God Of War DLC Idea Scrapped For Being "Too Ambitious"

People told Cory Barlog that his idea was "crazy."

Sony's PlayStation 4-exclusive God of War launched in April behind rapt praise from critics and commercial success. Some fans might have expected DLC to follow, but that never happened. It remains to be seen if the action game will ever receive any additional content, but what we do know is that game director Cory Barlog pitched a DLC idea that was too ambitious. As a result, this expansion, at least in the way Barlog imagined it, may never see the light of day.

"I had a really fun idea for a DLC that I only regret because I would love to have done that," Barlog told Kinda Funny. "But it was too ambitious."

Barlog said it would have been like The Last of Us 1's Left Behind or Uncharted Lost Legacy releases, which were big enough to warrant their own standalone releases.

"It would [have] ended up being its own thing," Barlog said of the mystery God of War DLC. "Rightfully so, everybody said, 'Dude, this is crazy, this isn't DLC, this is a little too big."

One of the only regrets that Barlog said he still has about God of War is that the team wasn't able to release the Photo Mode and New Game+ options at launch. Instead, these were released through free updates after the game was released. The New Game+ mode did add some new armor and customisation items, but it might not have been the proper expansion some fans would have wanted.

God of War was one of GameSpot's favourite titles of 2018, while it beat out Red Dead Redemption 2 to win the overall Game of the Year award at The Game Awards in December. The game may not be finished winning awards yet, as it is nominated for a top writing award at the Writers Guild Awards this year.

GoW was a fantastic game, large enough to hold it's own without being so big that it became a slog, wrapping up it's story while teasing more. I had no problem that they didn't push out New Game+ out the gate, because I never expect that from any game, and it definitely never keeps me from picking it up to begin with. To be honest, New Game+ is too daunting when a game is more than 15 hours or so, I'd rather put that time into something entirely new.

As for the DLC, I'm fine with them shelving it to put those resources towards the sequel.

@masterfrankgrimes: I doesn't matter how well made a game/film/series is, there is always this kind of comment with no argument whatsoever.

@noelrose: To be fair, he doesn't need to argue any more than someone who claims it was the best game of the year.

Great, I'd rather another full game. I almost never find the DLC to be worth the price they are offering. Adds so little, charges so much.

@Hagan: Yes, Left behind was released as a standalone meaning you didn't need the base game though it is included in the ps4 remaster of the last of us.

DLC too ambitious?!! Usually the DLC is some half-assed cash grab. I think people would've loved an "expansion pack" DLC for this game. The problem was probably that it may have taken too long and then would've delayed a PS5 game.

Lol it sounds like an excuse Sony brand loyalist will buy. Same team that made players wait 4 months a New Game+ that the original trilogy had day 1.

Watch how funny it will be when RDR2 gets dlc and expansions but this doesn't

@yeezer: lol maybe the game is good enough on its own merits and doesn't need DLC to flesh out an already self contained game. ever think of that?

@Xristophoros: The game certainly isn't good on its own. Kratos is a one note bird.

@yeezer: Still no sign of GTAV DLC, so why would RDR2 get it?? Besides extra content in online to keep the microtransactions going, I doubt it will get anything.

Are you kidding? Left Behind was just a couple hours long and was the most useless dlc I've ever seen. The fact that they've decided to sell it seperately certainly doesn't say anything about it's size, or quality.

@noelrose: I didn't pay anything for it because it was included in the PS4 version. But it was a complete waste of time to me and yes, I didn't care about the girl and her gf. There really just wasn't anything worthwhile to see in that very short dlc. Very short and still too long for me due to how boring it was. Barely any gameplay either.

@noelrose: Uhuh. I liked the story of the main game. I don't enjoy watching little girls goofing around. There was nothing meaningful there whatsoever.

@Atzenkiller: Agreed...a better example of DLC worthy enough to be released as a stand-alone expansion in my eyes would be Far Cry Blood Dragon.

That would explain the non visited Realms and some story points that were left open.

I'm guessing a quicker sequel then

No DLC is a good thing. Selling a full completed game for a full price always produces better games.

@Thanatos2k: OMG thank you! I really don't get why people want dlc all the time - I mean surely it would be better if they spent their time making a new, complete game, rather than "extra content"? I used to like Tekken for example, but I look at Tekken 7 and it's all "Tekken 7 new season!" I'm just... I don't want Tekken 7 season 3, I just want Tekken fucking 8!

Not sure why I went to Tekken instead of God of War 5 (that's right, I said 5), but what's done is done.

That’s a shame as my only real issue with the game was the blue balls it left me with, talking about all the cool shit the gods are up to but never getting around to showing most of it. Would’ve appreciated whatever DLC he’s referring to.

@Cikatriz_ESP: True but they are starting a new story. So They obviously want the sequels to be more epic then the previous ones so they have to tone it down to be able to do that. This was a great game though

@poorgamer: A serious contender for Game of the Generation, and honestly one of the only games in recent memory that actually left me wishing there was more.

Well that blows. Whats wring with it being that big like the last of us? There has to be more to it because that justs sounds like they were being lazy. I know it takes time and effort to make a game but they are game developers. They make games. I really wish they would of done the dlc but i guess will just wait it out for another god of war game

TheLastOfUs 'Left Behind' was boring & it toom me 2 separate times to force finish it..

It proved the Devs we're in FULL DENIAL of why we loved TLOU..

*we loved the stealth gameplay,

not the story.. well not the story without the gameplay..

they went hand in hand & the dlc was missing something.

only on my 2nd playthrough (year or 2 later did I decide to finish the DLC)

@noelrose: Hell, where could I start there. God of War, Bloodborne, Divinity OS II, to name some fairly new ones. Basically anything that isn't dumbed down completely in every aspect of gameplay just to appeal to the widest audience possible/the lowest common denominator. Something that's made with a clear vision, not just a mashup of all the current trends. Something that has actual "substance", not just "content".

@Berserk8989: That's actually funny, i have an opposite view on this aspect. I think they balanced quite well the gameplay mechanics to satisfy many audiences (the rpg aspects of the signs build that allows you almost to be Wizard instead of a Witcher) while still being engaging and entertaining. You seem like a purist and i understand your point, but i don't agree that only this makes a gameplay "terrible" or "excellent".

Only a few small things bothered me on W3's gameplay mechanics, like how artificial the Witcher senses felt.
