God Of War PS4 Review Roundup [Updated]: Here's What Critics Are Saying

Turns out you can teach an old God new tricks.

Ever since God of War was revealed for PS4, it's been clear the game would differ from its predecessors in the series. It appeared to be slower, with more of an emphasis on character development and very different combat. The game has also learned a lot from fellow PS4 exclusive The Last of Us.

Now, with God of War's release date drawing ever closer, reviews have gone live for the next big PS4 game, and it seems critics are impressed. In our God of War review, Peter Brown awarded the action-adventure title a 9/10, saying it's a "spectacular action game with epic set pieces, big-budget production values, and hard-hitting combat." For more on what critics thought, check out our review roundup below, or head over to Metacritic for a wider view of the game's critical reception.

GameSpot -- 9/10

"In many ways God of War is what the series has always been. It's a spectacular action game with epic set pieces, big-budget production values, and hard-hitting combat that grows more feverish and impressive as you progress. What may surprise you is how mature its storytelling has become. Like Kratos, God of War recalls the past while acknowledging the need to improve. Everything new it does is for the better, and everything it holds onto benefits as a result. Kratos is no longer a predictable brute. God of War is no longer an old-fashioned action series. With this reboot, it confidently walks a new path that will hopefully lead to more exciting adventures to come." -- Peter Brown [Full review]

IGN -- 10/10

"I expected great action from God of War, and it delivers that handily. But I didn't expect it to be a thrilling journey in which every aspect of it complements the others to form what is nothing short of a masterpiece. It’s a game in which Kratos, a previously one-note character, becomes a complex father, warrior, and monster, embattled both on the field and within his own heart about how to treat his son; one in which the world opens up and shifts, offering rewards in both gameplay and knowledge of its lore that I treasured with each accomplishment. The obvious care that went into crafting its world, characters, and gameplay delivers by far the most stirring and memorable game in the series." -- Jonathon Dornbush [Full review]

GamesRadar+ -- 5/5

"I don't think it’s possible to overstate just how good God of War is; how well realised its world, how nuanced and layered its characters and storytelling. The depth and craft of its combat, puzzles and almost every system it has sparkles and shines with an indulgence and luxury that regularly stopped me in my tracks to drink it all in. Whether breathless and bloody in the aftermath of an axe-hacked victory, or watching Kratos and his son Atreus share a genuinely human moment, this is a level of game making that doesn't happen often. The final question really isn't about where it sits in any game of the year discussions, but rather its place in eventual game of the generation talks." -- Leon Hurley [Full review]

The Guardian -- 5/5

"It is rare to play a game so accomplished in everything it sets out to do. God of War is a standard-setter both technologically and narratively. It is a game that, until recently, would have been impossible." -- Keza MacDonald [Full review]

Game Informer -- 9.75/10

"Years ago, Kratos killed the deities of Mount Olympus in a gory rampage. Now, in the Norse realm, he has remade himself into a different kind of god. He is quieter and more deliberate, affected by his history but not constrained by it. Kratos' reinvention serves as a narrative hook, but it also parallels the series’ evolution as a whole; where God of War once relied on bombast and bloodlust, now it leaves space for strategy and nuance. It still has superb action and plenty of jaw-dropping moments, but it supports them with a new level of depth and maturity. God of War learns from its past while clearing an exciting path for the future, and emerges as one of the best games of this generation." -- Joe Juba [Full review]

Variety -- No Score

"Kratos remains capable of startling violence. But there is a sense that even Sony Santa Monica has recoiled from some of 'God of War's' legacy, and the game is better for it. It is a game that treats its history with respect where appropriate, but without obligation, even in its very concluding moments. This new God of War has some rough edges remaining in its transition to something new, but even in its concluding moments, it commits to its vision in a way that few games do--and it's the first time the series has felt vibrant and important in a decade." -- Arthur Gies [Full review]

Polygon -- 10/10

"A decade ago, director Cory Barlog helped establish the God of War franchise as an iconic gory and debaucherous video game romp. While its antihero, Kratos, had pathos (he killed his wife and daughter in a fit of rage, his skin forever grayed by their ashes), it served little dramatic purpose, rather existing as a grimdark excuse for his god-slaying and orgy-having ways. Barlog--now older, a father--has returned to the series with a bundle of talented designers, many of whom served on the earlier games, to make good on that rich but neglected potential at its core. There's still plenty of gore, but the now the guts have meatiness." -- Chris Plante [Full review]

Eurogamer -- Recommended

"Like Kratos, the god of fury who must learn not to fear his son, this is a strange beast, really. The latest technology and astonishing craft and artistry are employed to deliver a game of extremely simple pleasures--a wash of new pseudo-ideas that cannot hide the fact that the basics remain unfixed because they were not broken. God of War dresses things up, in other words, but it is ultimately the same deal it always was. As is the way with myths, I guess. As is the way with gods." -- Christian Donlan [Full review]

I don't mean to keep piling on, but it keeps being true. Sony bangs out another top-rated exclusive title and Microsoft's highly anticipated Sea of Thieves seems like a bit of a flop.

Believe me ladies and gentlemen, if it were the other way around I'd be saying so but time and time again, the exclusives battle demonstrates which console is the better one to own if you have to choose for, say, monetary reasons.

Still, these things can be cyclical. Perhaps with the Xbox Two (or whatever it ends up being called) the situation will reverse itself again.

@BeefoTheBold: Cyclical indeed. 360 was king last gen, and Microsoft got comfortable which led to the disastrous XB1 launch they're still paying for to this day. Same could be said to an extent for the PS3 launch after the incredible success of the PS2. If history repeats itself then Microsoft may have their comeback next gen.

Phil Spencer has done a lot for the XBox brand, and I give him credit, but every time he patches the metaphorical plumbing of XBox a leak springs somewhere else. That being said, Microsoft is well aware of its issues and they definitely have some exclusives in the oven. Problem is, average dev time for a AAA game is around 3 years so their plates are likely gonna be empty for a little longer. I wish success for all 3 platforms, as competition is nothing but good for gamers.

@jesterofbass: uh last time I checked the Wii outsold 360 and PS4 By a large margin and PS3 also outsold the 360 by a small number but it still beat 360 So I don’t know where you are getting this 360 was the king last gen. Btw go check the sales numbers.

@skot_free: Balls. Totally forgot the Wii. Okay you got me there. Should've clarified "Microsoft VS Sony" considering the Wii literally ran away with that entire generation. By a lot.

Wii had a LOT of shovelware though, mostly due to the huge install base of "casuals". I know dozens of people that aren't even gamers, but they own a Wii cause it was cheap and had motion controls. In most cases the novelty wore off quick, and those Wii's either wound up in the corner of the entertainment center collecting dust, or packed up in a closet. I wouldn't be surprised if a large margin of Wii owners bought less than 5 games for the entire console generation. Hardware sales are great and all, but I wouldn't count on all 100+ million owners having a big catalog of software. So they may have been "king" when it came to units out the door, but as far as active players/people with significant game collections? I'd wager both Sony and Microsoft have the Wii beat.

As far as 360 VS PS3, I suppose it depends on your source.

According to mine, the difference between 360 and PS3 sales is much more trivial than I thought.

Xbox 360Microsoft200584 million
PlayStation 3Sony200683.8 millionGT

The 360 seemed so much more popular than the PS3 (which it was, at least in the beginning when Sony botched the launch) but I guess it caught up far more than I realized.

EDIT: I put way too much effort into this rambling response.......lmao

I like gaming discussions ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@skot_free: I don't think sale numbers alone crown a system. Ps3 and Xbox 360 had more enjoyable games (to me) than the Wii. I personally found Xbox 360's online network was better, as well as cross platform games ran and looked better on the 360. I enjoyed my Ps3, but definitely played a lot more Xbox 360 than my Ps3 and Wii combined. The fact Ps3 couldn't do party chat was a bummer too.

@laf13: That much is true. I don't view that as a bad thing though. Play Anywhere is awesome and I've utilized it on several occasions to play co-op (me on my PC and my friend on his XBox). You could argue that this negates the need for XBox at all, but there are other reasons people buy consoles (convenience, cost, reassurance of compatibility, etc). I love my gaming PC but it has definitely given me its share of compatibility issues and headaches that I never would've dealt with on a console.

@BeefoTheBold: Xbox is getting Horizon this year.... Forza Horizon that is.

And if Phil is to be believed, there won't be an Xbox Two. The X is the end of generations. They will take the cell phone model of iterative refreshes. Which means their console will forever be chained to the same architecture and controller, and they won't be able to introduce a new peripheral because it will fail since not everyone will have one, and devs won't bother supporting it.

@BeefoTheBold: I was a little worry about the addition of the kid and how different the gameplay is than the old games with Krato' no longer having old trusty weapon and having instead an Axe and how it would impact the gameplay with those changes so i'm surprise of how high it is, i thought that this game may not score as high as previous games before with the changes that were made. Sea of thieves flop in the Rating department but as of right now the game is selling well so people are not really worry about the low ratings for that game right now

@jesterofbass: I didn't pay a penny my self for that game and i didn't pay a penny for my Xbox Game Pass as well. i end up getting a 1 year Xbox Game Pass for nothing and i'm playing the game free with my Xbox Pass. The free Xbox Game pass through Bing Rewards from Microsoft but sadly bing Rewards no longer offer the 1 Year subscription now they only offer 1 and 3 months subscription with Bing rewards points. 1 month is ( 6,800 ) and 3 months is ( 17,000 ) points

Maybe compared to only Microsoft they are. Nearly half of Sony's 90+ Metacritic scores are from god of War games alone, so it is hardly a surprise in this case.

Nonetheless, glad to see PS4 owners getting another great exclusive. Perhaps I'll pick up a second hand PS4 eventually.

Really wish you'd go back to using points... Like 9.25 or 9.5 or 9.75. A whole point is a big difference. Yes, it's still a good score. But if it were a 7 instead or an 8, I'd be probably waiting instead of preordering.(Yes, I look at review scores before preordering). Fortunately there's your sister metacritic which seems to give a much more rounded out number. Minor complaint, just would be nice to have again and not sure why it was taken out.

@joshrmeyer: Yeah, but would you have said that if it were an 8.9 or an 8.7? The psychology says we actually put the emphasis on the first number rather than the decimal (and I think that's rather why they'd prefer to round it up).

It's either that or score out of 100 (as per Metacritic as you say, although I'd hardly refer to Metacritic as 'rounded'...)

@TwinStripeUK: I'd say they are both 8's, and they'd be rounded up to a 9. This game could have been anywhere between 8.5-9.4 for the reviewer to give it a 9. That's a pretty big difference.

@joshrmeyer: Very true. For a game this big, I don't read the review. I'll skim, but want as little actual game info as possible. I already have an idea of how it works, and I want to go in fresh. I'm just curious what's the overall consensus of the entire package. After I've played, I may go back and read, but I also understand the score is just an opinion.
