Before Richard Garriott created the acclaimed Ultima series, he made Akalabeth: World of Doom, now considered to be the grandfather of modern role-playing games. This classic game, originally released in 1980 for the Apple II, is now available to download for free from The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red's GOG.com. It has been added to GOG's library of free games.

"Originally, the creator wrote Akalabeth for his own entertainment but was persuaded by a friend at a local computer store to try selling it," CD Projekt Red says about Garriott and Akalabeth.

Garriott released Akalabeth 35 years ago in a way that now seems absurd. He made copies of the game himself and put them in ziplock bags, complete with instruction sheets (pictured at left).

The game itself lets you play as a fighter or a mage, battling through a series of enemy-filled dungeons. Akalabeth is now available on GOG for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Alongside the arrival of Akalabeth today on GOG, the store is putting the full Ultima catalog on sale for up to 80 percent off. This timed promotion runs through the morning of December 26.

For more on Akalabeth, check out the image gallery below.

You'd have to be really old or have a lifelong dream of completing every RPG ever made to give this one a go.

This stuff takes the kind of person with commitment.

As someone who found it hard to stay interested in Skyrim beyond 30 hours, I don't think I'm that person.

This game makes pixelated retro indie games look like Crysis, lol. I'm not that bothered by dated graphics, but this is a bit too simple for me. The game was released 5 years before I was born, so no wonder it looks like that.

If it would look like the title picture, then I would be impressed. Right now SanctuaryRPG is enough for me from this type of games.

How is this the grandfather of modern role playing games?? Temple of Apshai came out a year earlier. Maybe the grandfather of 3D RPGs.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I might be wrong about this, but I believe earlier RPG's were largely text based or at least quite limited in their scope. This game let you explore an entire open world. I believe that is the element that makes it the grandfather of modern role playing games. And also the fact that most (all?) earlier games were mainframe hacks that were never released commercially. Regardless, this is one of the first even if it isn't the very first and it is what popularized the genre in computer games.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Google "pedit5" and "dnd"...both came before even that. Also, I think "Dungeon" did as well. "Rogue" was 1980 but is a pretty famous early one, which spawned a ton of "Roguelike" games. But, pedit5, from around 1974-1975, gifted us with the "capture the magic orb" thing that we still see in almost every RPG (and many non-RPGs).

However, timing isn't the only thing that makes something the "godfather" of a genre. The fact is, Gygax and Arneson released D&D in 1974 and it IMMEDIATELY spawned attempts to replicate it via computers (because RNG). If we really want to be honest about it, they could (and maybe should) be credited as the "godfathers" of the modern RPG game, video game or otherwise.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I should note that these early ones were done by hacking university systems haha, so pedit5 was deleted. I think "dnd" is the earliest one it's still possible to play and Wikipedia has that at 1975.

"Grandfather" probably refers to its influence more than whether or not it came first. But it could still be ignorance. Some people actually think Final Fantasy is the first RPG and Metal Gear is the first stealth game.

Hah.. from the pictures above it finally shows that HP/ H.P. is the abbreviations for Hit Points and NOT Health Points. I knew it was hit points fromD&D and my buddy always argued it was health points - we have argued over that for years.

Now I am gonna go brag to all the Ladys I know and impress the panties off them with my knowledge of vintage gaming, ::: straitens collar up ::: oh yeah baby.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Tell him 99% of gamers will say it's Hit Points. At least that would be my guess.

The history is what interests me here...although(yes I read the baggy part), I'd love to see some epic box-art here.

This would have been an exciting time for a bit of gaming....

<< LINK REMOVED >> Box Art ..? You mean Akalabeth written in perma marker (Sanford aluminum barrel marker) on a 5 1/4" floppy or a label maker sticker if lucky. (and not the fancy ones today but the hard red plastic with white letters).
