Director Guillermo del Toro has spoken out again to criticize Konami, the publisher he was working with for the canceled Hideo Kojima game, Silent Hills.

"F**k Konami," was his message. Tweeting today on Christmas, del Toro joked about that being as true as other messages this time of year. Here's the tweet:

Del Toro showed up in a recent trailer for Kojima's next game, Death Stranding. The very weird trailer aired during The Game Awards this month, and it featured none other than del Toro himself alongside Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen.

This isn't the first time del Toro has publicly criticized Konami. Earlier this month, he had the same message: "F**k Konami."

For its part, Konami has said it remains "committed to new Silent Hill titles," though none have been announced. It added that the Silent Hills game was not actually very far in development, claiming it was only in the "embryonic" stage.

Silent Hills wasn't the first video game project involving del Toro that fell apart. The director was working on a horror game called Insane with publisher THQ, but it never materialized, in part due to the company's bankruptcy. After being burned twice, del Toro has said he doesn't intend to try to make a game of his own again.

"I have proven to be the albatross of video games," he said last year. "I joined THQ, and THQ goes broke. I join Kojima, and Kojima leaves Konami. I have decided, in order not to destroy anyone else's life, I will never again get involved in video games. Otherwise, I'll join someone and his house will explode, or something."

Del Toro's newest project, the animated Netflix show Trollhunters, is out now.

Konami Executives: Our best franchises' creator is doing something we don't like so let's fire him and let him go to Sony where he'll have a great new game and make money that could've been ours.

Great Idea!!!! You suck.

I'm surprised by all the complaints in the comments. This really just came off as a cheeky jab at Konami to me, not some bitter desperate lash out from del Toro. Last I checked, Konami's reputation is in ruins and del Toro is doing just fine for himself working with Kojima on what looks to be an ambitious game. He doesn't need validation.

kojima was terminated for about half a year now so what exactly came out after kojima left nothing silent hill didn't need kojimas help it needed team silent back to make a proper game instead of a crappy tech demo about a creppy pre school hallway if he wants to continue that game then let him I didn't think konami would be against him as long as it doesn't have the silent hill name

What's that all fuss about!? Is Del Toro out of stock of creative writing skill?! Because looks like he is, according his latest poor movies... So why not just make a game like Silent Hills and call it other than Silent Hills. Names doesn't matter if it's the only pain in their a s s e s.

On the other hand Kojima spent alot money ($80 Million, keep in mind Witcher 3 also cost same amount of money) and resources for making MGS5. He spent $80 Million for shallow game world, poor amount of game assets, repeitive as hell missions, ripped off contents according to his previous brilliant MGS games and then, he couldn't finish it properly...

I love Kojima works and his perfection but I believe he beated by his own pride. Everyone knows that Konami financially is not its shiny days like 90's so Kojima as a game designer, failed to adapting his company's poor conditions. In the end, Konami was faulty but Kojima was faulty as much as Konami. He just crying like a baby boy but still didn't make a single statement about what the heck was happen back in MGS5 development that f*cked up everything. He owe us a good goddamn explanation instead crying all the time.

@mgs4gop: $80M is nothing these days. Games like GTA5 cost over $200M.

CD Project Red making Witcher 3 for $80M was a big deal because they made game that could compete with AAA titles from all the top publishers on a fraction of the budget.

Avatar image for Hoodieninja86
Hoodieninja86

@mgs4gop: You act like Witcher 3 wasn't repetitive at all.

Oh also it's quite amazing because Kojima developed a Brand New Engine where Witcher 3 Just improved upon what they had. Hence part of the 80 million dollars probably also went to develop the engine. Death Stranding is not going to have a brand new engine, hence less time in development.

Sorry but Del Toro is still an amazing director/writer.

Avatar image for mgs4gop
mgs4gop

@Hoodieninja86: Yes, Witcher 3 was not repetitive at all compared to MGS5.

Even if they developed an engine from scratch it's still doesn't explain were the all that money goes to. It's still much money for a two empty game map. Kojima should play a lot GTA, Red Dead Redemption and of course Witcher 3 to learn what does open world means. Actually as a MGS fan, I wouldn't ask for open world like this if I know it's gonna be like this.

In case of Del Toro, If he hate Konami that so much and still making amazing works so why do he bother with Silent Hills name. Isn't that good opportunity to get revenge from Konami by doing almost same project but other than 'Silent Hills' title?

Anyway, I think it's just ridiculous to see a world class director/writer making childish statements like this all the time. Even if Konami did a bad decision here, it doesn't fair to hunting them like a witch. He better keep going because Konami did tons of amazing games than his entire movie career. Witch hunters should ask Google "list of Konami games" and be ashamed with their bad words and actions.

@mgs4gop: I wasn't a big Witcher fan until I started playing TW3. I've only played about 6 hours or so and even if I agree that the mission structure is quite repetitive, it is simply far more imaginative and intriguing than MGS V....and I used to be a HUGE MGS fan.

Kojima/Konami, whoever wants to take the blame, put out a half finished, confused game. The online was poorly implemented, the maps were boring and looked exactly the same with maybe 2 different location types in each continent/country and the mission structure...oh jeez. Some of the story missions were fun and inventive but almost all the side ops were EXACTLY THE SAME. I couldn't believe this was a Kojima product, so I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it was all Konami's fault.

Or maybe you're right and the Metal Gear series does not lend itself to a full open world game. They should have kept the semi-open structure of MGS 4. Let's hope Death Stranding redeems Kojima.

@soul_starter:

I highly disagree, Yes it's empty, aside from enemies and a few prisoners. But I'm okay with that. What I'm talking about is Witcher 3 has poor gameplay. It has good scenery yes, but the gameplay is by far one of the most simple and boring gameplay which is why it fails in comparison to MGS5's gameplay.

That being said you do realize that Kojima was prevented from seeing his staff near the end of production, MGS5 was essentially an unfinished project.

Avatar image for soul_starter

@Hoodieninja86: TW3s combat is a bit flimsy but once you get used to it, it is far more varied than MGS V Rinse and Repeat.

Avatar image for Hoodieninja86
Hoodieninja86

@soul_starter: Sorry but that is COMPLETELY false I play on the highest difficulty. It's stupid easy. AI is dumb and all you have to do is Dodge and or Roll and use quen with Fast Strikes. It's boring. By far one of the most overrated Battle Systems in an RPG game, other witcher abilities are pure useless and the game is too easy.

Avatar image for Redsyrup

@Hoodieninja86: Not seeing his staff and having his lieutenants do all his dirty work is Kojima's M.O. (modus operandi). Not only that but he's severely mistrusting of collaborators and unappreciative to the true shadow talent that make his games possible.

The last good English translation of an MGS game was MGS1 on PSX compliments of Jeremy Blaustein and Kojima rewarded him with a pink slip. The best game released in the franchise, that had the best writing, voice acting, the one that put Kojima on the map was due to Blaustein (for western audiences) and Kojima terminated him. Look it up.

Avatar image for Hoodieninja86
Hoodieninja86

@Redsyrup: That is completely false. And no David Hayter is just butthurt.

Avatar image for soul_starter

@Redsyrup: I have zero problems with the english translation of all the other MGS games and MGS4 is the best in the series. Possibly MGS3. I've never heard of the original being touted as the best.

Avatar image for Redsyrup
Redsyrup

@soul_starter: I agree MGS4 was excellent on many levels but replay MGS1 you'll notice that game is perfect. Even by today's standards which make its release in '98 way ahead of its time.

The dialog, translation and voice acting are above anything then or today. Backed by brilliant visuals and gameplay from KCEJ.

My ordered list would be:

1. MGS1

2. MGS4

3. MGS2

4. Peace Walker

5. MGS3

6. MGS GBC

7. MGS5 + Zeroes

8. MGS Portable Ops

9. MGS Acids

Obviously played in release order for story sake and to hit those highs offered by MGS4.

Avatar image for soul_starter

@Redsyrup: I've played MGS1 probably 15 or so times. I know how great it is but your claim the other translations were bad is false.

@Hoodieninja86: tell me. Was is neccesary to make a brand new engine? Why not just using Unreal Engine?

Avatar image for hecatonchires

@dorog1995: It was worth it. MGS V gameplay mechanics are really good and it nailed emergent gameplay.

Avatar image for mgs4gop
mgs4gop

@hecatonchires: Game engine has almost nothing to do with gameplay, it's up to gameplay programmers skill. People keeps praise the MGS5 for good optimisation and actually it was, because there is nothing complex/intensive scenery in the game.

Avatar image for Hoodieninja86
Hoodieninja86

@mgs4gop: Game Engine has nothing to do with Gameplay yes, but you do realize that's why MGS5 took a lot of time and money which was the point.

MGS5 was an UNFINISHED product, Kojima was unable to finish the game like he wanted and was prevented from seeing his staff near the end of production when Konami cut the line. For an unfinished product MGS5 was amazing.

"In case of Del Toro, If he hate Konami that so much and still making amazing works so why do he bother with Silent Hills name."

Because they can't utilize the same artwork and or Likeness of the game. Since Konami owns it.

Avatar image for deactivated-5c56012aaa167

@hecatonchires: Are you really sure that they couldn't make the same thing in Unreal? sorry about asking you too much but what pros Fox had over Unreal?

Avatar image for Hoodieninja86
Hoodieninja86

@dorog1995: there are a few reasons.

" FOX engine renders light and geometry separately, which makes it way easier to optimize by being able to break up the different ways light works into discrete tasks, instead of trying to render everything together. This technique is used so that the engine can run on consoles, as well as PC, but still deliver photorealism by utilizing geometry that's derived from 3D-scanned textures that are exposed to preserve light information the way the human eye sees light, rather than a camera lens.

So while the models and geometry might not be the best out there in all actuality, they look better because light is behaving in a way that your brain recognizes as being more realistic."

Avatar image for el_swanno
el_swanno

@Hoodieninja86: There's more to it than that. The Fox engine allowed for very quick and easy creation of in-game assets which in turn shortens the development cycle for games. From a demo I saw of how it works it looks like the programmers can take photos of real work assets and the engine converts them into in-game assets. They then apply physical properties to it eg. weight. It has been a couple of year since I saw the presentation but I believe they recreated the meeting room at Konami in about 2 hours.

Avatar image for slickwilly06

@dorog1995: Well from a PC standpoint, Fox runs extremely well for how good it looks. The majority of Unreal 4 games run VERY poorly in comparison.

@slickwilly06: The game is a dream to run on the PS4 too, up there with UC 4.
