As part of GOG's ongoing Summer Sale, you can grab Total Annihilation: Commander Pack for free until Sunday, June 7 at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET. Total Annihilation is a beloved classic strategy that sadly never received a sequel. But if you're in the mood to play a '90s-era real-time strategy game, it's definitely worth checking out.

Originally released in 1997, Total Annihilation received widespread critical acclaim. It earned a 9.3/10 in our Total Annihilation review and wound up winning GameSpot's Game of the Year award. Set in a distant future across numerous planets and moons, Total Annihilation features a full-scale galactic war that was jumpstarted by the newfound ability to transfer human consciousness to computers. The campaign lets you play on both sides of the war, fighting for either the rebel humans or the machines that used to be humans.

At the time, Total Annihilation's mechanics were fairly unique to the RTS genre, with resources piling up constantly and the Commander (the most powerful unit) having novel skills like invisibility, one-hit kills, more streamlined travel, and faster building speeds.

The Commander Pack comes with both pieces of DLC, The Core Contingency and Battle Tactics. The Core Contingency adds 25 new campaign missions, while Battle Tactics adds a whopping 100 new missions.

Though Total Annihilation will obviously feel dated now, it's still worth downloading for free if you've never played it. The game's lead designer eventually led development on Supreme Commander, which is considered a Total Annihilation successor. Anyone with experience with the Supreme Commander franchise will recognize the bones of the excellent RTS gameplay in Total Annihilation.

Total Annihilation is far from the only free game available now; make sure to take a peek at our running list of every free game you can snag for a limited time.
