GTA 4 Gets First Patch in 6 Years on PC

Now compatible with Windows 8 and 10.

Grand Theft Auto IV has received its first patch in over six years, publisher Rockstar Games has revealed.

Unfortunately, if you've been waiting this long with bated breath, you might be disappointed. The PC patch introduces compatibility with Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 operating systems, brings some small performance optimizations, and that's about it.

There's some minor bug fixes, full details of which can be found on Rockstar's support site, but nothing groundbreaking.

GTA and Rockstar have had a muddled recent history on PC. The series' latest, Grand Theft Auto V, did not release on PC at first--non-console players had to wait until April 2015. Players have often relied on the modding community to support the game, rather than Rockstar itself, while we listed GTA IV as one of the five worst PC ports ever.

Red Dead Redemption, also from Rockstar, is yet to come to the platform, while its sequel has so far only been announced for PS4 and Xbox One.

First of all, who plays GTA 4 now that GTA V is here and second, GTA 4 is the worst GTA ever made. San Andreas is 10 times better than GTA 4.

@gokuKOG: Considering that's just an opinion, I'll let your irrational judgement slide. I love GTA IV despite short comings. Niko is one of my most favorite characters in gaming. People have said this which I agree with due to personal experience. GTA SA is great. But when you play GTA IV long enough, then go back to GTA SA, you'll begin to notice that GTA SA is surprisingly dull despite better story missions and variety. GTA SA is put into shame even further after playing GTA V. Age caught up with GTA SA. I enjoy GTA IV's story, even though Niko's Hitman profession is repetitive at times, but Shadow of the Colossus is repetitive and it's one of the greatest games to exist. There are plenty of good reasons why no GTA should exist and plenty of good reasons why they do exist, even GTA IV specifically, same with each GTA game. But hating GTA IV irrationally (judging by what you said) doesn't automatically label it, "worst GTA". GTA IV and TBOGT are my favorites above any other GTA for several reasons, even though GTA V easily crushes all GTAs before it. But it's all a matter of preference. You hate it, I love it. End of story.

We need GTA4 with BOGT and the Lost and Damned remaster on new gen consoles. This must include the online mode for BOGT. I have such fond memories of causing havoc at the airport with the Buzzard choppers 3-6yrs ago. That was my first real experience with proper online gaming lol. Come on Xbox and PS and R*, do your thing please lolololol??????????????

@jomi101: They should mix in all the modes so we aren't switching games. Assuming it doesn't cause tech probs.

After playing the game I couldn't believe it got a 10/10.

It seems like a PS3/360 game that was hyped up massively merely by being one of the first. i.e. It gets a “10” for looking better than a PS2 game.

I hated the game. Aside from the unforgivable laziness on the near-unplayable port, the game was mind-blowingly boring. Drive to this place. “I need you to do something for me” “What?” "Kill this guy.” “No.” “Yes.” “I'm not going to.” “I'll pay you lots of money.” “OK.” Drive to that place, shoot guy. Boom. Drive back. “Good job.” “Well I like money.” “I need you to do something for me.” “No.” “Yes.” And it just went on and on and on like that until the end. I thought it was working up to something, but there was nothing. The number of missions which so obviously only existed for the sake of the trailer. I'm not even a big GTA fan and I felt cheated.

@naryanrobinson: Niko was a Hitman in the events of GTA IV, what did you expect? It's repetitive sure, but you're pretty much speaking for every game that does similar. Shadow of the Colossus comes to mind. Ik that the repetition was on purpose, but the point is, even the best games ever can have repetition. GTA O is a good example, yet people don't whine. Idk exactly the reason for Niko being a Hitman, but it led to some interesting decisions. Also, Niko may have never figured out who sold the group out if he wasn't icing people. GTA IV has room for improvement, I think the expansions tried to accommodate. But honestly, GTA IV and TBOGT expansion are my most favorite GTAs ever, VC a #2 cuz it was my 1st GTA, then GTA V because it's easily the best GTA. I love Niko and some of the activities GTA V doesn't even have. And who doesn't love the ragdoll physics? Niko alone makes GTA IV great in my eyes.

@thetruegamer28: It depends how thoroughly you describe the event.

You could say that Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is repetitive because you just go from temple to temple to temple until it's over. Whereas in fact, the area around each temple was different, getting into each temple was different, what you do in each temple was different, the boss you kill at the end of each temple was different, and the things you could between temples were all fully fleshed out stories in their own right.

GTA IV has you driving down the same streets over and over. You watch a cutscene, which features almost exactly the same conversation every time, then go shoot people. Sometimes one person, sometimes more than one person. Then you drive down the same streets again, with really no obstacles in your way, to a little blip, watch essentially the same cutscene again, then repeat, for about 20-30 hours. Yeah you can fly a helicopter for a few minutes, but it was totally artificial. Just for the trailer. And yes you can play darts but how long are you really going to play darts? Aside from being boring, you get no reward for any of it.

@naryanrobinson: Pretty much every GTA has plenty of those moments. So judging GTA IV alone on that is hypocritical. Call of Duty is that way in every entry. Few break the flow with a stealth mission. Fewer are creative. In the end, you're shooting hordes of enemies between objectives. Yet it's one of the most popular games out there, and fond memories of MP. I enjoy GTA IV and TBOGT mainly for the characters and some of the activities and the stories. I never said the story missions were great. I think the kill this and that missions were unintentional because GTA IV had much more improved combat with a cover system unlike the predecessors, much like why FO4 had a lot of "hitman" missions, and oddly enough FO4 had much more improved combat too unlike its predecessors.

@naryanrobinson: The story line mode wasn't much, I agree. But it was all about he MP mode, causing havoc at the airport with the Buzzard choppers who was the most deadly weapon at the time lol. Unfortunately the modders ruined it at times unless you were on their side against the non modders lololol????

@jomi101: I personally enjoyed Niko's and Luis' stories. Didn't care for TLAD. TLAD is my least favorite of the GTAs by far. But yeah, mp was a blast despite annoying griefers. I'd buy it again in anticipation for a future remaster, but modders destroyed the experience.

It is crazy that they have not made a RDR remaster or RDR PC. Talk about leaving money on the table.

@girlusocrazy: Maybe, but Rockstar knows people hate it, they had the chance to remove it, and they didn't.

@asmcint: True, but there doesn't seem to be a financial reason for them to do so now, I'm surprised to see any patch at all.

I don't think PC gamers should be giving them money, they don't seem to do PC support right.

@Zorlac: Except it does because the update server is frequently offline, so if you've just reinstalled the game there's a pretty decent chance the game will just freeze.

@pongley: In the entire time I used games that had GFWL I can recall 2 instances of not being able to login. it uses the xbox server login which is very rarely down.

@Zorlac: I didn't say login, I said update. And they're not on the same server, the way I know that is because Don Mattrick was planning on shutting GFWL down before he was forced out.

@pongley: Yes they could shut down the GFWL part of the servers without effecting the rest of the servers. How do you think that one game that has cross play worked if they're not the same servers?

@pongley: Completely different situation with rocket league. The cross play game that used GFWL (the name escapes me, sorry) was a microsoft game. It definitely used the same servers for it's cross play.

@Zorlac: Yeah, but they're servers for playing that game, not the GFWL servers.
Multiplayer servers != login/DRM servers.
