God Of War PS4 Review Roundup [Updated]: Here's What Critics Are Saying

Turns out you can teach an old God new tricks.

Ever since God of War was revealed for PS4, it's been clear the game would differ from its predecessors in the series. It appeared to be slower, with more of an emphasis on character development and very different combat. The game has also learned a lot from fellow PS4 exclusive The Last of Us.

Now, with God of War's release date drawing ever closer, reviews have gone live for the next big PS4 game, and it seems critics are impressed. In our God of War review, Peter Brown awarded the action-adventure title a 9/10, saying it's a "spectacular action game with epic set pieces, big-budget production values, and hard-hitting combat." For more on what critics thought, check out our review roundup below, or head over to Metacritic for a wider view of the game's critical reception.

GameSpot -- 9/10

"In many ways God of War is what the series has always been. It's a spectacular action game with epic set pieces, big-budget production values, and hard-hitting combat that grows more feverish and impressive as you progress. What may surprise you is how mature its storytelling has become. Like Kratos, God of War recalls the past while acknowledging the need to improve. Everything new it does is for the better, and everything it holds onto benefits as a result. Kratos is no longer a predictable brute. God of War is no longer an old-fashioned action series. With this reboot, it confidently walks a new path that will hopefully lead to more exciting adventures to come." -- Peter Brown [Full review]

IGN -- 10/10

"I expected great action from God of War, and it delivers that handily. But I didn't expect it to be a thrilling journey in which every aspect of it complements the others to form what is nothing short of a masterpiece. It’s a game in which Kratos, a previously one-note character, becomes a complex father, warrior, and monster, embattled both on the field and within his own heart about how to treat his son; one in which the world opens up and shifts, offering rewards in both gameplay and knowledge of its lore that I treasured with each accomplishment. The obvious care that went into crafting its world, characters, and gameplay delivers by far the most stirring and memorable game in the series." -- Jonathon Dornbush [Full review]

GamesRadar+ -- 5/5

"I don't think it’s possible to overstate just how good God of War is; how well realised its world, how nuanced and layered its characters and storytelling. The depth and craft of its combat, puzzles and almost every system it has sparkles and shines with an indulgence and luxury that regularly stopped me in my tracks to drink it all in. Whether breathless and bloody in the aftermath of an axe-hacked victory, or watching Kratos and his son Atreus share a genuinely human moment, this is a level of game making that doesn't happen often. The final question really isn't about where it sits in any game of the year discussions, but rather its place in eventual game of the generation talks." -- Leon Hurley [Full review]

The Guardian -- 5/5

"It is rare to play a game so accomplished in everything it sets out to do. God of War is a standard-setter both technologically and narratively. It is a game that, until recently, would have been impossible." -- Keza MacDonald [Full review]

Game Informer -- 9.75/10

"Years ago, Kratos killed the deities of Mount Olympus in a gory rampage. Now, in the Norse realm, he has remade himself into a different kind of god. He is quieter and more deliberate, affected by his history but not constrained by it. Kratos' reinvention serves as a narrative hook, but it also parallels the series’ evolution as a whole; where God of War once relied on bombast and bloodlust, now it leaves space for strategy and nuance. It still has superb action and plenty of jaw-dropping moments, but it supports them with a new level of depth and maturity. God of War learns from its past while clearing an exciting path for the future, and emerges as one of the best games of this generation." -- Joe Juba [Full review]

Variety -- No Score

"Kratos remains capable of startling violence. But there is a sense that even Sony Santa Monica has recoiled from some of 'God of War's' legacy, and the game is better for it. It is a game that treats its history with respect where appropriate, but without obligation, even in its very concluding moments. This new God of War has some rough edges remaining in its transition to something new, but even in its concluding moments, it commits to its vision in a way that few games do--and it's the first time the series has felt vibrant and important in a decade." -- Arthur Gies [Full review]

Polygon -- 10/10

"A decade ago, director Cory Barlog helped establish the God of War franchise as an iconic gory and debaucherous video game romp. While its antihero, Kratos, had pathos (he killed his wife and daughter in a fit of rage, his skin forever grayed by their ashes), it served little dramatic purpose, rather existing as a grimdark excuse for his god-slaying and orgy-having ways. Barlog--now older, a father--has returned to the series with a bundle of talented designers, many of whom served on the earlier games, to make good on that rich but neglected potential at its core. There's still plenty of gore, but the now the guts have meatiness." -- Chris Plante [Full review]

Eurogamer -- Recommended

"Like Kratos, the god of fury who must learn not to fear his son, this is a strange beast, really. The latest technology and astonishing craft and artistry are employed to deliver a game of extremely simple pleasures--a wash of new pseudo-ideas that cannot hide the fact that the basics remain unfixed because they were not broken. God of War dresses things up, in other words, but it is ultimately the same deal it always was. As is the way with myths, I guess. As is the way with gods." -- Christian Donlan [Full review]

This was supposed to fail because industry folks insist people only want to pay for overpriced online multiplayer maps. Could everything we know about the world be completely wrong?

@khanwashere: No, but most games aren't big, first party exclusives like God of War is. Most of them don't get these kinds of reviews and positive hype, either. I doubt God of War is going to make as much money as Fortnite, or even Call of Duty, but it's got the advantage of the publisher also being the platform holder. It'll do well, sell some PS4s, generate positive rep for the company and the system, and justify a sequel in 3 years.

@khanwashere: Activision has 4 billion dollars that say no, it's not wrong at all. I doubt GOW 2018 can make that much in its whole lifetime. Even if it outsells Uncharted 4 it won't even make one billion. The real money is in MT. Sorry, but it's true.

@Bread_or_Decide: So, um...you're completely wrong.

The GoW franchise has sold 21 million copies, which easily puts it over 1 billion in sales BEFORE premium purchases and merchandise. That's also not including GoW 4.

So as a franchise, I'd bet on it being around 2 billion if you include all the DLC, premium bundles, and merch.

So sure, there's more to be made fleecing players on multiplayer loot boxes and useless digital garbage, however, it shows there's still a market for quality single player games.

@chakan2: A single game, not the franchise. There’s no chance GOW 2018 by itself can make 4 billion dollars. I’m 100% correct. Don’t twist my words and then tell me I’m wrong.

@chakan2: God of War 2018, by itself as one game, cannot make 4 billion dollars for Sony. If you think that's possible you're a crazy person and should be institutionalized.

@Bread_or_Decide: "Activision has 4 billion dollars that say no" Where at all did you say a single game made 4 billion dollars??? Yet you're arguing that he is wrong because GOW 4 as a single game won't make 4 billion dollars? You're twisting your own words...

@gingagoonin: MT has made Activision 4 billion dollars. Single Player is cute and will get you some cheers from nerds online but the real money is in MT. That's my point. GOW for all of its success will never bring Sony the kind of money GTAV online brings in for Taketwo or Overwatch for Activion Blizzard. This delusional world that gamers reside in incredible. GOW 2018 will never bring in that kind of cash so Sony will always be losing out, and don't think they aren't noticing.

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-5-players-are-spending-lots-on-microtransactio/1100-6456644/

TC's original question, is everything we know about MT wrong? No it's not wrong. It makes companies a ton of money, more so than any one SP game can bring in with it's 59.99 price tag.

@Legend_of_Link: you gotta admit.....some of the reviews were blatantly perfect lol. Nonetheless, GOW 4 and Sony's other AAA cinematic single player titles are so refreshing among the genre's scarce library. Hope they continue to keep at it since Microsoft clearly only wants to publish mediocre multiplayer titles over quality single player experience 9/10 times.

Aright need an opinion here, should I sell my PS4 and get the PS4 Pro God of War limited edition? Double the space, comes with the game, upgraded graphics and looks pretty nice. I'm on the fence on Pre-Ordering it.

@Ice-Cube: It all depends , if you have a 4k tv then it's a much better choice but even for 1080p it now has supersampling so it will still look better than a regular PS4. Some games have performance modes as well that you can't utilise on a regular PS4.

Just keep in mind though that despite all the claims of 4k a lot of it is checkerboard rendering which can look good but does have deficiencies over true 4k. You can see stair stepping at times in things such as the waterfalls in the latest Uncharted game. Not as noticable if you are a few feet from your tv but you can still see it all the same.

You will find most games that dynamically scale are limited to 1440p or 1620p on the Pro as well . This is to give headroom for the GPU to try and keep frame rates from hovering away from a mostly 30 fps target. This is well short of 4k and can look a bit blurry on a large 4k display though so just keep that in mind.

The God of War Pro console only comes with the standard edition of the game too from what i can see , try to get at least the ltd edition which has steel book and artbook. In Australia it is sold by JB Hifi.

It's a nice looking console in any case so i'd probably go with it if i didn't already have a Pro

Hard Drive is not really an issue as you can swap it out anyway or just use another external one. I use a 4GB external with my Pro.

@Ice-Cube: Going from ps4 to ps4 pro is like.....going from HD 7850 to an r9 290. Which back then were $250 apart and that was considered excellent bang for the buck. So yes, technically speaking it is around a 200% video card upgrade and it is incredible bang for the buck. Buy some air pillows, pay $2 at your local post office for a box and sell it off. Its totally worth the effort.

@ishsgames: Yea i'm pretty much doing that, already have it pre-ordered and have a few buyers for my PS4 at $300. Pretty good savings, glad I went that route. Thanks for the replies guys. EB Games was sold out and Best Buy was the only place left that had stock. Now it's sold out everywhere.

Looking forward to God of War now. =D

@Ice-Cube: only buy game consoles at Costco. They usually are the cheapest, but also come with that lifetime warranty, essentially, that let's you return it for any problem the console could come up with at the store.

You might save some money getting it somewhere else, but I'd rather have the peace or mine knowing that my console will work perfectly for the next five+ years.

@Ice-Cube:Honestly, I'd save it for different PS4 Pro, personally I don't feel like the limited edition looks that great, in the sense that if I look at it I don't think of God of War. Looks kind of tacky, obviously that's personally opinion and has nothing to do with the God of War franchise changing (which I like), it just doesn't represent the epicness of the game. I want someone to be able to look at my ps4 and know what game it would be representing, i feel like it fails to do so.

There's alot of good games coming out this year, so I feel like you could prolly find a better limited edition later. Some good examples are the MGS5 ones (my favorite), dragon quest, uncharted, monster hunter. Then again, if you're just looking for better performance, go for it, might aswell get a limited edition than a normal one.

@nakx123: Nice colour though, always liked that silver type look of Playstations. Used to have a Silver Ps2 with the blue lighting and was silly enough to trade it in on my PS3 . Lucky it's an original Ps3 that plays all PS2 games though.

@deviltaz35: Yea I kind of regret trading in my old colored consoles too, I'm surprised your ps3 is still working if it's that old, think I went through 2 ps3's since it's first release. Personally I only ever liked the silver color on the PSP or better yet, the pearl white was amazing on the PSP.

Currently have the gold PS4, I feel like silver just doesn't stand out too much, to close to looking grey especially if you're looking at your ps4 from a distance (playing from a couch or something). Then again, I haven't actually seen Silver playstations before to really judge, basing my opinion off the silver controllers I've seen since I assume it would have a similar palette.

@skot_free: Damn that's awesome, personally I wouldn't sell it but just so you know, the Anniversary PS4's go for around $2k on ebay, so unless you're crazy about collectibles (like the kind that would buy something and put it on display rather than use it), selling it would give you quite a bit of value. You could buy multiple PS4's and possibly equip them with SSD's for better load times (might as well if you're going pro).

@abaddon7780: lol that is not even half true and you know it. It has significant issues with certain games and often strays from the target frame rate. Even God of war is not a locked 30 fps on Pro.

I am not knocking the Pro as i have one myself but saying it has no issues at all running games is just false.

The biggest issue is lack of texture memory for 4k and also the CPU which in that regard holds back the Xbox One X as well.

It's evident especially in games such as Doom and the new Wolfenstein where certain scenarios are more CPU bound than GPU bound.

the next consoles should be amazing coupled with decent CPU's to backup the large GPU performance increase over current consoles.

I can only imagine how God of War could have looked on a PS5.

However you are right about the pricing and if people like the PS4 exclusives it's a great deal.

If the exclusives don't interest someone though the Xbox One X is a far better deal due to it's amazing backwards compatibility enhancements for old games and the best versions of the Multi platform on console as well.

Best thing to do is get both if you can afford it.

@Ice-Cube: I've been considering the same thing but I decided in the end to wait for a really good deal on a PS4 Pro in the end rather than a graphical upgrade for £380 if you include the price of the game.

My reasoning is that I want to spend sub £300 if I am going to buy a Pro at all.
