Now Playing: God Of War Video Review

The 22nd annual D.I.C.E. Awards have announced the full list of nominees for this year, and Sony's God of War leads the way with 12 total nominations, including a nod for overall Game of the Year. The other Game of the Year nominees are Red Dead Redemption 2, Into the Breach, Spider-Man, and Return of the Obra Dinn.

God of War already won the Game of the Year award at The Game Awards back in December. It is also nominated for a top writing award at the Writers Guild Awards.

Fifty-six games in all received nominations this year. As mentioned, God of War led the way with 12 nominations, while Spider-Man picked up 11. Red Dead Redemption 2 grabbed eight nominations, while Return of the Obra Dinn picked up six.

The winners will be announced during the awards ceremony in Las Vegas on February 13, starting at 8 PM PT / 11 PM ET. Also during the event, Halo boss Bonnie Ross will be honoured as this year's Hall of Fame recipient.

Last year, Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild took home the overall Game of the Year award at the D.I.C.E. Awards. The event has nothing to do with DICE, the developer of the Battlefield and Star Wars: Battlefront franchises. D.I.C.E. stands for Design, Innovate, Communicate, Entertain.

I’m currently playing God of War. How did this game get such high acclaim??! The dialog is pitiful, the world is boring, the crafting is obtuse and completely out of character with the type of game it has been shoved in, the NPCs are mostly irritating little squirts, and having Atreus with you is like trying to play through Skyrim with a massive ball-and-chain around your foot. The combat is embarrassingly bad.....extremely slow, inaccurate, and wooly. I am just shocked at how this game made its way into accolade.

@VakarianGirl: Speaking of Vakarian, just booted up Mass Effect 3 again for the first time in years. Still amazing.

Some of these are complete nonsense imo. "Art direction", "sound design", "orginal music". Who really cares about those ones? It's like a school sports day - everyone wins something, there can be no losers and no-one walks away empty-handed.

For me GOTY would be RDR2, though I would throw out a big hello and thank you to Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

@mpl911: nobody cares about art direction? that is arguably more important than "graphics"... are you really that ignorant?

@mpl911: Anyone who's played Alien Isolation will tell you how important sound design alone is. Music has always mattered, as has art. I must admit I was taken aback by your comment here. Also at my school there was never a "taking part" award - you were a loser if you came 4th, lol.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance though? Yeah that's a fucking great game, we can agree on that one.

@mpl911: Considering the organization’s acronym stands for “Design, Innovate, Communicate, Entertain,” I think they were founded to honor the smaller things you call “complete nonsense.”

Spider-man was my game of the year. Followed closely by God of War and Detroit: Become human.

Sure, I enjoyed God of War and recognize it's amazing evolution. But at the same time, I'd say its high time Red Dead Redemption 2 started being recognized for its achievements. I mean, in terms of content and the amazing countless possibilities that Rockstar managed to litter throughout the game is unreal. The game can be replayed countless times with different outcomes and experiences. That, alone, makes it Game of the Year for me and I hope at least DICE will give the amazing accomplishments it has pulled off the recognition and reward it deserves!!

Two games that don't deserve the credit they've received.
