It's been no secret that search engine giant Google has been interested in expanding into the world of games. Today that expansion goes live, as Google has started rolling out a games section for its Google+ social network.

While not all users have access to the new "Games" tab at the top of the Google+ home page, the service has added a selection of more than a dozen games to help launch its initiative. The lineup is led by a handful of games that have already met with success on other platforms, including Angry Birds, Bejeweld Blitz, and Dragon Age Legends. Google has said it hopes to have the titles available to all Google+ users "soon."

As would be expected, the games will integrate with the existing social functionality of Google+. Players will be able to see updates on their friends' activity, invite each other to games, and tout their own accomplishments in the titles. However, those game updates will only be viewable when players go to their own gaming tab, so as not to clutter up their primary Google+ page.

While Google+ still trails Facebook significantly, it is at least off to a quick start. In just over a month of operation, the invite-only social networking service accumulated 25 million registered users. Facebook reports that it has more than 750 million active users.
