Gran Turismo 7 Probably Coming Before 2017, Will Have Better Crash Physics

Creator says that 2017 is too long to wait for the next installment.

Gran Turismo hasn't been in the news lately, but the next installment in the PlayStation-exclusive racing series may not be too far away.

Creator Kazunori Yamauchi, in an interview with the Italian games webstie SpazioGames, expressed hope that Gran Turismo 7 will come some time before 2017 for the PlayStation 4. When asked about a potential 2017 launch date, the creator responded, "People will not wait so much... We are talking about Gran Turismo, we must not wait so long."

Gran Turismo 6
Gran Turismo 6

Yamauchi also spoke about collisions and impact physics in Gran Turismo 7, stating that developer Polyphony is taking impact simulation very seriously. is working to solve many of the problems that other entries in the series have had with physics.

Finally, Yamauchi confirmed that GT 7 will feature more premium (or "detailed") cars, which have greater damage modeling and a higher level of detail on interiors, headlights, and other parts of the cars.

Yamauchi's statements further reiterate what he said in October 2014. At that point, he remarked that GT 7 is "going to be a game that matches the very era that we live in, in 2015 or 2016." It seems pretty clear that the game will come in the next year and a half--but since we still don't know much about the next installment, it's likely that we won't get to play Gran Turismo 7 until later in 2016.

Even though the game is still a ways off, we may see Gran Turismo 7 appear at the E3 conference next week. Keep an eye on GameSpot for all Gran Turismo news.

Forza will probably come out with 4 current gen games before GT comes out with one...and all of Forza's will Most likely be better.

@boardsport311: Had Forza with my X360, sold it for 1$ at BestBuy. I could not care less about it. I still wonder what people like about it. Polyphony can't seem to pop a new game without decades of delays, but at least the games are the best in the genre.

I don't think Gran Turismo will ever reach the heights they had from GT 1-4, especially the 3rd and 4th installments, which undoubtedly rank among the top 5 greatest racing games ever. I still think Gran Turismo 7 will be darn good though.

At the end of the day, nothing can ever beat the greatest racing game ever made in Burnout 3. A true masterpiece.

Hopefully GT 7 can take back the racing crown from Forza. It looks like Drive Club could have competed . . . if it actually worked.

@Pelican170: more realistic...the last time I played GT I would bounce off other cars in the turns at over 100 mph to get into the lead. Try that in forza and see what happens. Of course if you turn off damage and all the driving assist on forza is more arcade like but hey.

@bentleyj10: Iv played em both and iv been gaming forever, I consider myself fairly knowledgeable on these things. Other than horizon, which I haven't played, Forza has been the superior racer since the first xbox....I'm sorry if this upsets you but it's true.

@bentleyj10: I've played and finished all of them as well, GT since it released on the PSX (yes) and I've played every sim on the PC as well. While I love my Forza games (own and played all of them) GT is definitely more realistic and therefore more enjoyable to a sim fan rather than arcade racing fan. I'm sure you'll find this very upsetting?

@nsignific: actually I dont....should I? I'm not really huge on racing games nowadays so idk what the last GT was like but iv played them all before that and all forzas except 5 and the horizons. These games are all about consoles so your pc Sim play carries little weight. And since when is a racing game where you can bounce off cars to get the lead more realistic?

@bentleyj10: Just going by your assumption that talking about this is upsetting, so I don't know, should you? By the way, my PC sim experience carries *loads* of weight when determining which of the two games (GT/Forza) is more realistic, which *is* a considerably important factor both try to market themselves as. And realism is not solely dependend on collisions - in fact, in a racing sim, that's the least important aspect.

GT is dead, no more GT for me. After 5 I can't be bothered with another GT games. They killed the online in 5 so that micro transaction heavy 6 where you make chump change will sell better. But it won't and never will, kaz and Sony killed GT and we should keep it buried.

Assetto corsa if sims are your thing, project carsbis pretty decent as well. Forza is worse than GT, that game blows. It's not a sim.

Why is he suddenly so concerned with releasing as many sequels as possible? GT was never about that. Is Sony pressuring him to release more games now?

I would hope it comes out before 2017! How is it that Turn10 and other racing developers can crank out superior games in half the time it takes Polyphony to regurgitate the same, obsolete structure that it's always stuck with?

@grognard66: I think that Polyphony needs to bring in some new blood, the same old designers are thinking in the same old ways. When I think of how amazing GT was back in the day and I see what it has become I get very sad.

I'm sorry...this is unacceptable. By the time GT7 comes out there will be a Forza 7 that will most compete on an even keel if not better. The studio needs a shake up. I can understand extended development cycles when you have phenomenal games and no competition, but this has not been the case. The best days for Gran Turismo were on the PS2.

@Andycreep1: project cars isnt shit your just likely shit at it lol a racing game is only as realistic as you can accept. The problem people have is they cant stand not winning, after years of coming first on lap one and doing time trials for every other lap it comes as a shock to some people to actually be fighting for tenth place which is how it should be until you get truely good.

Plenty of aspects to improve tho, still too many bugs in the game, still way too punishing for going off track even by inches, still no pit lane action thats visible, bit overall its a good game with high production values and when the racing gets good it gets mighty good

We're already half way through 2015, I think it's safe to say that GT7 will not release this year, so that leaves 2016. My money's on GT7 releasing around thanksgiving 2016, if they stick by their loosely structured schedule.

I think at this point the GT franchise is on life support and seriously needs to show up prepared to completely blow anything the recent/relevant racing games are doing out of the water. GT6 certainly hasn't lead anyone, outside of fanboys, to believe they're capable of doing so. It doesn't even sound realistic to expect them to, imo. I don't think I've ever been let down more by a game than when I bought a PS3, primarily to play GT6.

You bought a PS3 after the PS4 launched to play GT6? Or did you mean GT5?

I love the GT series, I've played them all since the first, but yeah I got GT6 when it came out - and after playing Forza 5 on the XB1... it felt lifeless, and not very fun. Forza has turned into an excellent game series and while it's not really fair to compare PS3 hardware to XB1 hardware, the gap between the two games was huge, and it was more than just graphics, it's everything from handling, to tire models to the fantastic drivatars which make AI drivers much more human, being they're not on a straight line and they can be predictable.

Still though... I got a PS4 pretty much for GT7 - I knew it won't launch for a while but I'd build up my PS+ library in the meantime. But wow... the PS4 line-up has been pretty awful and the racers for the platform have been even worse.

In comparison to Forza games, I honestly think that Polyphony's development team seem to over complicate things. Why does it take so long to make a racing game? Ok, its GT, but man, two Forza games have been released for Xbox consoles on the same time period, and a third is coming. And shouldn't features like impact physics or interior detail be taken for granted on such a high profile game???

@StonerDemon: Because GT physics are #1. Its a simulation game and personally Forza doesnt compete when it comes to that. Forza. To me, Forza is arcady and lacking compared to GT. Just my opinion as I know Forza is popular.

@Pelican170: I agree with you and by the way, I'm a Sony loyal. But I think Polyphony are taking too long to make GT7. That game must have several years in development, and they are still talking about making efforts to have more premium cars and interiors??? All cars should have premium detail for granted, that should be a standard. I've never heard anyone from Forza development team talking about this kind of stuff; those guys seem to manage their schedules better. That's what I can't understand.

@StonerDemon: Yes, I agree with the premium detail. Personally, I dont care how long the game takes to come out as long as its perfect from the get go! Im sick and tired of having to wait for patches. That is more annoying to me than waiting for a game to release...

@Pelican170: This problem with schedules is what has been giving Forza an "advantage" in terms of releases. They release game after game while Polyphony mess with their deadlines. At this point, after almost 20 years, Kasunori Yamauchi has all the budget and respect he deserves to make this game the way it's meant to be done. I'm not criticizing those "100 skylines, 1000 miatas", because those little differences are what make this game a real simulator. I just hope that this time the team will correct all the typical problems with the franchise (collision, AI, premium detail). GT has to reach the top again.
