And not just any character, one of the "greatest MCU characters of all time."

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will introduce one of the "greatest MCU characters of all time," writer and director James Gunn said on Twitter.

Gunn made this comment in response to someone who asked if the upcoming holiday special would add a new character. Gunn not only confirmed that it would, but that this character would be part of the MCU, and that he has high hopes. "In my incredibly subjective and admittedly often odd opinion, we'll be introducing one of the greatest MCU characters of all time," Gunn said.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is scheduled to debut in Holiday 2022, so it will still be some time before we find out who the character is and why they're so exciting. As the fan pointed out, Boba Fett was introduced in the Star Wars Holiday Special in 1978 before the character appeared in Empire Strikes Back.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is one of a handful of projects that Gunn is involved with right now. He's also working on the Suicide Squad spinoff TV show Peacemaker starring John Cena for January 2022 on HBO Max, and he's also attached to direct 2023's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

According to ScreenRant, the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will lead directly into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, so it appears the special might have some weight to it instead of being simply a one-off. Another thing that bears mentioning here is that Gunn is known for his humor and wit, so this "greatest" character that will be revealed in the holiday special might not turn out to be what you expect.
