GTA 5 Updates Now Focused on Leveraging Xbox One, PS4, and PC's Power

Rockstar says its key GTA 5 staff are all at work on GTA Online updates.

Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar North's full focus is on GTA V's multiplayer mode, GTA Online. There's currently no time table for when the mode's ongoing updates will cease, though Xbox 360 and PS3 may have seen the last of their major new features.

Rockstar today revealed the next update for GTA Online: The Freemode Events update adds new things for players to do without leaving the standard open-world. It also introduces the Rockstar Editor to Xbox One and PS4, a feature which, like the new freemode events themselves, will only be for PC, Xbox One, and PS4. Rockstar had warned players that last-gen systems might eventually be unable to continue receiving updates, and it seems we've now reached that point.

"The primary technical reason is the memory capacity for the older systems," design director Imran Sarwar told IGN. "We are constantly adding new items to the game with each update and we began approaching the memory limits after the first year of GTA Online content."

The big online heists update nearly maxed out what was possible, but Sarwar says "some creative programming" allowed for more, up through the second Ill Gotten Gains update. However, Rockstar is now at the point where it "can't make any more meaningful updates without putting the stability of the entire online game at risk."

Now that the newer consoles and PC are the baseline, Rockstar can set its sights higher. "[W]e are now focused on the opportunities provided by the more powerful PS4, Xbox One, and PC--and we've got some really fun ideas on how to make the most of these more powerful machines," Sarwar said.

"Aside from simply allowing us to utilize more memory and pack additional assets into the game itself, the additional power will mean we can create more complex game types and deliver on some of the ideas we have that only these newer systems can allow. We are really excited for how GTA Online can continue to evolve as a platform with these new systems."

And they will continue to evolve for the foreseeable future, as Sarwar says Rockstar will keep delivering new content "as long as people continue to play and enjoy GTA Online." Rockstar says the game sees an average of 8 million players every week, and the company has invested its resources accordingly.

According to Sarwar, Rockstar North "currently [has] all key members of the team that launched Grand Theft Auto V focused on supporting GTA Online in every capacity." This could explain why we've still yet to hear about the expected story DLC.

GTA V's new update launches on September 15.

Not impressed! I only have PS3 and I enjoy playing GTA V. Very disappointed.

So pretty much there won't be a another update for Xbox 360?

Avatar image for aquamah

should i stop playing MGSV and get back to this?

Avatar image for beepbep

@aquamah: Hell no

Avatar image for charlieholmes

The more people keep playing an old game that gets minor tweaks to its online only portion, you'll never get new experiences from new games. They'll be too busy milking you on the old game to make anything new!

And where the hell is the new SP content talked about long ago anyways!

Avatar image for Viral-venom13

R*, can we seriously stop with all of these updates for GTA and just move on to new game projects please? If you want to bring new announcements, kindly bring stuff related to new games coming from the company like the next Red Dead or Midnight Club game or something!

Avatar image for j0nathanruss11

@Viral-venom13: Watch it just be a Red Dead Remaster!

Call of Money: Swindle Ops

@Viral-venom13: It'd be insane if the RDR announcement doesn't happen this year.

I don't really care about the online extras. We have more than enough for that on last gen, I just want to make sure that we are still getting the story DLC promised for the single player?

I am not buying this game again at full price just to play story DLC, when I have owned it for nearly two years on last gen.

Avatar image for poseidion

@punksterdaddy: agree. It really dissapoints that I paid about $150 for the limited edition of PS3's day one, and still two years later they want me to pay $60 for almost the same game? No thank you. Rockstar stopped being my fav company the day they announced the re-release at $60.

Avatar image for poseidion

@framesperwha: kudos for you if you have money to waste. I don't. And Rockstar wasn't such a selfish company until GTA V.

*Yawn* Rockstar are always putting more focus on the multiplayer component with their games. Single player is still buggy and suffers from stuttering and what about some single player DLC?!

Avatar image for deusvex

@Twilighten: Buggy and stuttering? Are you playing on a underpowered PC?

Avatar image for Twilighten

@deusvex: Nope. Definitely not. Ever since update 1.27 and especially 1.28 the game stutters for people. That's three people now that have been unaware... Rockstar even acknowledged the issue at the time.

Avatar image for chewbacca72

would this be on the backwards compatability list or would I have to re-purchase GTA V when I get an X1?

Avatar image for deusvex

@chewbacca72: Re-Purchase I would imagine considering there already is a X1/PS4 version. Why would you want to buy an Xbox One just to keep playing the 360 version anyway? You can transfer you save files.

Avatar image for chewbacca72

@deusvex: I don't buy the same game twice unless it is broken.

Avatar image for JRHT

Rob will do a video, right?

Avatar image for ps3gamer1234

Still full price for a re-master, so I am still waiting to buy.

@lonesamurai1: Damn, you lost 2 seconds of your life and lost one of the trillion more clicks your gonna push in your life. It's not the end of the world.

Avatar image for Akabuu

@lonesamurai1: Yep. In fact, Rockstar doesn't even call it "GTA 5 Online", they just call it GTA Online. Truly disgusting behavior. Gamespot, get a hold of your scummy bait clicking writers, for each shitty article like this you allow, a mad person leaves to another website.

No one cares, make GTA VI already, V was shit.

Avatar image for dranwarren

@Slannmage: it was pretty good and the graphics were realistic but the sp mode was short very less story missions like saints row 4 even gta sa had many story missions than 5. They packed the game with most random events and the rest was online....

Avatar image for nomadsalt

@Slannmage: Lame troll attempt.

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@Slannmage: you for real? shit??? maybe you should step away from gaming if one of the best AAA games of the last console generation didn't impress you. wow.

Avatar image for Warlord_Irochi

@Xristophoros: Don't feed the troll.

Avatar image for Slannmage

@Xristophoros: Had a boring world, crap story, the online was shit and so was the music.

Avatar image for dranwarren

@Slannmage: crap stpry thats true and the music felt boring and the fact there was no user track player like gta sa really sucked...

Avatar image for pure_evil_80

Well the 360 and ps3 can only do so much I suppose.
At least the older gen versions got all the features promised, even if it did take a while, it was all free.

Only request is that they put a few more of those silly online vehicles into singleplayer. Because Trevor needs a monster truck.

I wonder if these optimisations will carry through into single player...

Avatar image for Sushiglutton

"average of 8 million players every week" <--------- that's pretty strong, wow!

Avatar image for gameroutlawzz

Please make it that replaying missions for gold medal isnt so much of a hassle. Right now you have to find a way to kill yourself or abandon by doing something wrong in the mission if you want to be able to restart instantly without going through the long a** load screen twice every single time and its been that way for 3 platform releases with no changes made. Even with a SSD in my ps4 its such a damn pain to go through those everytime.

Avatar image for mst3kfan78

Amen to that!

Avatar image for MrFreehuggs

Would any one like an Arkham Knight Steam key? Free of charge. First person to send me a PM gets it. I'm not 100% sure it will work. I had a fraudulent buyer, so far most of the codes I sent him have worked, but I already have this game.

Avatar image for MrFreehuggs

@MrFreehuggs: Its gone and sadly didnt work

Avatar image for immortality20

I just don't care about the online. Give me some single player dlc and I'll buy a xb1 version.

Avatar image for barcaazul

I've got it on PS4, but would love SP DLC.

Avatar image for Warlord_Irochi

@barcaazul: didn't they talked that some SP DLC was on the way?

Avatar image for barcaazul

Never officially I don't think. I think Leslie Benzies of Rockstar north mentioned it though during an interview.

Online is fun, but I'd rather have an expansion or to hear of something new from Rockstar. Maybe it's all a ploy and they will drop something new soon. Fingers crossed

Avatar image for deactivated-58a78a043e9d4

@immortality20: +1 I had high hopes for the Michael's detective mission, being a great fan of LA Noire, but it was just a long-winded fetch quest.
