Guerrilla cordoning off new Killzone - Report

Sony-owned studio said to be working on a follow-up for its PlayStation-exclusive sci-fi shooter franchise.

Insomniac Games may be dropping Resistance after its third installment in that PlayStation 3-exclusive shooter franchise, but it appears as if Guerrilla Games will remain locked in to Killzone. Gamerzines reports today that the latest issue of Edge Magazine confirms Guerrilla Games has begun work on "a Killzone follow-up."

Guerrilla's Killzone is basically universe-wide.
Guerrilla's Killzone is basically universe-wide.

The latest issue of Edge has yet to hit newsstands--though it is reportedly available to subscribers--and the magazine's online arm has confirmed an impending Guerrilla Games feature. According to Gamerzines, that feature reveals that most of the studio's staff has begun work on a new installment in the sci-fi shooter franchise.

Killzone 2 and 3 senior producer Steven Ter Heide will reportedly serve as game director on the new title. Gamerzines' recap of Edge's story offered no other details on the new project, such as platforms or release date.

Guerrilla's latest installment in the franchise, Killzone 3, launched to a warm critical reception in February. A direct sequel to 2009's Killzone 2, the game saw a squad of Interplanetary Strategic Alliance troops aiming to survive an invasion of the Nazi-esque Helghan homeworld. The game added full 3D support to the franchise, as well as PlayStation Move integration.

The only things I really want for them to change is the overall feel of multiplayer and make the campaign more about Sev and Rico's story, not some random Helghast politician.

@SicklySunStorm Yeah man, it used to be a rare occasion that I was spoilt for choice with games. I'd actually put Uncharted 3 on the back-burner too what with Skyrim coming out. Thankfully though my sister said she'd get me that for Christmas so it's all good! Next year looks to be killer already. Starhawk, GTAV, Max Payne 3. Seriously looking forward to it. I'll pick up Killzone in the January sales i'd imagine :)

@warhawk-geeby - I was the same. I LOVED KZ2, thought it was my personal favourite single player FPS ever..... KZ3 though... it came out while my wife was still heavily pregnant and then of course the baby was born... I got to play it about a month back, and it was stunning even if it was nearly a year old... even better, it's really cheap to buy now too.

I love Killzone, well, I only played a bit of the first one, bought the second one and played e heck out of it, am yet to buy Kz3. I just have too many games on my queue, and although I do love the MP, I those games for the single player. Having said that, I wouldn't mind Guerrilla tapping another project; maybe revamp an old Sony IP, or simply come up with something new. And give us the next Kz game on a new engine, maybe on the next gen, if it turns out as soon as 2013.

I played killzone 2 and loved the campaign and Mp but with killzone 3 not that much. I really hope guerrilla games improve the story and characters of what appears to be Killzone 4.

I loved Killzone 2, but with all the decent games out this year I never did pick up Killzone 3 - I'll probably get it along with Infamous 2 when the releases have died down a bit. I'd imagine the next one will be for the PS4 though, it'd make sense if that was on the cards. An article last week said one of Sony's studios had starting working on a game for the new console, and this would fill the gap perfectly. I may not want the new console yet, but that doesn't mean I don't look forward to the games :)

how about a killzone thats explains the story of the helgasts and how they started from the view point of a helgan soldier in more detail rather than the view point of the ISA soldiers.

@YoungSinatra25 I agree. It would be cool if there was a civil war, and you as a Helghast, had to take back the planet. The story of rebuilding the Helghast homeworld. BTW, The Helghast are a rip-off of Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, same mask: << LINK REMOVED >>

@YoungSinatra25 i like the ISA, the only reason i like the Helghast is to kill them, they are so evil and are basically space nazi's. C'mon theres Templar and Lugar with their sexual tension and Rico how his entire squad was killed by the Helghast (I understand if you dont like Rico lol). But i am referring to Killzone 1, im a fan of KZ1, then KZ2 killed off Templar, that was it for me, i never got KZ3 cos Templar died, and there wasnt enough content for the fans of KZ1, no mention of Hakha or Lugar

I just want a good story for Killzone 4. The Killzone universe actually has a rich backstory but the games always seem to poorly present a simple good v bad story.

@RyanParksSuper. Dude KZ3 sucked. The completely noob friendly MP was a complete downgrade from KZ2. Every review out there has said the same thing. The campaign was a step forward but the MP was a huge step backward. The redesign for everything in MP was terrible. If they don't revolutionize the MP experience like they did with KZ2 in KZ4 I most likely will not be buying it. I love Killzone but I was very disappointed with KZ3.

KZ3 was not rushed. It's the perfect FPS. Just cause all you People suck at the MP doesn't give u all the right to bash it. I have a 4.0 KDR and rising everyday. KZ2 Vets KZ2 sucked that's why the GG totally overhauled Everything to make KZ3 Perfect.

First off I hope its a PS4 launch release. Second GG if your out there no one cares about the ISA. NO ONE!!! Let us play as the the real heart and soul of the series the Helghast. (I mean they are the ones you always put on the cover...right) Let us play as a Helghan soldier. I've never cared for anyone of the characters I actually played in this series except the first which was Hakha. So for KZ4 please please let me be a Helghast warrior...

I found the two latest installments of the Killzone franchise to be fairly solid in terms of gameplay; the controls feel comfortable, the weapons feel lethal, the maps are well constructed, and the visuals are well above average. Unlike the weapons you carry however, the Killzone series suffers from a definitive lack of weight; once you've had the opportunity to play through the brief campaign, there are very few moments which truly manage to linger after you've set your controller down (The jungle sequence quoted previously being one of them). I suppose the obvious point I'm trying to make is that the series hardly lacks for interesting characters, settings, or a political backdrop upon which an incredible narrative could be crafted. It's frustrating however, seeing the series persistently fail to capitalize on such potential, only to continually push the player down yet another series of corridors where they blast the living daylights out of the seemingly inexhaustible supply of the same enemies. It's time for Guerrilla Games to take the opportunity to rethink what they've been doing; this series could be truly incredible if greater attention was paid to simple plot development. I suppose offline co-op wouldn't go amiss, either.

Take all the time in the world to finish this, Guerrilla Games. Killzone 3 was too rushed to meet a deadline, and it suffered. With that said, I can't wait for some new Killzone!

Personally, I liked 3 a lot more than 2. To me, the story feels more fleshed out, the environments more varied and I love the offline co-op (with the wife). But I too would love to see such a talented studio try something new as well.

Okay a new killzone, now killzone is pretty strong but please guerilla games no more 2 steps back. I feel that kz3 was rushed but that may have been due to sony pushing for a date but really this time higher someone a professional to write this story! The story is already fun but please it needs to make since. I feel kz3 was pretty strong in multiplayer but it felt more like cod and less like killzone. Kz2 was great on multiplayer and they could learn something from their last game. And please give me a beautiful co-op mode! The co-op mode was so half hearted and was a complete let down.

I really wish they would try for a new IP. Killzone is a high quality game...but it's getting stale especially with the proliferation of FPS's today. Guerrilla could put their talent to much better use.

Not as anxious as I would like to be. Killzone 3 let me down. Killzone 2 >>> Killzone 3. Killzone 2 had more care and value invested in it to guarantee its success. After finishing killzone 3 three times, I gave it away. Killzone 2 I will keep forever. Killzone 3 'on foot set pieces' were too short, too easy, too few and not as well planned as in killzone 2. Just the jungle senario is worth remembering. Need not to mention the story and I am only referring to the campaign.

If they want this to work, they gotta tighten up the story and get new characters and possibly a new setting, unless they somehow drastically change things up again, the story is getting kinda old, and if they want to make good mp, stick to a more KZ2 style instead of KZ3, I liked KZ2 better.
