Now Playing: God Of War Video Review

Sony's PS4 exclusive action game God of War has won yet another Game of the Year award. Tonight at the Game Developers Choice Awards, Sony's PS4 game went home with the top prize. This is just the latest win for God of War, as it also won Game of the Year at December's The Game Awards and in February at the DICE Awards.

Other winners tonight included Celeste for Best Audio, Into the Breach for Best Design, and Red Dead Redemption 2 for Best Technology. Australian developer Mountains won Best Debut for Florence; that game also Best Mobile Game. Amy Hennig, an industry veteran who directed Uncharted, took home the Lifetime Achievement Award.

You can see a full rundown of the categories and winners at the bottom of this post.

"The Game Developers Choice Awards represent the most refined games of the year, and the sheer variety of games honored tonight showed that games can still represent wholly new and unique creative visions," GDC general manager Katie Stern said in a statement.

"A number of independently developed titles like Celeste, Gris, and Florence helped prove how internal or deeply personal turmoil can make for massively appealing games for millions of fans. While games like God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2 capture our imagination with poignant moments juxtaposed against epic tales of staggering scale and technical prowess. We embrace and accept all these amazingly creative works, and we're proud to recognize these nominees and winners alike for the imagination and hard work that brought them here."

Also at GDC this week, Google announced its new game-streaming technology, Stadia, which is set to launch later this year. Former Microsoft and Sony executive Phil Harrison is heading up the Stadia team, and he believes latency won't be an issue.

GDC 2019 continues all week, leading directly into PAX East in Boston at the weekend, so keep checking back with GameSpot for lots more.

The only thing more disturbing than Red Dead Redemption 2 not winning game of the year...was the DISGUSTING socialist bias of this GDC. I have no idea what is going on...but it made me feel truly ashamed for our industry.

I loved this game. I can't fault it. And I had low expectations going in because I hated Kratos. I was all GoWed out. But it didn't put a foot wrong.

I did not like RDR2. The game is full of problems that I don't know how reviewers managed to overlook.

Credit definitely goes to Breach for "design elegance..." If you come at it like most tactical strategy games, you'll get smoked. It's meant to be played like chess, not like a 4X or Advance Wars. (...yet it LOOKS like Advance Wars)

Getting both do not care if GOW won I just love to play good quality games. The way I see it people will still buy GOW as well as R2RD2.

For a person who played a LOT of GoW and RDR2 and loves BOTH games...RDR2 is the game that deserves the win.
That is the opinion of a person who plays games for 25+ years now on dozens of consoles, PC's and mobile devices.

@benji2d: I really have no clue how you can even say that about RDR2. It was just so bad I could not finish it. One of the only games I stopped playing because I just couldn't take it anymore. And I loved the first one so much..

@chubby170: Troll detected. I think the main issue with Red Dead 2, is that it just goes above most people's heads. It's the first mainstream piece of art from the gaming industry that actually stands up against the powerhouse movies and novels of the last 100 years. It elevates gaming from a child's hobby to an actual artform that can contend with the best.

@benji2d: For me personally I enjoyed GOW more but that's my own gaming preferences. RDR2 just couldn't keep my attention and I had a feeling that would end up happening going into it. I plan on eventually going back to RDR2 to finish the game as there is plenty to like and enjoy about the game but the slow moments and missions took me out of it. With GOW I was always engaged with what was happening whether it was a gameplay moment or a cinematic scene.

@benji2d: I have to agree with you. I'm on my second playthrough right now and it's even better than my first. I definitely feel it's the undisputed best game released in 2018. I still can't believe what they were able to do on a visual scale on base PS4 hardware. You can literally see for miles from a high vantage point in vivid detail. The story was also really well written and kept things interesting until the end.

Absolutely my favorite AAA game of last year. Stellar production values, worthy challenge, plus Dark Souls-style controls FTW.

Oxygen Not Included took the cake for total #hours, though.

@Pyrosa: . The challenge really increases too on new game+ on the hardest difficulty (at least I think I'm playing on the hardest level). Been getting my ass kicked since I switched over. Must of got a little too comfortable being a higher level and having my armors and weapons well upgraded.

Finally replaying it again on the highest difficulty and, yes, it's a very good game. It's a bit unbalanced in the beginning, but it really becomes enjoyable once you get your canoe.

Avatar image for sparent180
SParent180

@srfilk86: are you playing on new game+? After my first play through I felt the game was challenging but not too difficult once I got use to the controls, enemies, and upgraded Kratos's weapons and armor. But new game+ on the hardest difficulty takes it to another level.

@sparent180: Nope. I'm in NG. But I'll probably give up soon simply because Sekiro is out at 11PM tonight.

I think I’m going to finally find my fun in red dead redemption 2, I’m going to delete it off the hard drive and re-install god of war and get the platinum!

Avatar image for SythisTaru

@fatsnoopy: I couldn't even finish God of War. Played about 20 hours. Red Dead on the otherhand? Currently at 930 hours.

God of War was a very good game; certainly far better than any of the previous games (sorta like the jump from Witcher 2 to Witcher 3).....very good game....not remotely in the same league as RDR2....not in story, not in vision, not in world creation.....Rockstar set the new benchmark for production quality with world-building that they may, arguably, have already held. Putting God of War in the same class, let alone above RDR2, is fanboy nonsense.

Avatar image for SythisTaru
SythisTaru

@Daelusca: Amen. I'm not saying God of War is bad...but to win GOTY? I just don't understand. I would probably put it at 3rd or 4th after Detroit: Become Human and Pillars of Eternity II.

Avatar image for chubby170
Chubby170

@Daelusca: And I completely disagree. RDR2 was just so bad. The story was horribly boring to the point I couldnt even keep playing it. The missions were drab and boring (stranger missions were the only good ones imo), hardly anything interesting to do in that big world besides hunt and fish, which arent going to keep your interests forever. The only thing that kept me into RDR2 were the graphics and exploring for a bit until i realized its a big empty world.

Its funny how peoples opinions differ so much on this topic. It seems RDR2 really was a "love it or hate it" type of scenario.

@Daelusca: I agree on RDR2's "better than Hollywood" production values. It's amazing to behold on XOX w/4K+HDR massive surround sound. Characters, acting, writing... so good.

But it's just not FUN. It's a chore, and the controls are abysmal and un-remappable. I stopped playing even before leaving the snow area.

Avatar image for SythisTaru

@Pyrosa: You should stop gaming. If you are literally calling the best controls in gaming 'bad' .... I don't even know what to say. I know you are trolling, but I can't help but getting angry.

Avatar image for gamingdevil800

@Daelusca: tbh you're acting like a fanboy. RDR2 is good yes but you're totally ignoring it's short comings for instance every mission needs to be approached in a linear fashion with no deviation from the mission objectives despite it being an open world game. For instance you can't kill such and such or approach a mission in a different way. This is the games major shortcoming and what separates it apart from RPG's.

Avatar image for Daelusca

@gamingdevil800: A fanboy of what exactly? I hate Rockstar.....well, hate might be too strong, but they are not in my top 5 developers, and that in spite of RDR being my fav game all-time....GTA is pure trash....and thematically I was not as impressed with RDR2 as they fall back on their play-the-evil-character narrative.....that said, despite my criticisms of Rockstar, RDR2 is simply an objectively far superior game....and criticizing it for linearity, when God of War is far, far more linear a game....good grief.

Avatar image for lostn

@Daelusca: I think you're misusing the word 'objective'.

Avatar image for Daelusca
Daelusca

@lostn: Ahhh, no.....objectively, the production quality of RDR2 was far superior to God of War...everything from the scope of the world, the detail of the environment and the characters, the voice acting.....those objective things are well out of the league of God of War......subjectivity is what this award was based on...entirely.

Avatar image for ConnorAztecHaye
ConnorAztecHaye

@gamingdevil800: Isn't that the same with God of War?

Linearity isn't necessarily a bad thing. Not all games need to be open ended.

Avatar image for lostn

@ConnorAztecHaye: GoW does not advertise itself as an open world game. You got what was promised.

Avatar image for gamingdevil800
gamingdevil800

@ConnorAztecHaye: Different type of game though. My point was that RDR 2 is an open world game but the mission structure is still as linear as a linear game.

Avatar image for cboye18

@Daelusca: Ehhh they're both good but not excellent. I'd argue that the predecessors of both franchises were better.

Avatar image for Daelusca
Daelusca

@cboye18: For God of War I would personally strongly disagree....this was the first one I thought wasn't a QTE button mashing mess.

For RDR I would 100% agree...RDR is my fav game all-time, RDR2 wouldn't crack the top 20.

Avatar image for SythisTaru

@Daelusca: LOL did you just call RDR better than RDR 2? WHAT?

Avatar image for Daelusca
Daelusca

@SythisTaru: Given context (2010 vs. 2018) I would absolutely contend that; both were the peak of production quality for their generation and I far-better enjoyed the story/ narrative of RDR to that of RDR2.

"RDR2 for best technology". Some of which have now been patched out of the game, like Ambient Occlusion.
