Microsoft hasn't been dallying about bringing some of the top games from the current console generation to its Games on Demand service through Xbox Live. Currently, Xbox 360 gamers can purchase digital copies of such top-rated titles as Assassin's Creed, BioShock, Mass Effect, Burnout Paradise, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. That list is poised to grow in October, as Microsoft has announced eight more full retail games that will be offered through its download service.

No Caption Provided

This past Tuesday, Call of Duty 3 and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 joined the Games on Demand lineup, both carrying a $29.99 price tag. Next Tuesday, Rockstar Games' top-rated (not to mention top-selling) action adventure Grand Theft Auto IV arrives. Rockstar will return on October 20 with its street racer Midnight Club Los Angeles, as Electronic Arts offers up Army of Two and Sega delivers Sonic Unleashed.

Electronic Arts will close the month on October 27 with Dead Space, its well-received survival horror shooter developed by Visceral Games. Dead Space will find company that week in Codemasters' Dirt, an off-road racer formerly titled Colin McRae Rally.

Microsoft did not indicate how much the upcoming new additions will cost and had not responded to requests for comment as of press time. However, the current Games on Demand roster ranges in price from $19.99 to $29.99.

I'm hoping this isn't the future of gaming because the way Microsoft makes you buy crap over if you have to get a new system is scary. There's going to be a lot of mad pp if they don't make a VERY reliable system next time.

I'm sorry, but games are way cheaper to buy even at retail stores, and includes a box, boxart, booklet....This digital distribution could've had so much potential, but as it is, it will never pickup anymore than half the sales at retail. In brief, buying full online consoles games has been so far a rip-off.

...and they can count on me not buying anymore games. This is actually probably a good thing. It's just the motivation I need to quit playing games so much.

digital downloads are the future. Hard media will be phased out the next generation of consoles. Count on it.

Thirdrail1 is right. Why would I want to buy a game that I can't trade in or sell when I'm done with it? I see no advantage to Games on Demand, over buying a physical copy of a game.

Ok, I bought a bunch of MS points and downloaded DLC for a bunch of my games. Then I was stricken with the RROD. When I got my system back, there was a letter telling me that since they sent a different system, when I put in my hard drive, the DLC would have to be downloaded again to recognize the system or some BS along those lines. The problem is: I no longer have internet connection. Now, when I try to play the DLC I paid for, I get an error message saying the data is corrupt and can't be played. That alone p***** me off, but I couldn't imagine if this happened to a full game I have purchased, or multiple full games (God forbid my entire library). THAT ladies and gentlemen, is why I hate digital downloads, and is why I will never jump on board. If I don't have a physical disk or cartridge in my hands, I simply will not buy a game.

@Kyuubi_Vegetto - You missed the case where my X360 dies and I buy a new one off ebay 5-10 years down the road. DL games are gone... the service it turned off and what do you have now? The ability to pay for them again? or you create a physical library and no one can take away the games... Some people like to throw away their games or just buy more instead of replaying the good ones over and over. Others don't... the DL model doesn't provide any value to these individuals. As for the prices, the reason we think the prices should be lower is because the DL model provides less at the same price. No sharing with friends, reading the manuals, no box-art, no replaying console generations later... If given the choice at the same price, who would actually want a DL game? and why? Because they are too lazy to go to the store? or because they are just can't find the game anymore?

Games on demand is a way to get older games out there to ones who haven't tried them yet, It introduced me to Mass Effect, which I am extremely greatful for... And its one of the only places to buy a game at 3 in the morning...

neat idea, im still down for just renting games. I can basically rent about 6 or seven popular games for the price of a single retail game. Besides most games out there that are popular and that i want to play can usually be completed in a week. I only get a game if i play it for the online play, or if i see it being as a must have to own and that i'll always keep playing it or that it has a great replay value and that i can play it over and over.

@DesertEaglez Three reasons One is the fact is that the industry is still treading the water with this and it's still somewhat far off from becoming standard. Two how are gamer's who either have no credit cards or no internet access going to get access to the games? Three is hard drive space if Sony were to do this with the PS3 they'd have to come out with model packing a 1 Terabyte hard drive since most PS3 games take up the whole or half the blu-ray disc and the uncompressed digital variants would wreak havoc on smaller hard drives.

Awesome. Now I can buy games like Fable 2 or Call of Duty 3, beat them once, and not be able to return them or trade them in towards others. Nor can I buy used copies. I'm psyched for this.

This is a great first step towards download-only services. Unfortunately, I can buy almost every game available on Games on Demand for cheaper used at GameStop. If they want to make a dent on retail sales, they need to either price games more competitively or let us trade in our digital copies when we're done. Or both.

@Kyuubi_Vegetto: hey moron, go to Gamestops own web site and look at the price of COD 3. That's not a sale my friend it's everyday. Then go to Amazon.com, new and used FROM $7. So why would you pay $30 when you can go to 100 different places and get the games a lot cheaper. And what don't you get? Dude, when you cut down all the production cost, the cost of packaging, instructions, etc. You cut all that cost out, the price of the game SHOULD be less than retail where you pay to get that extra stuff. Damn.

The thing I don't understand is that here in Europe all the games cost about 50$ to download. And most of the games go for 30$ retail. I don't even bother checking what kind of games there are on Games on Demand because I know it would be cheaper just to buy them retail. And considering the fact that they're cutting down costs from producing the physical copies, it makes no sense at all. Are people really that lazy that they would rather put in an extra 20$ just so they don't have to go to the store and get them retail?

@xHOJUx I don't know why people continue to suggest microsoft overpriced the games on the GOD service most of these prices are the exact same in most major retail chains people didn't acknowledge this when the service launched then and still refuse to acknowledge it now, it's annoying as hell. @SkidRow18 So apparently having a digital copy is more of a risk than having a physical copy of a game nevermind the fact that the physical copy can be damaged or lost in most cases, while digital copies can't. @ angelGP32 I'll try to explain this as best I can the reason you can walk into a store like Gamestop and get a game for around $10 is because Gamestop is either running a sale or giving you a deal which allows you to get the game for much less than what it's supposed to sale for not rocket science my friend. @dkslade With digital copies of games you get mostly unbridled access to the games you downloaded which means if you delete the game you can just redownload it for free you can't do that if you decide to sell the physical copy of a game can you? xZeppelin18x Unless you for whatever reason do something to get your account modded or deleted you have nothing to worry about and no you risk more buying the physical copy of a game than the digital copy. @I_am_In_Flames I don't really see the point in shipping the physical copy of game since you wouldn't really need the physical copy of the game especially if all most of you guys are just going to do is send it to Gamestop or what not.

They should offer to ship a physical copy of the game too. Convenience + physical copy of game. Seems like a great idea to me, actually, I'm positive a lot of people would appreciate that. Or they should lower prices a bit.

SkidRow is right, you can't rub gigabites against your face. Only sheer, sensitive plastic surfaces. I, for one, am actually tempted to try full Deadspace if it's $19. If $29, well, I can wait longer. Demo didn't do much for me but I appreciate price drops. And the devs still see money for this, guys. Second publishing cycles give MORE money to the author / artist / developers; it's the first cycle (hardcover / original / shelf release) that puts more money in the publisher's pocket. So, here's to hoping for more games that we probably didn't already pay full price for! Silver medal's still a medal.

When i hooked it up at his house I could not play any of the arcade games when i got back home and hooked my Xbox back up and brought it online they where all back. Does anyone know if the full games work the same way. If so its the worst deal ever.

Maybe it's just because I'm too paranoid. But I don't like the idea of paying any money for something I'm not going to hold in my hand. That's why I'm not a fan of OnLive or any similar service. Besides, I agree with angelGP32; You can find these games much cheaper. (I perfer Amazon, but that's just me, I like to take the human element out of it.
