Guild Wars 2 developer ArenaNet has announced Heart of Thorns, the first expansion pack for the MMO.

The expansion will let players explore the Heart of Maguuma, a brand new jungle area. The Heart of Maguuma is made up of three distinct biomes, and ArenaNet says it's one of the largest areas it ever built.

Guild Wars 2 game director Colin Johanson announced the news at the company's "Guild Wars 2: Beyond the Point of No Return" panel at PAX South.

The expansion will add the Mastery system, an endgame, account-based PvP progression system. Players will earn mastery points as they explore the map, complete missions, and other activities, which they'll be able to spend them on abilities available across characters for your PVP account. For example, players will be able to buy the hand gliding ability, and improve it to reach hard to reach locations.

Johanson also introduces Specializations, which will give existing classes access to new skills and weapons, the new Revenant profession, a new World vs. World Borderland map, and the competitive PvP Stronghold mode, where players fight for control of supplies, recruit troops, and attack the enemy stronghold.

Players in the audience were especially excited to hear about the addition of Guild Halls, a space for your guild to meet, progress your Guild Hall, and organize for guild missions.

This game has so many cool races that aren't being used for players.

This is much better than the living world garbage. Real new content. I just hope that the new areas introduce more quests to complete and there is a higher level cap.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Living world season 2 was amazing idk what your talking about, quests? Gw2 never had quests idk what ur talking about. And its confirmed HoT will not raise the level cap and no new tier of gears, their philosophy on this is it adds grind and obsoletes the older content of gw2.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I should also note that I haven't touched the game since the end of season 1. Season 1's living world was enough to turn me away from even reading news about GW2 until a real expansion comes out. Hence why I am here.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> well you missed out. while world completion hasn't been a focus of the new maps, they have their own way to incentivize exploration and, i'd wager, they're some of the best maps for exploring in the game.

plus, the map-wide meta events work better than in any previous map in game. you should hop in and check them out. i mean, you won't have access to the story instances that were released (at the time) for free with the maps, but the maps themselves and the things to do in them are there.

I will say guild wars 2 devs listen to feedback and iterated very heavily based on what the community said.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> In every zone, there were quests scattered throughout, and you could see them on your map as golden hearts. The best time I had with this game was 100%ing the world and exploring every inch of every zone (in addition to finding and completing jump puzzles without using guides, and fighting world bosses). Once I got 100% I sort of got bored and stopped playing. I want more reasons to explore every single place in a zone. Most of the tiny little zones they gave us were boring as balls because there was nothing to do in them but complete the instanced event.

"Masteries system, an endgame, account-based PvP progression system."

Wrong, masteries is a PVE progression system. in PVP, everything is completely unlocked.

I never liked that you could only change your appearence in pvp but not improve in health, damage etc. Yes, it makes the fights more fair but there's nothing really to achieve.

<< LINK REMOVED >> not everything needs to be a grind. pvp tends to be more about competition rather than artificial progression (you can still get better at pvp by doing the pvp).

btw, every post about league of legends has players complaining in the comments about why it's so unfair that you have to unlock things and completely pay to win.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> that doesn't stop people from saying that it is. i was just pointing out that players complain about both pvp progression and a lack thereof, and that "pvp progression" isn't something that competitive games and players typically appreciate.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Lateral pvp progression is fine, which is kind of what League is. You don't have an edge over other people if you have more unlocked. Just equally good options (or cosmetic differences). Vertical progression has always been something I hated in multiplayer games. When you know you are going to lose because the other guy is 15 levels ahead of you. That sucks.
