Google Stadia Games Are Not Running At 4K, But Google Says That's On The Developers

"We expect that many developers can, and in most cases will, continue to improve their games on Stadia."

Google Stadia is now in the hands of players, and some are reporting that it does not deliver on what was initially promised. The system, which launched with several features missing and which currently feels like a "costly curiosity," has now been accused of not rendering games at the promised resolution. While Google has promised 4K resolution for all games, a report by Digital Foundry found that flagship launch title Red Dead Redemption 2 renders at 1080p or 1440p before being upscaled by the Chromecast Ultra. Destiny 2 also runs at 1080p, Eurogamer reports.

That same report from Eurogamer contains a statement from Google about what is happening here, and whether or not they feel that Stadia is achieving what the company promised it would. "Stadia streams at 4K and 60 FPS," the statement reads. "That includes all aspects of our graphics pipeline from game to screen: GPU, encoder and Chromecast Ultra all outputting at 4K to 4K TVs, with the appropriate internet connection."

"Developers making Stadia games work hard to deliver the best streaming experience for every game. Like you see on all platforms, this includes a variety of techniques to achieve the best overall quality. We give developers the freedom of how to achieve the best image quality and framerate on Stadia and we are impressed with what they have been able to achieve for day one."

Google is essentially saying that it's on developers if their game renders at a lower natural resolution. "We expect that many developers can, and in most cases will, continue to improve their games on Stadia," the statement continues. "And because Stadia lives in our data centers, developers are able to innovate quickly while delivering even better experiences directly to you without the need for game patches or downloads."

For now, it seems that the Stadia cannot match the performance offered by the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X for every title currently available on the system. It was also promised that Stadia titles would deliever 60fps performance; according to users on Reddit, this has not been the case.

While several of the Stadia's launch titles had their release dates pushed forward at the last minute, both Red Dead Redemption 2 and Destiny 2 were part of the originally announced launch line-up. The majority of Stadia games available now at ports (except for Gylt, the system's one exclusive,) and they're not cheap.

I wonder how this will affect future games then. On the one side the Gamers won't have already bought the game once, and yet on the development side, they have to spec the game for a different console again.

The Stadia is like the biggest April's fools joke ever, Perhaps someone should tell them its November.

According to Google, ISPs will give increases to data caps for all their customers because they are nice, Software developers will spend money improving games on a system that was dead on arrival, Everyone who lives in a house where someone wants to use the Stadia will all be happy to be offline whilst they play, Oh and according to Google it wont be long till the Stadia has negative lag and run with less loss or response time than a console or computer in your home errrr what!!!!, I don't know what the people at google are taking but I wouldn't mind trying it.

Google thought developers was going to go all in and provide all the bells and whistles, wow google thought wrong. What developers did do is make the game but at the lowest cost to them as time goes by some may stay and some may abandon the Stadia as they are waiting to see how well or not it is received. It offers no features that surpass traditional consoles.

Pretty much the only key draw for this thing for gamers, outside of playing on multiple devices, would be if it could outperform what they currently game on. Oh well...

Wow, so now Google is blaming developers for the fact that Google made promises they can't fulfill. Because yes, of course developers would "choose" to deliver their games (that are already capable of native 4K) at a lower quality on Stadia. Makes perfect sense.

No. The sooner Stadia fails and stop this nonsense, the better it will be for everyone!

The devs probably realized it would be a less than perfect look on their game at 4K, so decided this was the best compromise. This is really marketed at such a niche audience, it is destined to fail, like a large portion of what google does.

@igroku: I agree with your post as I see the same way as Stadia does not allow the user to keep its games if it bottoms up and a couple of other wrinkles as well.

@igroku: No I doubt this is the case at all! I'm sure developers were all really excited that they would be able to deliver their games as they intended, with all the visual bells and whistles at 4K. This is after all the entire point of Stadia. But Google have let EVERYONE down by failing to deliver on their side.

@cottonfly: It is one of the problems as dev are not going to go all in until they see how well the system handles games and how well it sells. if the Stadia fails so does the devs if no one is buying Stadia they are not buying the games so as an cautionary measure they are not going all out as to blunt the lost of profits if the Stadia does fail. Stadia has an a few strikes against it going out the door but they will still push it.

@dacontag: Hey, now! Competition is good. You'd think MS would be doing the whole $1 Game Pass thing if there wasn't major competition from some of the biggest companies in the world?
