Godfall PS5 Gameplay Info: Weapon Classes, Cooperative Play, Special Attacks, No Microtransactions, And More

PlayStation's State of Play stream featured an in-depth look at Godfall, the upcoming looter-slasher action game from Gearbox.

The third-person "looter-slasher" Godfall was featured during Sony's recent State of Play, and we got an in-depth look at many of the game's systems. This was accompanied by PS5 footage that showed the game in action. Game director Keith Lee outlined gameplay details, and specifically how the weapon class system works. They weren't all covered in detail, but we got a look at a few of the weapons and the attacks you'll be able to pull off as you take on the game's many enemies and bosses.

Lee reiterated that there will be no microtransactions in Godfall and that the game features co-op with up to two other players. The game is both gear-driven and skill-based, and has an armor upgrade system that revolves around what are called Valor Plates. If you've played games like Destiny 2 before, you should have an idea of what to expect. Of course, you'll be using melee instead of guns.

The State of Play presentation had specifics on how the weapons system works in Godfall, which centers around five weapon types: Longswords, Dual Blades, Polearms, two-handed Warhammers, and two-handed Greatswords. Each type of weapon represents a class that has its own set of skills and abilities that cater to a certain playstyle. The in-depth details focused on Dual Blades and Longswords, which you can catch in the video above.

Regardless of weapon, Godfall is said to emphasize offense and aggressive play. Consistent with that design philosophy is that across the different classes, a shield will be important and available to all. They're not just for defense, either--shields have their own unique skillset, with abilities like a wave attack, a Captain America-style throwing move, and an area-of-effect ground pound.

Lee mentioned that further details will come at later date, specifically covering the progression system and the rest of the weapon classes. Godfall is set to launch during Holiday 2020 as PlayStation 5 console exclusive and on PC. You can read our Godfall early review impressions now.

I said it few times while ago...dont use this game as an argument for the PS5!
This game got an undeserved attention coz it is a console exclusive to PS5,thats all.

Is there anyone actually excited for this? They've hyped this up as a launch title, but next to games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Outriders, the new Assassin's Creed, and Death Loop, this just looks generic and boring.

So what's someone using a 2 handed weapon supposed to do with a shield? Strap it to their back for protection against backstabs?

@Atzenkiller: Have you ever played Phantasy Star Online I+II?

If not,the characters could use a shotgun,double blades,two handed swords,dual rifles...all that combined with a traditional shield(most popular Standstill Shield or the Tripolic Shield for mages).

The shield was attached on the left hand,so the character didnt needed to "hold" the shield since it was attached at the arm. The hand was free to hold a weapon.

If the character was able to block an attack(depending on def and evasion stats),it raised automatically the shield to protect.

Ok,thats how it worked in PS Online back then just as an example that it can function.

For this game i need to see more of the gameplay

@sladakrobot: Dude, you gotta be kidding me. There never was a shield that you would use actively in the original PSO games. I know because I've played them a lot. It was just a piece of armor. Nothing more. And I think only some of the rarest armor items actually had any visible effects at all. Most didn't show any effect at all as armor in general wasn't visible. You could only get some effects like a burning aura around your character.

Compare that to the Dark Souls series, where you can equip a shield in either hand or even use it with both hands if you want. If you have a shield equipped and choose to wield the weapon in one of your hands with 2 hands, then the shield goes to your back. For obvious reasons since you can't really use a shield while using a greatsword. Effectively or at all. I don't remember ever seeing anyone trying to do so in any game and the Souls games don't allow it. So like I said, if you're using a 2 handed weapon then all a shield is good for is to strap it to your back to help avoid critical damage from backstabs.

@Atzenkiller: did you even read my comment to the end?
i NEVER said you could use the shield in PSO manually...i said the character would use it automatically if the criteria is met.
Further,what does the invisibility of "barriers" and "s-parts" to do with how "visible" shield worked?
why do you go away from shields to armors?
armors are seperate and shileds are seperate!
Further,even the most shields(and rings for that matter) was invisible,their effect(you see different sort of flashes depending of what you wear) was visible while blocking an attack.
so,that is enough of reminding you of PSO!
i am personally glad you liked PSO (i still play it on my Game Cube)...just go back to it and fresh your memories up.

@m4a5: Did you read what I said? How does a person that is carrying around a 2 handed weapon use a shield at the same time? I've never seen a game where you could do so. The only exception would be some skill that allows 2 handed weapons to be carried in one arm, turning them into 1 handed weapons. But whatever. You clearly didn't read a thing I said yet for some reason responded to something else anyway.

It just doesn’t look good. It looks generic as hell. I don’t see why there’s hype behind this. I’m gonna call it right now. I think it’s gonna be a 6. Of course I could be wrong. I’ve been wrong before, but I’ve been right far more times.

It's 2020 and the quality of your videos is terrible. They look as if they come from 1999. If you can host them yourself why not use youtube or whatever. Everything else will be better than what you have right now.

Looks way too slow paced for a loot game. I would need to see some end game action to see how this game going to be. I mean if you showed the first 10 mins gameplay of diablo 3 or PoE it would look slow and boring too.
