God Of War PS4 Review Roundup [Updated]: Here's What Critics Are Saying

Turns out you can teach an old God new tricks.

Ever since God of War was revealed for PS4, it's been clear the game would differ from its predecessors in the series. It appeared to be slower, with more of an emphasis on character development and very different combat. The game has also learned a lot from fellow PS4 exclusive The Last of Us.

Now, with God of War's release date drawing ever closer, reviews have gone live for the next big PS4 game, and it seems critics are impressed. In our God of War review, Peter Brown awarded the action-adventure title a 9/10, saying it's a "spectacular action game with epic set pieces, big-budget production values, and hard-hitting combat." For more on what critics thought, check out our review roundup below, or head over to Metacritic for a wider view of the game's critical reception.

GameSpot -- 9/10

"In many ways God of War is what the series has always been. It's a spectacular action game with epic set pieces, big-budget production values, and hard-hitting combat that grows more feverish and impressive as you progress. What may surprise you is how mature its storytelling has become. Like Kratos, God of War recalls the past while acknowledging the need to improve. Everything new it does is for the better, and everything it holds onto benefits as a result. Kratos is no longer a predictable brute. God of War is no longer an old-fashioned action series. With this reboot, it confidently walks a new path that will hopefully lead to more exciting adventures to come." -- Peter Brown [Full review]

IGN -- 10/10

"I expected great action from God of War, and it delivers that handily. But I didn't expect it to be a thrilling journey in which every aspect of it complements the others to form what is nothing short of a masterpiece. It’s a game in which Kratos, a previously one-note character, becomes a complex father, warrior, and monster, embattled both on the field and within his own heart about how to treat his son; one in which the world opens up and shifts, offering rewards in both gameplay and knowledge of its lore that I treasured with each accomplishment. The obvious care that went into crafting its world, characters, and gameplay delivers by far the most stirring and memorable game in the series." -- Jonathon Dornbush [Full review]

GamesRadar+ -- 5/5

"I don't think it’s possible to overstate just how good God of War is; how well realised its world, how nuanced and layered its characters and storytelling. The depth and craft of its combat, puzzles and almost every system it has sparkles and shines with an indulgence and luxury that regularly stopped me in my tracks to drink it all in. Whether breathless and bloody in the aftermath of an axe-hacked victory, or watching Kratos and his son Atreus share a genuinely human moment, this is a level of game making that doesn't happen often. The final question really isn't about where it sits in any game of the year discussions, but rather its place in eventual game of the generation talks." -- Leon Hurley [Full review]

The Guardian -- 5/5

"It is rare to play a game so accomplished in everything it sets out to do. God of War is a standard-setter both technologically and narratively. It is a game that, until recently, would have been impossible." -- Keza MacDonald [Full review]

Game Informer -- 9.75/10

"Years ago, Kratos killed the deities of Mount Olympus in a gory rampage. Now, in the Norse realm, he has remade himself into a different kind of god. He is quieter and more deliberate, affected by his history but not constrained by it. Kratos' reinvention serves as a narrative hook, but it also parallels the series’ evolution as a whole; where God of War once relied on bombast and bloodlust, now it leaves space for strategy and nuance. It still has superb action and plenty of jaw-dropping moments, but it supports them with a new level of depth and maturity. God of War learns from its past while clearing an exciting path for the future, and emerges as one of the best games of this generation." -- Joe Juba [Full review]

Variety -- No Score

"Kratos remains capable of startling violence. But there is a sense that even Sony Santa Monica has recoiled from some of 'God of War's' legacy, and the game is better for it. It is a game that treats its history with respect where appropriate, but without obligation, even in its very concluding moments. This new God of War has some rough edges remaining in its transition to something new, but even in its concluding moments, it commits to its vision in a way that few games do--and it's the first time the series has felt vibrant and important in a decade." -- Arthur Gies [Full review]

Polygon -- 10/10

"A decade ago, director Cory Barlog helped establish the God of War franchise as an iconic gory and debaucherous video game romp. While its antihero, Kratos, had pathos (he killed his wife and daughter in a fit of rage, his skin forever grayed by their ashes), it served little dramatic purpose, rather existing as a grimdark excuse for his god-slaying and orgy-having ways. Barlog--now older, a father--has returned to the series with a bundle of talented designers, many of whom served on the earlier games, to make good on that rich but neglected potential at its core. There's still plenty of gore, but the now the guts have meatiness." -- Chris Plante [Full review]

Eurogamer -- Recommended

"Like Kratos, the god of fury who must learn not to fear his son, this is a strange beast, really. The latest technology and astonishing craft and artistry are employed to deliver a game of extremely simple pleasures--a wash of new pseudo-ideas that cannot hide the fact that the basics remain unfixed because they were not broken. God of War dresses things up, in other words, but it is ultimately the same deal it always was. As is the way with myths, I guess. As is the way with gods." -- Christian Donlan [Full review]

Legit question, while I know sites like MetaCritic and GameRankings (owned by GameSpot) corral reviews, does anyone else find it distasteful for competing websites to post reviews and conclusions from their rivals and even posting their scores? I mean, at the very least, have the decency to not post their official score, add a link for that. But to giveaway, a competitor's score seems a little unethical. You're basically stealing clicks and traffic from them, despite the hard work they have put into reviewing the same game.

@mwewerka: Unethical?? They're publishing direct links (click on "full review") to their competitors, nothing unethical about it. If anything it's free advertising for gamespots rivals. I actually think it's a very decent thing of them to do.

*EDIT, have just seen this has already been addressed further down the comments.

@mwewerka: While it is a tact to draw users to their site instead of others, it's also a user-friendly article as it provides multiple opinions to choose from. The only problem I have seen is when the person writing the roundup cherry picks other reviews that support gamespots opinion, rather than simply grabbing the same 5 or 6 sites every time.

@suicidesn0wman: True, but again, at the very least, they could withhold the scores of others. Perhaps leaving a paragraph and gist, but leave the score hidden so at least it may provoke readers to click and see the other's full review. By going their current route, they leave no reason to visit the other website's review.

@mwewerka: While I can see your point, I actually look at it from a slightly different perspective. By posting reviews from other sites, they are giving their opinions more weight. Basically it’s like showing them respect as a trusted voice in the gaming industry. It would be pretty cool if they posted links to the reviews, but I don’t see that happening.

@The_Inebriator: I see your point as well. But it's also like justifying when a homeless man steals a hotdog from a vendor because he's hungry and says thanks, while also running down the street saying it's the best hot dog he's ever eaten. Sure, he's hungry and he did say thank you and gave the guy "FREE" publicity, but in the end, he still just stole a hotdog from the person who took the time to make it, and ultimately just did it for himself.

No matter how you break it down and try to justify it, you're stealing content and traffic, and thus, revenue.

@mwewerka: hmm.. i never considered that. i wonder if the various outlets (ign, etc) have to give their permission or not? in either case, you cannot overlook the traffic that meta and game rankings will bring to the hosting site as well. in the end, i would assume it works out for everyone involved in some capacity.

God of War(2018) : this game's ultimate and should be 10/10 but it's not on NINTENDO's hardware so GS got it only 9 ,like Horizon and Shadow of the Colossus.

Monster Hunter World's very gorgeous game and should be at least 9/10 but it's not on NINTENDO's hardware so GS got it only 8!!!!!!!!!

WTF WTF WTF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure about IGN'S 10/10 but a mid nines is about right. Either way it looks to be another excellent Sony exclusive. Even more embarrassing for Microsoft who can only offer more bc games!

@mal123456: as an owner of both consoles I really hope Microsoft/Xbox steps their game up at E3. The lack of quality exclusives has really hurt the XboxOne for me. The BC games are cool but I didn't buy an XboxOne to replay games from previous gens and I'm not going to invest in an XboxOneX just for the visual boost.

@mal123456: Now you know why Microsoft dropped the OGX BC the other day. They knew God of War was going to be a masterpiece and they have zero 0 exclusives to answer such a tremendous title. They have been working on BC for this reason alone.

Sony exclusives are so rare it almost makes you forget there's even a reason to power on the PS4. But when they hit, they hit hard and make the gaming industry take notice, reminding everyone just exactly why they hold on to their consoles.

@khanwashere: Rare? What planet are you from? If you want to bring up a console with scarce exclusives, Microsoft has been doing a fantastic job of screwing over loyal XBOX ONE owners for quite a while.

@khanwashere:there are just as many if not more notable sony exclusives on ps4 than there were on ps3 and we still have last of us 2, days gone and ghost of tsushima before it is all said and done (that only includes 1st party and not the myriad of other exclusives such as detroit, death stranding and more). i don't think it makes sense to call them "rare". i mean, how many would there need to be to satisfy you? this year alone there are at least half a dozen big exclusives -- shadow of the colossus, god of war, yakuza 6, detroit and spiderman off the top of my head.

@Xristophoros: can people stop ignoring Dreams? That game is going to be huge huge huge. People are going to be blown away at what creative art geniuses such as myself will create when collaborating with other professional musicians and writers.

@garysan: Dreams is cool but it's going to take some time for that game to truly shine. Ton of potential but, for me atleast, it's going to be a game I hold off on until I can see the full breadth of what people are able to create with the game.

I also don't have much confidence in my own creativity to fully appreciate and enjoy the creation process of the game (would love to be wrong about this).

@garysan: its because people can't conceptualize the game in their imaginations; its a hands on game that talented people need to get their hands on first to show what people can do and what can be done.

@Ravenlore_basic: hopefully the next time it is shown off (E3?) Sony can do a better job demonstrating and displaying what is possible with the game. Show off some of the creative process within the game and then some finished products of what is possible.

It sounds like a game that has the potential to really blow people away with it's possibilities but, like you said, it is hard to fully conceptualize at this point.

@garysan: still no firm release date for dreams which is very troubling. i think sony is ignoring dreams more than anyone else lol... if it does release this year, it will need to launch prior to september otherwise it will get lost completely. if it is mentioned at e3, will sony give it a release in july or august? who knows... i have a feeling it will be delayed until early 2019. i agree that the user creation tools in dreams are incredible...

@Xristophoros: after No Man's sky debacle, I hope Sony does not rush this game and supports it. I now enjoy NMS after the updates but if it launched with what it does now then it would not have been a debacle.

@ice12tray: I'd love for Last of Us 2 to drop this year but I dont think so will release that many exclusives in just one year. They already have God of War, Detroit, Yakuza 6, and Spiderman coming this year (might be forgetting others). That's not even counting big multiplatform titles like Far Cry 5(already released), Red Dead 2, new COD, possibly the new Metro, and I'm sure plenty of others.

That's a lot of games and competition to deal with. I'd expect Sony to wait for early 2019 when there is less competition (much like what happened with uncharted 4, horizon, and now God of War).

If Last of Us 2 does release this year it could be a sign that the PS5 is on the way sooner than later.

@ice12tray: yea, i think so too. i wasn't the biggest fan of red dead, due to the pacing issues and repetitive nature of the game design. i'll see if they made improvements in those areas... if not, i think gow could be my goty. last of us 2 dropping this year would be insane but i highly doubt it.

@CrusaderForever: MHW does not deserve to be a contender in my opinion. While the game is fun, Other than a graphical update with few new maps, it was lazily developed by Capcom. If MHW deserve to be GOTY, then so does every other MH because they had so much more content and plays almost exactly the same.

With the fact Cory Barlog was back on board and the game getting reviewed a week in advance as opposed to the same day of release that other releases fall on, this had to be good. I have been looking forward to this from the first day when it was shown at E3 2016 and I have been excited ever since. Next Friday can't come soon enough for me!
