Now Playing: The Warriors Video Review

Rockstar Games' PS2 and Xbox classic The Warriors is now available to download and play on the PlayStation 4.

The Warriors is based on the movie of the same name and, unlike the studio's Grand Theft Auto series, is focused more on brawling. It is available on the PlayStation store for £11.99.

"New York, 1979. A battle on the streets. The armies of the night number 60,000 strong, and tonight they’re all after The Warriors--a street gang wrongly accused of killing a rival gang leader," reads the product description.

"The Warriors must make their way from one end of New York to their turf on the other side of the city. All that stands between The Warriors and their survival are 20 miles and thousands of street gang members."

The PS4 version features "full 1080p up-rendering and enhanced features such as Trophies, Shareplay, Remote Play, Activity Feeds and Second Screen support for game manuals with PS Vita or PS App."

The product description notes that the game was converted from the PS2 version and, as a result, there "may be times where the title plays differently from the PS2 version."

The Warriors was first released for PS2 and Xbox in 2005. It was then re-released for PlayStation 3 in 2013. In GameSpot's The Warriors review, it was awarded an 8.6.

"With its unrelenting obsession with nailing the details of the film's universe, its quality action, and its breadth of content, The Warriors is easily one of the better pure-action games to come out this year," said reviewer Alex Navarro.

"It's a game that clearly goes out of its way to do more than just rehash a previously told story, as many games based on films tend to do. Again, though, this is not a game in which you have to have seen the original movie to understand and enjoy it; but if anything, it'll make you want to go out of your way to see the movie, just to see how it plays out and compares to the game experience."

Why would I want to download one of the best movie-to-game adaptations ever made, even though I still own it on PS2?

Remember back when it was released they did a mural back in Coney Island, right on the boardwalk, on the side of one the buildings. Played the game and it was way better than I thought it would be. Check out the move if you haven't, you'll be able to see old New York and shirtless guys with just a vest on, can you dig it? can you dig it? CAN YOU DIIIIIG IT?

I never completed this so will defo pick it up :)

    Can you dig it?

I loved how the game started out like a prequel, 3 months before the events of the movie, but 3 quarters through you play through the events of the actual movie too, so awesome. One of the best games ever.

I like to drive around in a hearse at night clicking bottles from my fingertips saying "warriors, come out and play-ay". People look at me like I'm nuts

    Avatar image for simonbelmont2

    @Moonco: Luther was hilarious!

    Avatar image for moonco

@simonbelmont2: Did you know Ajax and Luther were in the movie '48 Hours' lol

    Avatar image for simonbelmont2

@Moonco: Ha, ha yeah I did as I've seen that movie a few times. David Patrick Kelly (Luther) also played Sully in Commando and T-Bird in The Crow.

I was wondering if they only released it in Europe by that price tag. I clicked it and now I'm glad they have it in America. It's weird they put euros. No bashing on Euros here but normally gamespot puts dollars in every article unless something is only released in another country.

    Avatar image for RaveNRolla

@jose_consuela: that would be british pound, the euro sign looks like this: €. judging from the pound-price it'll probably be 15$ / 15€.

I'd rather play the XBox version in 720p. It has FAR better textures, lighting, and shadows than the PS2 version.

WHY do they insist on porting the inferior PS2 versions to PS4? Port the XBox versions (or, pc versions for games like Max Payne). I'm quite sure the PS4 can handle it.

Teaser: "Warriors, Come out to play". Maaan that does not read like it sounds.

(I would go "Wahwiahs, come out to playiyayyy")

    Avatar image for simonbelmont2

@mcwingstar: Luther is one of the all time great movie psychos.

Loved to play this on PS2

    Avatar image for Carpetfluff

I still don't see why if I paid for this on PS3, I can't just have it on PS4. Or at least upgrade it for a nominal charge.

    Avatar image for batusai4ever

another old @ss game on new's are just so fvcking lazy....guess they ran out of ideas for good quality games and continue to milk simple minded moron that will continue to pay for the same game multiple times

    Avatar image for Flyin3lvl

@batusai4ever: square got me good. have final fantasy games on the ps1. then re brought 3 off them on ps3. have them all ps vita. and the games I had on psp (dissisia) are now re brought on vita. and re brought the ps2 games on the ps4. I have ff7 ps1-ps3- vita- ps4.

I'm not a moron I choose to buy them. not forced. choose.

    Avatar image for DrunkenPunk800

@batusai4ever: The Warriors is the best movie licensed game ever made. It beats the hell out of most games from current and last gen.

    Avatar image for Duffy12323

@batusai4ever: A lot of people will gladly play it again on the newer console. You don't have to buy it, just go about your life..

    Avatar image for batusai4ever

@Duffy12323: and that's why they keep feeding us the same old games, because of people like you that keep the milking alive and dev's aren't forced to create new games. Why would they??? They just say "Hey, that Duffy12323 will pay again for a 10-20 year old game so why bother getting creative"

    Avatar image for runstalker

@batusai4ever: As if the teams doing ports and remasters are the same teams working on new games. All this stuff is small, secondary teams or completely outsourced.

I love these dime-a-dozens comments: "Durr, why are they wasting time and money on retro ports and remasters when it could be going to new games!?"

    Avatar image for mkeezay22

I remember the MP battles were also pretty fun, I enjoyed it, been a long time though.

    Avatar image for mrbojangles25

Completely forgot they even made this game. IIRC, it was pretty good.

    Avatar image for novasolid

@7tizz: I to have the og xbox version, and maybe u had to play it at the time it came out. But a lot of the things u do in the game, just weren't being done in other games. Me and my friend had a blast playing co-op back in the day, and the roof top rumble's, unbelievable for the time!!!

"Grand Theft Auto Dev's The Warriors Released on PS4"

Why not simply say Rockstar? This is an ugly ass title.

    Avatar image for homelessgamer

@RogerioFM: so they make games and energy drinks?

    Avatar image for Barighm

@RogerioFM: Because the uninformed, of which there are vastly many, don't know Rockstar from Nintendo, but they know Grand Theft Auto.

    Avatar image for DrunkenPunk800

@Barighm: This site is called GAMEspot. Not NOOBspot... though maybe it should be.

    Avatar image for Warlord_Irochi

@DrunkenPunk800: Then TROLLspot would cut it better, just check the comments in any Destiny article and you'll see :P

    Avatar image for hystavito

@DrunkenPunk800: Most of the readers probably are "noobs" :).

    Avatar image for Maxx_the_Slash

I remember when The Warriors was re-released on the PS3 as download. It's fantastic to see that once again Xbox goes completely forgotten for a re-release of their version.

    Avatar image for WilliamRLBaker

@Maxx_the_Slash: looked like crap on the ps3 much like psychonauts looked horrible, let's hope this gets more than a upres.

Wish they'd use the Xbox version it was the superior version.

    Avatar image for Flodiac

@Maxx_the_Slash: So is there no plans at all for a Xbox one release?

    Avatar image for rushiosan

This article implies nobody ever heard about The Warriors game. I love how they have to put "GTA dev's game" to assure a few clicks. Bravo.

    Avatar image for ILSATS

@rushiosan: If you were in their positions you would do the same.

    Avatar image for solidsnake7882

@rushiosan: I know of Rockstar since Gta 3 and I know of most of their games and have never heard of this game.

    Avatar image for DrunkenPunk800

    @solidsnake7882: Noob.

First Rockstar game I played was Thrasher Skate and Destroy. Great game!

    Avatar image for louixiii

It was a great game for its time. I don't want nor have time to revisit it, but to anyone who haven't played The's a classic

    Avatar image for darthrevenx
