God Of War PS4 Review Roundup [Updated]: Here's What Critics Are Saying

Turns out you can teach an old God new tricks.

Ever since God of War was revealed for PS4, it's been clear the game would differ from its predecessors in the series. It appeared to be slower, with more of an emphasis on character development and very different combat. The game has also learned a lot from fellow PS4 exclusive The Last of Us.

Now, with God of War's release date drawing ever closer, reviews have gone live for the next big PS4 game, and it seems critics are impressed. In our God of War review, Peter Brown awarded the action-adventure title a 9/10, saying it's a "spectacular action game with epic set pieces, big-budget production values, and hard-hitting combat." For more on what critics thought, check out our review roundup below, or head over to Metacritic for a wider view of the game's critical reception.

GameSpot -- 9/10

"In many ways God of War is what the series has always been. It's a spectacular action game with epic set pieces, big-budget production values, and hard-hitting combat that grows more feverish and impressive as you progress. What may surprise you is how mature its storytelling has become. Like Kratos, God of War recalls the past while acknowledging the need to improve. Everything new it does is for the better, and everything it holds onto benefits as a result. Kratos is no longer a predictable brute. God of War is no longer an old-fashioned action series. With this reboot, it confidently walks a new path that will hopefully lead to more exciting adventures to come." -- Peter Brown [Full review]

IGN -- 10/10

"I expected great action from God of War, and it delivers that handily. But I didn't expect it to be a thrilling journey in which every aspect of it complements the others to form what is nothing short of a masterpiece. It’s a game in which Kratos, a previously one-note character, becomes a complex father, warrior, and monster, embattled both on the field and within his own heart about how to treat his son; one in which the world opens up and shifts, offering rewards in both gameplay and knowledge of its lore that I treasured with each accomplishment. The obvious care that went into crafting its world, characters, and gameplay delivers by far the most stirring and memorable game in the series." -- Jonathon Dornbush [Full review]

GamesRadar+ -- 5/5

"I don't think it’s possible to overstate just how good God of War is; how well realised its world, how nuanced and layered its characters and storytelling. The depth and craft of its combat, puzzles and almost every system it has sparkles and shines with an indulgence and luxury that regularly stopped me in my tracks to drink it all in. Whether breathless and bloody in the aftermath of an axe-hacked victory, or watching Kratos and his son Atreus share a genuinely human moment, this is a level of game making that doesn't happen often. The final question really isn't about where it sits in any game of the year discussions, but rather its place in eventual game of the generation talks." -- Leon Hurley [Full review]

The Guardian -- 5/5

"It is rare to play a game so accomplished in everything it sets out to do. God of War is a standard-setter both technologically and narratively. It is a game that, until recently, would have been impossible." -- Keza MacDonald [Full review]

Game Informer -- 9.75/10

"Years ago, Kratos killed the deities of Mount Olympus in a gory rampage. Now, in the Norse realm, he has remade himself into a different kind of god. He is quieter and more deliberate, affected by his history but not constrained by it. Kratos' reinvention serves as a narrative hook, but it also parallels the series’ evolution as a whole; where God of War once relied on bombast and bloodlust, now it leaves space for strategy and nuance. It still has superb action and plenty of jaw-dropping moments, but it supports them with a new level of depth and maturity. God of War learns from its past while clearing an exciting path for the future, and emerges as one of the best games of this generation." -- Joe Juba [Full review]

Variety -- No Score

"Kratos remains capable of startling violence. But there is a sense that even Sony Santa Monica has recoiled from some of 'God of War's' legacy, and the game is better for it. It is a game that treats its history with respect where appropriate, but without obligation, even in its very concluding moments. This new God of War has some rough edges remaining in its transition to something new, but even in its concluding moments, it commits to its vision in a way that few games do--and it's the first time the series has felt vibrant and important in a decade." -- Arthur Gies [Full review]

Polygon -- 10/10

"A decade ago, director Cory Barlog helped establish the God of War franchise as an iconic gory and debaucherous video game romp. While its antihero, Kratos, had pathos (he killed his wife and daughter in a fit of rage, his skin forever grayed by their ashes), it served little dramatic purpose, rather existing as a grimdark excuse for his god-slaying and orgy-having ways. Barlog--now older, a father--has returned to the series with a bundle of talented designers, many of whom served on the earlier games, to make good on that rich but neglected potential at its core. There's still plenty of gore, but the now the guts have meatiness." -- Chris Plante [Full review]

Eurogamer -- Recommended

"Like Kratos, the god of fury who must learn not to fear his son, this is a strange beast, really. The latest technology and astonishing craft and artistry are employed to deliver a game of extremely simple pleasures--a wash of new pseudo-ideas that cannot hide the fact that the basics remain unfixed because they were not broken. God of War dresses things up, in other words, but it is ultimately the same deal it always was. As is the way with myths, I guess. As is the way with gods." -- Christian Donlan [Full review]

How does a cinematic experience so visually and auditively unappealing get such high scores?

Listen, I've learned to tolerate games with cinematic or low-effort gameplay. I usually leave them alone now because the ones that get good ratings usually seem to present an engaging enough experience through their audiovisual presentation and story. But then you get this...

I mean, just look at it for a minute. Who really wants to play as some old grumpy bald guy with a long beard, constantly followed by an annoying and frankly ugly little boy?

Comparing TLOU to this game, Joel and Ellie were appealing characters visually and auditively, and so was the world they were in. I can watch a trailer from that game and I understand what's good about it. But then I watch a trailer for this game, and the kid's voice alone would be enough to make me not want to play it. And there's nothing that really grabs any of my attention. Visually, I don't even get what it's going for. Like if it's going for realism, why do the humans look so pale?

No seriously, they look like walking corpses. Are they all secretly vampires? Maybe there's an intricate story reason to it and it's a huge plot twist, and it blows your mind so you give it a 10 without thinking, but then later you'll look back at it, maybe play it a second time, and you'll realize that there wasn't actually anything that great about any of its design.

Well, except the "no camera cuts and no loadings" thing. That's fairly impressive, technology-wise.

@Tiwill44: sorry to see your disappointed. But the game is getting mostly 9-10's across the board and say the gameplay has more depth and better than previous titles. But with masterpieces like this, there will always be a minor party that thinks otherwise and that's understandable. I loved TLOU also.

@Tiwill44: That is some of the worst reasoning I've ever seen on GameSpot. I'll use your argument against something else and see what you think:

Who wants read about or watch three films about an ancient wizard who is adorned in the most unappealing coloured garb (grey) and a bunch of child-like characters who are occasionally joined by other characters in a journey to dispose of a ring? Nearly all of the enemies are brown or green and seem very unrealistic.

Suspend belief, It's a game based on mythology (Greek and Norse) and is never about realism.

@Tiwill44: Having so many clear-cut negative opinions after only seeing a few trailers is a clear indication that there's more to it than you just being skeptical towards the game, and probably has to do with some past frustrations regarding the franchise, sony, single player gaming, something...

PS: "Who really wants to play as some old grumpy bald guy with a long beard, constantly followed by an annoying and frankly ugly little boy?" Me, me, me, me!!!

@livedreamplay: If that was the case, then in the same way, having clear-cut positive opinions about a game after only seeing a few trailers would be a clear indication that you're blindly fanatical about the franchise or company making it. I'm just voicing my opinion, and no game should be immune to criticism.

@Tiwill44: how can you criticize something you haven’t played. You’re making a decision based on incomplete information. That’s like looking at a plate of food and declaring it taste bad based on a picture of the food. I used to hate guacamole because it was green, then I tasted it and now love it.

@Tiwill44: Exactly, the opposite works the same. So you understand that your frustration lays elsewhere since you have such clear-cut opinions about a game that you haven't played...

And indeed, no game should be immune to criticism, but the less basis you have for the critique, the less credibility you have. And since you're basing yours on some trailers, the credibility is close to zero. Hence why I'm saying that you're probably having more of a beef with sony, or the franchise, than the game itself...

@livedreamplay: But I don't think everyone saying positive things about this game despite not having played it is wrong in doing so. Just because I'm not riding the wave of excitement and anticipation for this game, doesn't mean I have 'frustration that lies elsewhere'.

@Tiwill44: It's one thing to be hyped and say "I think it looks great and I'll definitely give it a try", or to be skeptical and say "doesn't look interesting to me so I'll pass". But when you come with concise opinions that there's nothing to it other than the no-cut camera, when you haven't even played the game, that's when you know for sure it's more than just your healthy dose of skepticism, and that frustrations lie everywhere...

@livedreamplay: The main point I was trying to express was that, when looking at this game, it doesn't give me the impression that it should be considered one of the best games ever. Usually you can tell when watching a trailer, "this seems like one of the good ones", even if the game doesn't appeal to you. But what I've seen of this game is very average in every area. Like I said, the only thing that stands out to me is the fact that the camera never cuts.

I'm not claiming my opinion has the most weight; obviously I haven't played the game. But you don't need to play a game to have a feel for what it accomplishes. Especially a game like this one, since the entire point is that it conveys a cinematic experience. I was just not expecting a game that looks and sounds like this to get this much praise. You're free to disagree with my impressions of the game, of course.

@Tiwill44: The mistake you are making is that you are using a trailer to judge the entirety of the game. How many times in your life have you gone to see a movie based on viewing the trailer only to find the movie sucks? I have many times, and I’m sure you have too. So the opposite can be true in that even though you might not like the trailer, in experiencing the game, you may find you do like it, but it really seems you have made up your mind, and I don’t care enough to keep trying to convince you. Just wait for it to go on sale and kick yourself later like I did with The Last of us.

@Tiwill44: I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with what you say until I play the game. For example, I found the first two trailers from Detroit very poorly done in terms of both writing and acting. Either way, I'm not going to judge the acting/writing/game quality based on me not feeling those trailers, it would be a premature opinion. Just like yours.

Besides that, don't you have any reviewer that you trust? I have about four reviewers that I follow for which I noticed that they pretty much match my preferences. So if they all say God of War is very good, I'm inclined to believe it will be very good, even if I don't express a personal opinion yet.

@livedreamplay: Fair enough. And there are very few reviewers that I trust enough to overshadow my own impressions of a game, but I guess I tend to agree with what that Joseph Anderson guy has to say (not always). He takes his sweet time to review games tho so we won't get a review from him till months from now.

@dacontag: To be fair, I never fully understood the appeal of this franchise in the first place, so at least they're being consistently unappealing to me. But I still kinda understood it before even if it wasn't for me. It was over-the-top button mashing action. Seemed fine for what it was.

Now it's trying to be something else, but without any of the qualities of the title it's trying to imitate. I honestly expected a 75-85 at best on Metacritic for this game, purely based on the trailers.

@Tiwill44: you are here to complain about one of the highest rated games this generation. why bother, honestly? we know you love your kibry games... would it be impossible for you to show respect to something that just isn't for you?

god forbid a game was challenging, had impeccable art direction and graphics, an engaging story and characters and provided a fresh experience unlike any other game currently on the market.

@Xristophoros: Kirby man? I played the demo for Star Allies and felt dead inside, I'd give the game a 5 at best. If that game had gotten a 95 on Metacritic, you'd see me in the comments saying it's one the most uninspired games I've ever played, with poor design and no challenge or anything fun about it. It didn't tho, it got the scores it deserved.

I was critical about Odyssey despite liking the game overall because it was similarly overrated.

@Tiwill44: just gonna say your trailer argument is flawed by that regard we should assume star wars battlefront EA is an awesome game because the trailer was so true to life of star wars but look how that turned out . . . Also i can easily say i disliked the last of us trailers back in the day but man did i love that game =) my main point for buying it in the first place was because it was naughty dog who have yet to dissapoint me

It would be good to finally know my PS4 as more than just the Yakuza console. I have been anticipating Kratos' return. I just hope the music is as epic as in the first two games.

Sony continues to prove that it is the best place to play, and has the best games available. It's got some heavy competition in the switch if they throw the Haymakers they are rumored to throw this year.

I was worry about the addition of the kid and how different the gameplay is than the old games with Krato' no longer having old main weapon and having instead an Axe and the kid in the middle annoying you and how it would impact the gameplay with those changes. so i'm surprise of how high the score's are, i thought that this game may not score as high as previous games before with the changes that were made. Really ready to pull my PS from my closet and give this baby a try.
