ArenaNet's PC MMO Guild Wars 2 has now reached more than 7 million global player accounts, the developer announced. The new milestone comes less than three months after ArenaNet switched the game's business model from paid to free. Thousands of new accounts are created every day, it claimed.

ArenaNet also announced that Guild Wars 2 players have a combined 1.4 billion-plus total gameplay hours since the game launched. In addition, ArenaNet called out the game's "friendly" environment by noting that, during the weekend that Guild Wars 2 switched business models, around 40 percent of max level characters traveled to starting zones to welcome new players.

The game's first expansion, Heart of Thorns, launched today (October 23). The paid expansion introduces a new zone called Maguuma Jungle, where players will fight an elder dragon voiced by Uncharted and Destiny actor Nolan North. The add-on also brings a new endgame character progression system called Masteries and adds Guild Hall social spaces.

In addition, ArenaNet says it will launch Guild Wars 2's first-ever raids in the near future.

Guild Wars 2 was released in summer 2012 and sold more than 5 million copies before its free-to-play conversion. For more on Hearts of Thorns, check out GameSpot's hands-on preview.

I personally want to get back into gw2 but got burnt out. As for other MMo's this beats almost all of them. FF 14 is doing pretty good. If I had time and money I would go to that game. but till then. I'm sticking to single player games like the witcher 3 and moddable games.

I don't like WoW but I feel like I have to point out that WoW has had over 7m active subscriptions for years(I dont know if it's currently over 7m). Out of those 7m accounts how many are still actively playing though.

@petek480: Probably a pretty small percentage because the game used to be buy to play. Everyone who bought the game and logged in once has an active account.

I liked the game, but back then there was almost nothing to do after you hit the level cap if you're not into PvP, so I stopped playing. Has that changed?

@ggregd:

Let me put it this way I was not impressed by their post launch-experimental-ditched -filler content, before they announced the expansion. Right now all of that stuff they learned to do for the “end game content,” got mashed up into this expansion in some way. However for new players it will be a steal, since your $50 goes to getting both the core content (which is limited if your just F2P) and HoT expansion. If your a veteran you have to fork over $50 for each expansion every single time from now on. Which not be so bad if the content they released matched (or even surpassed) the quality of core content in vanilla GW2.

Right now this expansion basically seems to pander to that hardcore crowd. Especially with the way they are backpedaling on some of their ideas. For instance if you were around since the beginning you know they had a dungeon path system. Which they said could easily be expanded upon. However they quickly dismantled that idea and actually laid off their head dungeon designer. Yet they hired five more people in his place.

It eventually led them to bring in “Fractals.” Yet again promising they would easy to expand on. Since they were mini-dungeons that according to them would be effortless to drop in (compared to dungeon paths). They expanded it once after their initial release, and the proceeded to delete the progress people made within fractals. Due to a “lead-board system” that supposedly was not up to par at the last minute. Now they have a “new Raid system” for HoT. Which mind is not even completed version of it. Furthermore they recommend you use their extra 5% plus ascended stat gear (over exotic) tier crafting for these raids. All the while they just recently (as of today) nerfed dungeon and fractal gold rewards (by 2/3 of what they were) 3 years latter, because now it's supposedly inflating the GW2 economy.

All of that that is not even the tip of ice berg for the reasons why I am waiting for some real reviews of HoT.

Finally on a sub-note they are trying to bring back the healer class. via the Ranger sub-class called the Druid. Which is probably not going to stop the zerker (max damage over everything else) PvE meta that had taken over the game since launch.

Played it for couple of hours. For $50 its nowhere near enough content. Still better than Living Story trash we've gotten for years.

@silversix_: You played it for a couple of hours, but there's nowhere near enough content? There is absolutely no way you completed all the content in 'a few hours'.
