Google has hired industry veteran Noah Falstein as Chief Game Designer, though it is unclear what his duties at the technology giant will be. The news comes by way of TechCrunch, which spotted Falstein's updated LinkedIn resume, stating he joined Google last month.

Falstein has been in the games business since 1980, holding positions at LucasArts, 3DO, and DreamWorks Interactive. Most recently, he launched The Inspiracy, a consultancy firm for game production and design.

As part of his consulting work, Falstein worked with Remedy Entertainment to review a "major revision" to Alan Wake during a two-week "course correction" procedure.

No specifics about Falstein's position at Google have been specified, but TechCrunch points out that he has previously shown a significant interest in making "Serious Games." Falstein defines the endeavor as "using games, game technology, or game industry techniques for a purpose other than pure entertainment."

LinkedIn seems to have a purpose for Leak-dIn...that's cool.

I hope a former Lucas Arts chap can bring some force still.

Google is working on a gaming service, a la Apple's Game Center. I would imagine that's what this hiring is about.

Me Thinking. Meh. programmers have programming work to do... not really big deal

Then i thought of Google Glasses...

AAA Game on that would be interesting... My Thoughts got way too carried away lol

Avatar image for freedomspopular

@EDFXNights Ingress on Glass would be pretty sweet.

Software engineering and developpement for a video game is pretty much the same as any other software. He will surely not work on a game, but surely on a Google project. Maybe related to mobile (as mobile have restrictions like a console does), and maybe related to media (we can suppose). That's all we can suppose for now.

Perhaps they want to make a AAA game for an upcoming Nexus device......

Google hire him for Ouya.

Avatar image for Majkic666

@MatrixGamer78 uhm Google aren't making Ouya so cant see how you come to that conclusion

Avatar image for MatrixGamer78

Ouya is world first Android base console that is the reason...Got it.

Avatar image for Majkic666

@MatrixGamer78 @Majkic666 I know that but it's not Google who is making it.... so your comment is still invalid

That's good news. Google has a lot of billion dollars that's why they hire LucaArt employees to work and make a plenty of money. :O

hummm okay

I expect to see a "Google Games" along with maps, images and news on their home page, with games that work in the browser and Android devices.

Google and the rise of HTML5

Avatar image for SLjimbolian

I don't think it's gonna be huge like a new Google "console", but it's something to keep an eye on. In the short term, Google will add more support for its Chrome browser games, but who knows where it will wind up in the long term.

Google Cloud gaming hehe using google fiber. Eh who knows.. it could always be an app or something.

Avatar image for Hurvl

I also like Serious Games, if that involves Serious Sam :P. I play games for entertainment, not much else.

Avatar image for IanNottinghamX

I can totally see Google making a console..If google steps into console making.....well we will see more of the same shit lol

Avatar image for 2bitSmOkEy

@IanNottinghamX I could see them attempting some sort of cloud gaming service, similar to Onlive. I only bring that up because they're launching googlefiber.

Hopefully Google will get in the gaming business, the more games the better, the more competition the better.

Avatar image for XZeroKPS

Certainly would be interesting seeing Google developing games...

Avatar image for berserker66666

Maybe google's gonna sponsor Star Wars 1313

Avatar image for commanderxp90

@berserker66666 I hope so! The Google let the LucaArt developers what they want to make Star Wars 1313! :D

Avatar image for enartloc

Microsoft just shit in it's pants

Avatar image for Johny_47

Could be a great move, maybe Google wants to make a game... or a console. They could name it Googlestation or Googlebox or even Google U haha =P

Avatar image for 2bitSmOkEy

Happy to see both Lucas Arts vets AND Google in the gaming industry.

Avatar image for PETERAKO

there are certain reprecautions If google turns to game development. I believe that her games will most propably be litered with microtransactions. I think that this will be Google beign google.

Avatar image for Adavanter

If it's Google Squadron I am so there. G-wing versus Bing fighter count me in!

Anything else... meh. :P

Avatar image for sefrix

Wow that is interesting. I mean it's not about DRM or Nintendo so there's not a lot of comments. But Google hiring a "Chief Game Designer" is pretty big news.

Avatar image for DarckArchon

it be so sick if Google decides to enter the gaming business

Avatar image for Stebsis

I would like to know if Falstein himself applied to work on Google, or did Google scout him out. If he himself went there, then it'd most likely be just some "normal" Google stuff etc.and not game related, but if people from Google personally contacted him and wanted on board, that could suggest they're also planning to put him to good use too.
