Gran Turismo 6 Passes 5 Million Sales, Series Climbs to 76.8 Million

Best-selling Gran Turismo games revealed.

Polyphony Digital has updated its website to include new sales figures for Gran Turismo, the Japanese developer's marquee racing franchise. Among other things, we learn that the latest entry in the series, 2013's Gran Turismo 6, has now sold more than 5 million copies (5,010,000 to be exact). Another standout figure is 76.8 million, which is the total number of Gran Turismo games sold to date.

These figures are accurate as of June 30. Prior to this, the figures were updated for March 31, when Gran Turismo 6 sales stood at 4.96 million (via NeoGAF); this means the game shifted some 50,000 copies in three months. This may sound like a small number, but note that it's for a PlayStation 3 game released three years ago.

The sales chart also shows that Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec is the best-selling entry in the franchise, having shifted some 14.89 million copies. The worst-performer is Gran Turismo 4 Prologue, which has sold 1.4 million copies.

Below is a rundown of Gran Turismo franchise sales, on a worldwide basis. You can visit Polyphony's website to see a breakdown by geographic region.

The next Gran Turismo game is Gran Turismo Sport for PlayStation 4, which is scheduled to launch in November. Looking ahead, Polyphony boss Kazunori Yamauchi has told fans to expect Gran Turismo 7...eventually.

Nice, but just imagine how many more copies they could sell if they actually put real cockpits in the dang cars.

@lonesamurai1: Considering that GT 3 alone outsells Forza as a franchise, and that the second worst game in the franchise would probably be the best selling in the franchise , its safe to say gt is the king of sim racing.

The problem I have with the GT series is the amount of time between entries. It's been 3 years since GT6 and all we're getting is Sport with GT7 "eventually". I could see if all that time lead to a massively superior product, but it doesn't. It's about on par or even below what else is out there for either of the systems.

Forza has become my go to racing franchise because I can't race rumors, promises or screen shots.

@ch2423: My problem with Forza is that other than graphics, which get better and better, the franchise killed off or ruined most of the features I liked starting with the auction house. I honestly think Forza 2 is the best game in the series with 3 still being great and 4 okay, but 5 crap. And they got rid of the best Fuiji Kaido.

I do still like Forza but I don't rush out to buy the latest game. I still haven't picked up 6.

@divinejester: Forza 5 was pretty bad. It was rushed to make the launch of the XB1 and it showed. Forza 6 is a much better effort and is everything 5 wasn't. Copies are getting pretty cheap, so if you see a deal on it, I highly recommend picking it up.

Pretty impressive for GT6 considering many, myself included, never even realised it was out until they had moved onto the current gen thus never had a chance of playing it.

Bring on the next one!

I seem to remember people being pissed off at GT6 because the game was full of DLC.

GT5 and 6 were totally ruined by the DS3 for me.

Trying to race with those shit triggers or the face buttons was appawling.

When the offical best control scheme is using an analogue stick to accellerate you know your game is fucked.

@Halloll: Yeah if you have a couple 100 spare and a significant space to set it up.

Frankly I'd rather use a controller.

Ah the good ol' days of GT 2 & 3. Soundtracks than included the likes of Feeder. You knew you were gonna' win when Buck Rogers played on the last lap.

The real news here is how people have lost faith in the franchise. Pretty sad and the next GT doesn't look that much more promising. Polyphony has simply lost its way with this franchise since GT4. What fans of the series have been given since are pretty much "remasters" of GT4 and instead of concentrating on what is important in this series (aka simulation racing) they decided to concentrate on modes that no one cared about.

@kyelo: The sale numbers speak for themselves. If you are too blind to see that, thats your problem. Besides a fresh coat of paint the next GT game (GTS) has pretty much no innovation shown thus far and still have the issue of having generic sounds for most cars and carries over the same issues that GT5-6 had. So unless this changes and that everyone is suddenly wowed, then yes Polyphony has lost its way. As for GT7 I don't even expect it to make it this gen. When it does, it will have to compete with other sim/racing games that have picked up the ball that Polyphony dropped years ago.

GT2 was my jam! Loved that thing. But there was a error that prevented you from getting 100%. I still remember the races I and my friends had. Plus the soundtrack! loved it. It was never the same after that. Haven't GT'd since.

Dang thats a big drop. From 18 million from GT5 to 5 million for GT6. GT PSP bout sold more then GT6. I wonder what happened. We have fewer racers now then back in the day.

@iandizion713: Put simply GT6 launched after the PS4/XB1, there also wasn't much of a marketing campaign because of that...Sony was pushing 'next gen'.

@iandizion713: We have fewer yes but they are better. Polyphony was riding their own wave haven't innovated since GT4. They went from amazing simulation/racing game to a simple average one when developers around them were working hard to give a true next gen experience since the XB360/PS3 generation. I won't even bother picking up their next game unless reviews and the demo are fantastic at what GT is supposed to be.

@iandizion713: That was because GT5 was a bit of a let down for a lot of people. A bad game always reflects on the next iteration. Take a look at Assassin's Creed Unity, that sold like hot cakes but Syndicate lost out due to the bugs etc in Unity.

the Best GT game I played was Gran Turismo 3 A-Space when I bought the bundle. I remember my friend hearing I bought it and he rushed to my house and started playing it before I got the chance to.

@Star650: Yes, it's my favorite GT game. It had the best gameplay. The second game had more content, but the graphics of 3 were jaw-dropping at the time. I could never get into 4 and although I enjoyed 5, it felt more like work than fun.
