Greg Daniels Discusses Future Of The Office And Rules Out Reboot

Series co-creator prefers a new direction in the same universe.

In September, comments from The Office co-creator Greg Daniels sparked speculation about a potential series reboot. In an interview with The Wrap, Daniels clarified, expressing a preference for a new direction in the same universe rather than a complete overhaul. He firmly stated that any revisit of The Office would not be a reboot.

"I don't like to think of anything as a reboot, you know what I mean? Because I feel like we ended that story beautifully. The characters had closure," Daniels said. "I would never want to redo that same show with a different cast, because I think we got the luckiest cast, the best cast ever, in TV, to do that show. So the notion of a reboot is not of interest."

Rather than a reboot, Daniels expressed a desire to explore the universe further, drawing a parallel with Star Wars spinoff shows. "The notion of maybe something like the way The Mandalorian is a new show in the Star Wars universe, you know what I mean?" Daneils said. Something like the notion of this documentary crew doing a documentary about a different subject… That, I think, could be intriguing and creative. But I don't even know what you would call that… it doesn't feel like 'reboot' would be the appropriate term for that."

In 2022, Daniels said one idea to revisit The Office was for it to feature new characters in an "extension of the universe." Steve Carell has said a character like Scott would not fly in today's climate with his off-color jokes.

Daniels spoke with The Wrap in support of his Prime Video series Upload, which just finished Season 3 on the platform.
