GTA 5 PC Ships on 7 Discs - Report

By comparison, 2008's GTA IV shipped on just two DVDs.

The upcoming physical PC version of Rockstar's open-world game Grand Theft Auto V will ship across seven DVDs. That's according to the image above, which appeared earlier today on Reddit.

No Caption Provided

The origins of the image are not immediately clear, though the ratings logo suggests it stems from an international market, not the United States.

By comparison, 2008's GTA IV shipped across just two discs. Of course--at 65 GB--GTA V is a substantially larger game than GTA IV, which weighs in at 16 GB.

Another picture of the PC edition of GTA V appeared on Twitter today. Presumably taken inside of a warehouse or retailer, the image shows off stacks and stacks of the game.

GTA V launches for PC in under a week, hitting retailers worldwide on April 14. The digital version of the game is available now to pre-load from the Rockstar Warehouse and Steam.

For lots more on the PC edition of GTA V, check out GameSpot's new interview with Rockstar North and the video below where we discuss the game's new editor and director mode.

it would take forever to download that on steam with my internet connection and would use up half my bandwidth cap so I bought the physical copy. Discs aren't as convenient but they install faster and don't take up bandwidth so its not bad for me. Any game over 25gb I will usually buy physical unless steam has a killer sale.

@kawishali: There is an activation code on the back of the manual. You will be prompted to type it in once the install is finished.

@kawishali: Depends what you want, if you want the convenience of Steam go for Steam as the boxed version goes is just a single separate install. My download speed is 8 MB/s and it's the same as the speed of a DVD drive installing to my HDD give or take so installing from the 7 discs will take me just as long as downloading it. That said, I was able to get a better deal on a retail copy then on a digital copy so I went with the retail copy (also because of the nostalgia of having a ton of discs to install something).

@Damnation_6: Hey damnation, wanted to ask. My internet slow as shit, 200Kb's upload, 1.78 MB download. If i buy retail would I have to download much? or anything at all? As you can see 65 GB would take me a week or so at 24/7

@leimonides: About 8.5 gigs if they are dual layered.

Well not enough people have blueray drives on their PC's yet and I'm unsure there ever will be as internet speed is increasing.

And this is why I don't buy physical pc games anymore. The last one was Max Payne 3, which was on four discs. Sure, it's gonna take days to download 65GB, but at least I won't have to change discs every ten minutes during installation, or worry about cd keys. THAT is annoying.

In fact, I've rebought most of the pc games I have physical copies of on Steam, just so I don't need to have a disc in the drive.

@DrunkenPunk800: But you do know that even if you have a physical copy, you don't have to put them again in your drive to play it after it's done installing?

For PC games 2015 DVDs are basically to Blu-Ray what CDs were to DVD back in the early-mid 2000s at this point.

Its time to get with the new technologies, for Christ sake 7 discs!

A blu-ray drive is very cheap and if it means only needing 1 disc instead of 7 I'd gladly take that option.

As for the PC fants trying to defend this what reason do you have to defend it? The PC gamers clearly have all the best of stuff and some of the most expensive hardware inside their computer yet you're mulling over spending an extra £20 on an Optical drive? lol smh.

@Keitha313: Agree with you sir, I'm a PC person myself, and currently I don't have BluRay Drive just because it's not (yet) standard to PC platform, it just waste of money to invest on something that not used, heck even my DVD is rarely used (but its only 10-15$ compared to bluray drive for $100+).

So If one day BluRay is become standard, I will surely add that in my Rig, but for now I just stick to my DVD drive.

@Keitha313: I know. It's 2015. Time to leave DVD in the past. Same thing happened ten years ago, when pc games were still usually on CD's, but consoles had moved to DVD. Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay was on 5 cd's, and Painkiller was on three.

I thought pc games would've moved to Blu Ray by now, but I doubt that will happen since Steam is doing so well. Still, if games are 35-65GB now, just imagine what they'll be in five years. I can't imagine downloading 100+GB games with the ISP usage caps, and the comparatively slow broadband speeds to other countries..

I am of the opinion that if you can download you should. The only exceptions would be if you are a collector or you have slow download speeds. As mentioned the physical disc for PC is not really of much use in reselling these days. Everything is tied to an account. The main reason I don't use DVDs and Blue Rays is because they are a waste of space. The less I have in my room the better it is for me. The only thing I don't like is most movie retailers don't allow you to save a copy of a movie to your hdd or ssd on PC.

Pathetic console gamers always looking for something to complain about.

If R* released on Blu-Ray, I'm sure most would buy those discs instead. I mean, what does a Blu-Ray Drive cost?....$35~45?

Given the current situation, I'd take the DVD discs just for the cover art...but its not like digital download isn't an option.

@seanwil545: It's the other way around. A segment of the PC gaming community takes every opportunity to run that played out peasant/ master race joke further into the ground. But when the tables turn, like in this article's context of media and # of discs, it's horrible and uncalled for.

There's pros and cons to both gaming approaches and constantly insulting one doesn't make you any better, it just shows your true colors where your maturity and wisdom is more befitting the "social class" you're so supposedly above.

@immortaltech6@seanwil545:

Many gaming laptops still use DVD drives.

It is the most compatible format, so I understand why they are using it.
A lot games still come out for PS3 and 360...its called market penetration.

I should add that I've never once referred to PC gamers as Master Race and I own every recent console except XBO.

I just prefer PC...for all the things consoles are not.

@seanwil545@seanwil545: I've been a PC gamer since Doom and Quake and console since SNES, every generation. I prefer physical discs and convenience, don't care much about graphics. Different strokes for different folks.

But in the context of this article and the whole platform war all over this comment section, the console wins because 1 bluray disc > 7 DVDs. Your word selection of "pathetic console gamers" is what made me group you along with that PC minority, and that's the whole group/ argument that I was addressing even if you didn't mean it that way.

@immortaltech6@seanwil545: They're dual layer dvds so it would have to be two dual layer blu rays.

The vast majority of PC players won't be affected by this (especially among those that can actually run Rockstar's crappy ports). Most PC players haven't used a physical copy of a game in over a decade.

@immortaltech6@seanwil545: It's just dumb, I've only turned to the PC gaming scene recently and I was honestly shocked to seeing them using such outdated methods possibly because they want people to go towards all digital... Kind of a b**ch move If you ask me though.

However for most people with a terrible internet connection those 7 discs will be a much quicker means to get the game installed.

@Techn1c4l: Not everyone has a bluray drive on their PCs. I do, but I understand a huge number of users simply have no use for one. PC has been an all digital platform for awhile now. Hard copies of games are usually much harder to obtain unless it's a huge release like this.
