Gotham City Impostors goes free-to-play on Steam

New version of Monolith's multiplayer shooter hits Valve's storefront for free; available add-ons total nearly $60.

A free-to-play version of Monolith Productions' multiplayer shooter Gotham City Impostors has launched on Valve's online store Steam. The game's arrival for free comes without any official announcement from publisher Warner Bros.

Gotham City Impostors has gone free-to-play, at least on Steam.
Gotham City Impostors has gone free-to-play, at least on Steam.

A range of paid downloadable content packs for Gotham City Impostors are available, including costumes, weapons, and companion offerings. In total, all add-on packs for Gotham City Impostors cost $59.83.

The game made its debut in February on Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and PC as a $15 download. It's not clear if Gotham City Impostors for consoles will also adopt a free-to-play business model, and as of press time, Warner Bros. had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment.

I've got this on PS3, I downloaded the 60min demo and ended up downloading the full game after 20mins of playing it. It's comical factor is a breathe of fresh air to the FPS world after all the seriousness of other games in recent years. It's a very well balanced game and is easy to pick up and play without having to learn every little detail. With customization of guns, characters, voices and more you can make your perfect comic book character and shoot other comic book characters in the face whilst laughing histerically, what more do you want?!

It was pointed that it would be free to play when they announced game, they changed that 2 week before launch, so it's not strange that they did this.

Free to play or not this game is so broken it's not enjoyable. With huge amounts of lag and matchmaking issues those should be address instead of making the game free to play

@whttyger I have yet to try this free version out but hopefully the removal of GFWL took away those problems. Hopfully.

Fee To Pay model should be made illegal.

Its a con and a rip off. False advertising at its best.

@brynhyfryd It depends on how they implement it, league of legends for example could be played entirely with no money going in, it'd just take a while.

@brynhyfryd I really don't see what you're getting at. It's a con for... what reason, exactly? I mean, just using what I've seen of Gotham City Imposters as an example, players can unlock any of the weapons, bonus, or general game affecting items that they want just from playing the game. They can also unlock many of the cosmetic items without ever spending money on the game. They have access to every single game mode without having to spend money on the game.

On the other hand, if someone makes a decision to purchase one of the weapons or items right away, or purchase one of the cosmetic items in the game, that's a rip off? I mean, you can hand pick whatever loadout you want for free with just a few hours of play, and the preset classes hold you over until then... so speaking of a con, rip off, or false advertising, I have to ask: Which part?

@Jaxith The article clearly states that there is effectively $60 worth of add on content.

Why not sell the game at $20 a head? because the gullible minority will spend wads of cash on the game. I guarantee that there will be more content added in the future. This model is designed to extract $100 if not $1000 over time from the dedicated player.

@brynhyfryd Of course it's designed to make more money over time. That's just the nature of things. But it doesn't change that there's really no need to spend any money on the game. Dedicated players will pretty much get everything for free anyway, except for cosmetic items.

My whole point is, how can something be a scam when you can enjoy the full game without once touching your credit card? Sure, you might not be able to dress like a pirate while doing it, but that's just extra anyway. There is absolutely NO POINT where someone is forced to pay money to keep playing and enjoying the game.

@brynhyfryd @Jaxith

I thought the game was already like this with the option to unlock as you play or just buy content with money? Except it was $15 to get the game first. So making it F2P and keeping everything the same is better isn't it? I might be wrong though, I don't have the game or anything, if I am incorrect I apologize for my lack of knowledge of this matter.

@brynhyfryd Fee To Pay .. I know what you meant to say, but it sounds really cool. It is like your saying " Paying a Fee to play a game is an outrage". Like I said though .. I am aware you meant to say Free To Play .. so don't get all mad at me or anything.

@HiroArka Not getting mad at you.lol

What annoys me with this FTP model is that its being adverised as free to play when it clearly is not simply due to the fact that there will come a point where you are forced to pay in order to continue playing.

Hence why I name it "Fee To Pay".lol

@brynhyfryd Not really, it doesn't cost you anything to download and play the game, thus Free to Play. Buying guns or whatever has no impact on your ability to actually play the game.

I thought the game was pretty fun when I played it half a year ago, but like many others, I lost interest rather fast. It seems like there were too many people using the same customized character layout

I assume that free-to-play for this game is one way to attract interest in it as it was done with other games.

Paid money for this game and it was unplayable on my PC... I had horrible slow downs, sound would cut out and the game would crash every so often. Hope they fix these issues... also they should give those who purchased the steam version $15 worth of "free-to-play" money or whatever they call it.

@yomonkey Yeah if you spent 5 seconds researching before you went posting an entitled whinge, you'd have known about the Platinum DLC pack all previous owners of the game have been given free.

@DarkSaber2k if i feel entitled to anything, its an update to make the game playable on my more than capable rig. Even then I don't care too much. I'm glad they're offering bonuses to those who purchased the game. I wasn't complaining that they weren't offering such a thing, simply hoping that they would not knowing one way or the other. Chill out a bit yo.

@DarkSaber2k Last thing, there's a difference between whining or being falsely entitled, and hoping the providers of a dysfunctional service one paid money for fix said service and bring it to the advertised standards.

I am glad I didn't get it, games that are built on multiplayer only and you have to pay to acquire it, you have to be careful these days if you buy it and if a company sees that it is not doing so well as pay up front platform but care enough to see if it will do well as play for free with the options to buy upgrades. You may be out of luck, Luckily for those who brought it on Steam WB is working something out for those who paid for it, for the copies that was brought prior to the new format may not work on Steam.

I dont mind that the game is free to play now. that stuff happens when you have a multiplayer only game. But that you have to buy all DLC again is just madness. and i doubt they will get away with that.

I agree 100% and if WB thinks I am going to pay for options that I already paid for they are wrong. I use Steam as well and WS said they were going to do something for Steam users soon but as far as those outside of Steam I don't know.
