Guitar Hero: Gone for good or just for now?

Analysts disagree on whether Activision could have done things differently to keep rhythm series viable, but expect Tony Hawk to make an eventual return.

Activision broke up the band yesterday, officially shutting down its Guitar Hero business unit, cancelling the 2011 installment of the series and calling an end to the flow of new downloadable content for the series. Today, analysts are split on whether the franchise could have avoided this fate and if they expect Activision to eventually attempt a comeback for the series.

Proof the next album is always just a reunion away.
Proof the next album is always just a reunion away.

Speaking with GameSpot today, Electronic Entertainment Design and Research analyst Jesse Divnich downplayed the suggestion that Activision's enthusiastic release schedule for the series--including seven separate Hero titles in 2009 alone--contributed to its decline.

"When the first Guitar Hero was sold, the time clock of its success and ultimate demise started and there wasn't a single strategy Activision could have implemented to hinder it," Divnich said. "If Activision hadn't flooded the market, someone else would have, and the state of the music genre in 2011 would have been unchanged. There is absolutely nothing Activision nor anyone could have done to save the music genre."

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said Activision could have likely improved the Guitar Hero franchise's life span if had better managed the games' tracklists and instrument peripherals.

"The biggest flaw in the model was that the peripherals were always 'good enough,'" Pachter said, "meaning that once you bought the band kit, you didn't need to upgrade to next year's version. One of the selling points was the breadth of the music offering, and most games had 60-80 songs, so it was tough to justify buying another game when you still had 40 songs you hadn't tried on last year's version."

While Pachter believes there will always be some demand for the Rock Band and Guitar Hero style of rhythm game, it's not one he expects Activision to satisfy, saying simply, "I think Guitar Hero is gone for good."

Meanwhile, Divnich thinks the Guitar Hero franchise is not dead, but merely "hibernating."

"It may take three to five years, and likely a whole new generation of consoles, but I see a possibility of a short revival in the future," Divnich said. "Activision is a methodical company, and their continued dominance hinges on the growth of their franchises, not the decline. The resources that would have been used to create the next Guitar Hero will be best served on creating new intellectual properties."

While the pair of gaming prognosticators split on the fate of Guitar Hero, they found themselves in closer agreement on the future of the Tony Hawk franchise, which Activision also ruled out of its 2011 lineup. Pachter said the long-rolling skateboarding series is simply taking a breather, while Divnich said it would return for the next generation of consoles "at the latest."

Activision did kill Guitar Hero by milking the series. Example, in Warriors of Rock, you could export some of the songs from past Guitar Hero games like Smash Hits(including Free Bird by Lynrnd Skinner). Now they expect you to buy Free Bird for $1.99 plus tax off the Warriors of Rock music store. Proven my point

"If Activision hadn't flooded the market, someone else would have" HAH, bullcrap. Activision managed that series piss-poorly, and severely damaged the genre as a whole by releasing so many games in 2009. Rock Band will survive because of their commitment to quality (over quantity) and ingenuity in making the instrument controllers more like actual instruments

On another GameSpot article, I read something about the cost of getting the songs into the games... I believe that could've been handled in a better way, spending less money on new songs by negotiating more effectively; I do agree, though, that the music genre is all about hype, so it doesn't last long.

They're already talking about the "Next Generation" of consoles. Been seeing this coming for a while now actually. I'm thinking by 2012-2013 we'll be seeing prototypes of the next major consoles coming out.

"If Activision hadn't flooded the market, someone else would have, and the state of the music genre in 2011 would have been unchanged. There is absolutely nothing Activision nor anyone could have done to save the music genre." Yah, except make better games, with bigger and better soundtracks.

personally I liked guitar hero more then RockBand, and I own and played both back when it was big. My issue has always been that the drums on rockband, the thing everyone liked about it, didn't match to any actual drum on a drum set, they all played different beats. The guitar her drums actually feel like your playing the drums. Plus I like hard rock and metal so guitar hero always appealed to me more in that sense. stupid weezer songs and what not....

Its funnhy that he actually thinks things wouldn't be any different if Activision didn't flood the market so bad. If there were going to be other games trying to compete, they would have come out anyway. Its just that when you crank out game after game thats exactlly the same as the last one... people get tierd of it really quick (unless its Call of Duty for some reason)... and thats why GH died. Its a shame, but once you did one game.... its a really hard series to to anything else with.

The problem with rhythm games is that its back to where it was before the first guitar hero, its a niche genre again. It's only appealing to a certain group of people, instead of practically everyone like it was in 2008. granted that the group this game now appeals to is much larger than 2004. But the genre is not dead. it just no longer has the spotlight.

@ADDADAC Tell that to the 7 million who stupidly bought it on day one, and the many who continue to buy it. Gamespot is anti-Activision, society isn't, especially 14 year olds.

I hope it's not done. I really like Guitar Hero. Activision didn't do the series any favors by releasing so many games in such a short period of time (2009 comes to mind). Warriors of Rock is a great game and I know it could have be improved upon with future releases, but I'll have to wait and see now.

Im tired of these people leaving comments like "Call of Duty will be next, I swear it", like they think they're original and nobody else is thinking it. People have already said it, there is no need to say it 500 more times.

It is time to give music games a rest, but the funding from this cut will be used to run call of duty further into the ground, but canceling true crime? They seriously love their cod.

About time. I stopped playing GH about 4 months after i got the first one and i still didn't beat the whole thing. The only thing that changed from game to game was the songs and they all sucked. Next up on the block is CoD.

They should have released one every 2-3 years, kinda like the way Rock Band did. Instead they were releasing 10 games a year and that's what killed the franchise.

Can't say I didn't see this coming. Activision milked the genre plain and simple. Instead of offering incremental changes to the series and evolving a genre, like first person shooters, they released games that had no purpose but to add another 70 songs. Case in point: Smash Hits. What was the point of this game and why couldn't every song just have been released as DLC?

The Beatles Rock Band is the highest note that the music game genre will hit. Guitar Hero was fun at first with the first 2 games, but after that, it became really cheesy. Glad GH is finally done with!
