GTA 5 Looks Jaw Dropping With This PC Mod

Toddyhancer takes the presentation of Rockstar's open-world to the next level.

An industrious Grand Theft Auto V PC player has overhauled the game's visuals with a home-made software mod, and the results have left fans captivated.

Posting on Reddit, Martin 'Toddyftw' Bergman described the Toddyhancer mod as a "work in progress" that uses a whole range of tools to introduce new visual effects. The software includes ReShade, a generic post-processing injector, which is used to add "ambient occlusion, bokeh depth of field, and colour correction."

Meanwhile, the middleware ENB, which has previously been used for games including Skyrim, Oblivion, and Deus Ex, allows greater control over post-processing effects and high dynamic range lighting. Along with those, Bergman has made a few "simple tweaks and some tonemapping with class."

It's important to note that the mod is in the early stages of development and, much like with GTA 4's iCEnhancer, is likely to evolve and improve the realistic visual style over time.

Yeah, that's how games could look today if they were developed for pc first mentality and then downgraded to work on consoles. Just like good old days (late 1990's).

@snaketus: Haha yeah okay keep telling yourself that.

The truth is that mods like this requires some SERIOUS grunt to run at 60fps. On PC you might have access to super powerful components but the average PC gamer doesn't use them.

The most commonly used card that Steam gives actual stats for is the GTX 970. But the GTX 760 isn't far behind it. Neither is the GTX 660.

If you add up the number of people using each card, the number using something as high as a 900 series is actually a very small minority. I'd imagine even a GTX 980 would see frame drops on something like this. Unless you are pushing more than one card in SLI you are going to struggle to run it.

Which the average person isn't doing.

@Dannystaples14: actually in many cases these mods use very little extra power. Most are just tweaks to lighting, shading etc. They aren't like texture packs for example that can seriously impact performance on low end systems.

I used to use ENB files on Skyrim on a 660ti and they made the games look truly amazing with little to no impact on performance. The texture and mesh mods however did.

@lisandrocalejo: I wasn't talking about the article and mods. I was talking about my previous comment where I was comparing percentage usage of different graphics cards from Steam Hardware Stats.

It is clear according to the data from Steam that just as many people use middle of the range graphics cards such as the GTX 760 and GTX 660 than use the top end cards such as the 970 and 980.

My point was mods like this and mods in general tend to require quite a lot of power to run. Especially ones which upgrade textures. I suggested that using a GTX 970 or lower might give less than ideal performance when running a game that looks like those screen shots.

Which goes against the previous comments that if consoles didn't exist all games would look like this. Which I seriously doubt because the majority of people are using graphics cards that are less powerful than a 970. If a 970 struggles with this level of graphics then MOST people would struggle. Games are made for the average system.

If consoles didn't exist PC graphics might be better than they are now but they sure wouldn't be THAT much better. Most PC exclusive games don't even look as good as those screenshots.

970 dosnt struggle . most pc games that look as the screen shots they slry look like that . and if consoles didnt exist graphics would be what a quad titanx d12x render game look by now. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVym8jYzwSs )

and now that actualy amd and nvidia are starting to move fword with graphics cards ( they ware held back because of consoles) we are entering HBM era. where its easyer to render 4k .

tldr: move a long buddy you dont know what you are talking about

@lisandrocalejo: So in your opinion just because consoles didn't exist people would just suddenly be happy buying top end graphics cards like a Titan for $1000 a pop?

No wonder it was too long for you to read you are a f*cking retard if you think that.

If consoles didn't exist graphics cards would still be at the level they are now and people still wouldn't want to pay $1000s for them.

On Steam the average card people use is the GTX 970. Because they are now more affordable. The majority of people are still using older cards.

There is nothing stopping developers from making the graphics on PC as good as they physically can. They don't do it because they choose not to.

If you want to blame anyone blame the developers. It is them who make the games and CHOOSE not to push them to their limits.

Nothing about consoles is holding PC back it is just that developers don't give a sh*t about PC.

@Dannystaples14: You do know that the devs who make console video cards are the same devs that make PC video cards right?

The cards they put into consoles are NOT the top of the line cards they have made, they are cards that tend to perform well enough for the cost so that they can mass produce them for consoles.

If they were to quickly pump out better cards surpassing consoles even quicker than they already do, then there would be an even larger gap between PC and console graphics, it could potentially even cause more people to switch to PC. This would be like shooting themselves in the foot as they would make less on the cards they make for consoles.

In a world without consoles (not that I care one way or another..) PC graphics would definitely be further advanced than they are now as there would only be the one option (PC). This would have companies fully focusing towards making higher end cards. This would then drive the prices of older cards down, and the average person would own a better video card than the current average.

@SnakekillerX: Yes the ones in Xbox One and PS4 are made by AMD and I never said they were top end.

The reason they don't get cheaper on PC as fast is because they pump out a massive number of different graphics cards instead of just the one for six years.

Why would a console that uses the same trivial GPU design for about six years stop multi-billion dollar companies like Nvidia (who don't even make console GPUs for next gen by the way) from making new cards? Once they've designed the current console's GPU they just churn it out in a factory with almost no further input.

Consoles don't stop GPU production. GPUs get better as fast as the technology in them can advance. It is research and development that is the limiting factor in GPU advancement, not consoles.

You know the whole Moore's Law? Their ability to cram transistors onto chips? THAT is the problem. Nanochemistry and chip fabrication.

If consoles didn't exist GPUs would be designed just as fast as they do now.

@Dannystaples14: "If a 970 struggles with this level of graphics"

proof? Or you are talking out of your a** again?

Mod hasn't been released publicly yet, so we don't know how much it will impact performance. In worst case scenario coming from someone who has actually used ENB's before in different games - considering 970 runs vanilla GTA5 good chunk over 60fps in 1080p on max settings that excess fps chunk could be used to run mod and still maintain constant 60fps.

@Saidrex: Why are you crashing into this discussion? I wasn't even talking to you here.

Are you that butt hurt that you have to take every chance to try and force your deluded opinion onto people?

Also if you have a read back I said "I suggested that using a GTX 970 or lower might give less than ideal performance...".

The key word there being "suggested" in past tense. As in I was talking about our previous conversation to someone who isn't you.

Why don't you go play with your friends? The adults are busy talking here.

@Dannystaples14: don't forget that you can lower graphics settings and game will still look better with mod than it ever was with cranked up settings. Mod like these are flexible - you can adjust settings for your taste or performance.

3rd - initial comments was about graphics like this in PC games, not about mods. If game was initially made with graphics like this it would run much better than with mod because it would be optimized and made from scratch, not injected into existing game with workarounds.

@Saidrex: Are you sure you know how computers work or are you just butt hurt because someone pointed out that this PC fan was talking out of his ass?

This mod INCREASES graphic fidelity. It doesn't matter how you cut it, increased graphics requires FASTER hardware.

The GTX 970 (the most commonly used card on Steam) can't run the base game at 1080p max settings as seen by the video I linked above. So it isn't going to be able to run the mod at 60fps either.

Sure you might be able to tweak settings here and there but then the game still won't look like these screen shots in that case.

Also as you mentioned, mods are unoptimised meaning you need EVEN BETTER hardware to brute force the shit coding.

So no matter how you look at it, games created specifically for PC won't look like this at all because the average gamer wouldn't be able to run it!

@Saidrex: No they can't but considering this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vCM1ffXGhY

shows GTA V running on a 970 on ultra at 1080p and it can't even hit consistent 60fps without mods.

With mods and increase in graphics to the level seen in these screen shots it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that the fps will drop. So in the 970s case it will be heading quickly towards 30fps.

@Dannystaples14: phahahahaha. using some random video on youtube as your source *facepalm* I have GTX770 and even I can play with fps higher than 60 in 1080p on max settings.

1st - videos are proof of nothing, recording software consumes large chunk of resources and that impacts fps significantly.

2nd - some random video of some random dude. Who knows his real hardware, I can write whatever I want in description of video. How outdated or up to date his drivers are? also game version (patches have improved GTA5's performance a lot), how do you know he is not playing initial release version that had worse performance?

And look at the comments and dislikes - even other people noticed that video is complete bs.

dude, when you know nothing about topic better stay quiet than look like a complete fool.

Takes first video he found in youtube search and uses it as proof *facepalm*

@Saidrex: Yeah right, a 770 won't run the game at a constant 60 fps with all sliders to max.

You will get slowdowns in country areas. You need a 980ti to even enable ultra grass in all locations.

I have a G1 980 and can't get a constant 60 all the time in 1080p

@Saidrex: You can dream about how great PC would be without consoles being there forever but you can't escape the the truth that consoles are there, they do make the graphics worse and there is nothing you or any of the other fanboys can do about it except cry on the internet.

Have fun with your mod. Its the best you're going to get for a long time.

@billzihang: they never will. Funny how piracy is something bad because it denies payment to publisher/developer for their product but used games sales on consoles are fine, even necessary, considering they do the exact same thing - deny payment to publisher/developer for their product.
