in which case you basically SONY, MS or Nintendo's bitch for the entire development period). Problem is that most exclusive remain so indefinitely, instead of eventually being ported to other platforms.

In an ideal world new companies would start out on the PC and then eventually port their games to consoles, once they acquired sufficient experience.

@adrianjarca I'm hoping that less and less games stay exclusive, indefinitely. I think that's one of the things Valve work for, instead of locking you down because of a contract. I'm mainly a PC gamer myself, but i'd love to play games like Tales as well.

Those games are just one example, and i believe there are many potential customers out there.

With the rise of potential power between 2014 - 2016, we can potentially see emulation of 360 exclusive titles. PS3 not so much, because of the messy architecture developers disliked.

There's really no reason for them to put Half-Life 3 in the title for this article since it wasn't even about the game at all. I was slightly worried that devs might decide to make games only for SteamOS though, but it looks like my worries were unfounded thankfully. :)

Lol Coomer never mentioned Half-life 3 (not specifically), and you just went ahead and added it to the title.

PC has best best game developers. Valve, CDPR and 4A games have always cared about consumer more than any developer on any platform.

This shows Valve are not afraid like Sony or Microsoft. Exclusive games on PS and Xbox only makes those plastic boxes sell.

if you mention 4A, then at least you should mention Cloud Imperium, Maxis, Creative Assembly, Relic, DICE and Frictional.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Valve's got guts. Instead of using a paywall for online multiplayer and discounts like Sony's PS4 or almost everything on Microsoft's Crossbone, Valve's not doing those things on their Steam Rollers. I have to hand it to Valve. I just hope these things have a CD/DVD drive. It would be nice to be able to use like a DVD player and listen to CDs. If it has blu-ray support, that's an added bonus, I suppose. I guess I could buy an external one and plug it into the system if there isn't one.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Uh dude a "Steam Machine" would technically be anything that uses SteamOS which could basically run on any modern computer anyway. It's no different that making your own computer and installing Windows, but instead you install SteamOS.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Not unless PC's become more accessible to consumers. One reason consoles do so well is because many gamers don't want to deal with PC stuff, they just want to jump straight into the gaming. Consoles make that pretty easy. Not to mention they are completely dedicated to gaming. We'll see if the Steam Machine does this for PC gaming. If so, they could give the big three a run for their money.

<< LINK REMOVED >> MS needs to give Rare's IP's to either Valve, Nintendo, or another worthy part and leave. Sony should go third party like Sega or sell their franchises to a worthy party. I hate how both plan to use cloud in their system in some way and require a fee to play games online.

@Joseph Tomasko They mentioned steam machines and Valve OS,not PC as a whole.Even if it were to be a multiplatform title,it would sell really well on all platforms.
