Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard has signed a deal with Universal to make a new movie called Hardcore that's based on a comic from The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman. This is just the latest big project for Windgard, as he's also attached to direct a new Thundercats movie, another MonsterVerse film from the Godzilla vs. Kong universe, and the Face/Off sequel.

As for Hardcore, Kirkman wrote an outline for the story, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Wingard, however, will write the screenplay with Will Simmon (Sleepy Hollow, Internal Affairs reboots).

The Hardcore comic is a sci-fi story about a soldier, Agent Drake, who has the power to take over the body of anyone on earth. "But when he gets stranded in a body with only 72 hours to discover who's hijacked the Program, he'll have to pull out all the stops against an enemy who could be literally anyone," reads a line from its description.

It appears to be very early days for the Hardcore film. There is no word yet on a cast or release date.

Godzilla vs. Kong made more than $430 million worldwide at the box office, despite the heavily impacted movie market due to the pandemic. The film was also released day one through HBO Max.

Wingard says he would love to make a Godzilla vs. Kong sequel, and one of his ideas would be to further explore Hollow Earth.

"I would absolutely love to continue. The clear starting point we teed up, exploring Hollow Earth, I think there is a lot more to do there," he said. "This is a pre-history of Planet Earth, where all the titans come from. We tee up some mystery in this film, things I want to see resolved and explored and pushed to the next level. If I have the opportunity, I know what I will do. It's up to Warner Bros and Legendary, if they have an appetite."
