Now Playing: GS News Update: GTA 4 Is Now Playable on Xbox One

Grand Theft Auto IV is now playable on Xbox One via the console's backwards compatibility program.

This also means the Episodes from Liberty City DLC packs, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, will both work on Xbox One.

If you own GTA IV digitally on Xbox 360, the game should now appear in the Ready to Install section of your library, while physical owners just need to insert the disc and download the game. Developer Rockstar has also confirmed save games will carry over if you've uploaded your save files to the cloud from Xbox 360. If you don't already own the base game, it's available on the Xbox Store for US $20 / £18 / AU $40.

Grand Theft Auto IV originally released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC in 2008. This was followed by the two aforementioned story expansions, as well as a compilation of those in the form of Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City. This double pack is also playable on Xbox One.

Recent additions to the Xbox One backwards compatibility library include Lego Indiana Jones, Rocket Knight, and Shadows of the Damned. There are now more than 300 Xbox 360 games playable on Xbox One in total. To see all of them, check out this list of all the Xbox One backwards compatibility games.

In other backwards compatibility news, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said he has a "never say never" attitude about bringing the feature to PC.

GTA4 is literally the first and only GTA game that I haven't completed because the campaign bored me. Niko Bellic as a character is boring imo.

Best GTA in my opinion.

@twilightangel: GTA San Andreas is still the best in my opinion. (No I'm not Black)

It's a good game, first 10 hours are a little annoying, especially if you have to play them twice of you lost your progress due to your console dying. After that it gets much better though and the DLC was even better with good radio stations.

Had the PC version not been patched recently to correct issues playing it in newer versions of Windows I'd consider this, but I'll stick to playing it maxed out in 4K :)

This game has not aged well, but good to see 5 star games coming to backwards comp

@mattsaroni24: Not aged well? Respectfully disagree, aside from some clunky combat mechanics it's still an amazing game, and better than its successor in most aspects.

Cool. I bought, but never played, Ballad. Got pulled into some other long-format title, and never came back.

@Pyrosa: Same here. In the meantime my 360 died, so never got a chance to play it after that. Must have that disc still laying around somewhere. Gotta find it and pop it in the One. Cheers Microsoft! Nico one!

Interested to see if it gets a performance boost like RDR on Xbone, since on 360 it runs at 25-28ish fps

@Pr0ving4Gr0undz: I wanted Black Ops II because I enjoyed... but that kids begging for it kinda ruined it for me.

Surprising enough, I'm more amaze Grand Theft Auto: 4 has yet to be free for Gold/PS+ since the game is now 9 years old, even for an Xbox One BC feature, giving the game away for free would have been an awesome gift for the BC.

@davillain-: It probably sells incredibly well whenever it goes on sale.

@davillain-: I'm pretty sure it came to psplus back in 2012 or 2013

@gamingdevil800: Wrong. The only GTA free for psplus was liberty city stories for psp in september 2013.
