Guitar Hero: Gone for good or just for now?

Analysts disagree on whether Activision could have done things differently to keep rhythm series viable, but expect Tony Hawk to make an eventual return.

Activision broke up the band yesterday, officially shutting down its Guitar Hero business unit, cancelling the 2011 installment of the series and calling an end to the flow of new downloadable content for the series. Today, analysts are split on whether the franchise could have avoided this fate and if they expect Activision to eventually attempt a comeback for the series.

Proof the next album is always just a reunion away.
Proof the next album is always just a reunion away.

Speaking with GameSpot today, Electronic Entertainment Design and Research analyst Jesse Divnich downplayed the suggestion that Activision's enthusiastic release schedule for the series--including seven separate Hero titles in 2009 alone--contributed to its decline.

"When the first Guitar Hero was sold, the time clock of its success and ultimate demise started and there wasn't a single strategy Activision could have implemented to hinder it," Divnich said. "If Activision hadn't flooded the market, someone else would have, and the state of the music genre in 2011 would have been unchanged. There is absolutely nothing Activision nor anyone could have done to save the music genre."

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said Activision could have likely improved the Guitar Hero franchise's life span if had better managed the games' tracklists and instrument peripherals.

"The biggest flaw in the model was that the peripherals were always 'good enough,'" Pachter said, "meaning that once you bought the band kit, you didn't need to upgrade to next year's version. One of the selling points was the breadth of the music offering, and most games had 60-80 songs, so it was tough to justify buying another game when you still had 40 songs you hadn't tried on last year's version."

While Pachter believes there will always be some demand for the Rock Band and Guitar Hero style of rhythm game, it's not one he expects Activision to satisfy, saying simply, "I think Guitar Hero is gone for good."

Meanwhile, Divnich thinks the Guitar Hero franchise is not dead, but merely "hibernating."

"It may take three to five years, and likely a whole new generation of consoles, but I see a possibility of a short revival in the future," Divnich said. "Activision is a methodical company, and their continued dominance hinges on the growth of their franchises, not the decline. The resources that would have been used to create the next Guitar Hero will be best served on creating new intellectual properties."

While the pair of gaming prognosticators split on the fate of Guitar Hero, they found themselves in closer agreement on the future of the Tony Hawk franchise, which Activision also ruled out of its 2011 lineup. Pachter said the long-rolling skateboarding series is simply taking a breather, while Divnich said it would return for the next generation of consoles "at the latest."

@morde10668, that is a terrible analogy, food and games aren't comparable; for one, games are not a one time use the same way food is. I'm sure a lot of people will go to their favourite restaurant and order the same meal more than 17 times in the course of several years.

"The biggest flaw in the model was that the peripherals were always 'good enough,'" Pachter said, "meaning that once you bought the band kit, you didn't need to upgrade to next year's version. Right, so if the peripherals sucked and you had to blow a mint on new ones every year that would have really helped the genre stay alive. If it ever would have taken off under that model. Well, he's probably not saying the peripherals should have sucked. Maybe he's just pointing out an inherent problem. Anyway, games need to change. You can't just release the same game with different box art, you have to make it better or else we've been there and done that, and you can't do that very well in one years time every year let alone every other month.

if they didn't, someone else would have? i highly doubt it. if they didn't, then the genre would still be popular and every developer would know not to release a game every 2 months. but because Activision got greedy, they ultimately destroyed what was once a great IP and genre.

good news. im sick of guitar hero games. they should have done only ONE game, with all the other songs downloable, instead of making 300 guitar heros with 20 songs each. im glad this happened.

Why are people so glad to see the franchise gone? No one forced people to hand over cash to buy the games, and I would say that in light of the dislike within these comments, I would suggest they wouldn't have bought them anyhow. Personally, I think it's unfortunate GH will have no more releases. I do think it over saturated a market, but also think that GH: Metallica had some awesome tunes that appealed to my particular taste, far more than The Beatles. The series were fun for parties, some had better tracks than others but I also didn't have a gun pointed at my skull so didn't feel I was forced to buy any of them other than those I wanted to guitar / drum to. That's the great thing about being adults, you get to have a say in what you buy. Anyhow, pity there wont be future games for me to select whether the tracks justify a new purchase or not. Meanwhile, the games I did buy won't ruin my health by sitting around waiting to be played, so I feel no malice towards the franchise.

After the 7 GH games in 2007, the lack of innovative features and the terrible post-launch support I hope they kill it.

@higgydiggy Same needs to be said for the horrible setlist the GH series has always had. If not for DLC, I wouldn't have ever wanted to play GH as much as I did.

I could care less, never liked the games never even bought them and played them a few times before I got bored and played Perfect Dark 64 or Halo CE again. Whats so great about these games anyways they wanted a crap load of money for them, and they never improved it just released another disc with a bunch of songs never changed. Hell the graphics were crapy enough as it is were a joke. I know that graphics wer enothing for this but if they are gonna make you watch stupid looking models that look like crack heads why not either make them funny or realistic looking?

"If Activision hadn't flooded the market, someone else would have, and the state of the music genre in 2011 would have been unchanged. There is absolutely nothing Activision nor anyone could have done to save the music genre." No, no one else would have. Kotick had stated their business model quite clearly: A new installment every year. Bleed the IP dry for everything it's worth. Harmonix didn't even come close to do doing this. The only thing I can think of is EA, but a new sports title every year is more justified (though honestly, not much more so).

I'm glad to see it gone. After Rock Band started and I realized what a music game SHOULD be, all Guitar Hero has been able to do for me is ignite a burning rage inside whenever I saw another game. Guitar Hero, may you rest in...burn in hell, GH.

It seems like there has been a a lot of reboots going on in the gaming industry like Devil May Cry or Tomb Raider. I got a feeling that in the next few years we are going to hear about a reboot of the Guitar Hero series, so I don't think Guitar Hero is gone quite yet.

Guitar hero would've been more interesting if you did things like in the GH 2 commercial. If you were actually a hero, with like a mission mode or something, instead of playing on a bunch slightly different stages static audience. Mission like stopping a meteor with your rock, or defeating a demon, something interesting. No matter how many songs they added, the games were all basically the same, like COD but worse. If the games had been more aesthetically pleasing and offered a change of environment they might have done a lot better.

I liked how Activision pretty much said, yeah we flooded the market. And them shutting the GH part down is nothing more than let's get people talking about GH again and then at E3 we will announce a new GH for 2012 with tambourine add-on and people will rejoice!

They flooded the market and have nearly succeeded in killing the genre. The games were easy to make and if there's one thing Activision loves it's easy money. They shot themselves in the foot in the process though. If anybody decides to make a new music game they need to focus on making the system tighter and more game-like. As it was, the newer music games just felt like the songs were "skins" layered over the same track. Didn't feel like gaming at all.

Gone for good. Those "games" where planned to burn fast with the casual crowd, always hungry for a new toy, and be left to die since day one. Time has come for them to vanish.

It looks like another franchise got through the milking hands of Activision. Everyone liked Guitar Hero when it was new. I remember Guitar Hero 3 was just phenomenal. Unfortunately, CoD is also facing the same "milky" faith... I guess it runs in Activision's genes to milk...

This is what happens when you milk a franchise to hard, and fail to adapt to competition. COD is starting on that path, but its fanbase is so huge I dont think it will be affected anytime soon, or ever.

Activision are milking FPS also... I tend to agree, not many people will invest in multiple sets of instruments... people will still pull it out at parties, but for the most part... it gets old
