Ghostbusters Opens With $46 Million, But Can't Beat Secret Life of Pets

Sony's reboot rakes in millions, but Universal's animated movie stays on top for a second straight week.

Sony's long-awaited and controversial Ghostbusters reboot opened in theaters on Friday in the US. The first-weekend projections are now in, and the action-comedy is expected to make $46 million, according to Deadline. This is a "tad higher" than the Hollywood site expected, it said.

"This is the biggest opening for a live-action comedy in over a year and we reached a wide audience that's both new and nostalgic," Sony marketing chief Josh Greenstein said. "Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones made it fresh."

Greenstein said he's also optimistic about next weekend. "We have room to run as we are the only live-action comedy in the market," he stated.

Ghostbusters could not topple Universal's hit animated film, The Secret Life of Pets, which stayed perched at the No. 1 position that it's held since opening a week ago.

Here are the top US box office films for the weekend of July 15-17, according to studio-reported estimates posted on Deadline:

  1. The Secret Life Of Pets -- $50.56 million
  2. Ghostbusters -- $46 million
  3. The Legend Of Tarzan -- $11.1 million
  4. Finding Dory -- $11 million
  5. Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates -- $7.5 million
  6. The Purge: Election Day -- $6.08 million
  7. Central Intelligence --$5.3 million
  8. The Infiltrator -- $5.3 million
  9. The BFG -- $3.7 million
  10. Independence Day: Resurgence -- $3.45 million

Head to Deadline for a full breakdown of this weekend's US box office performance.

Eddie is trying to confuse everybody with his list. No, it's not in second place or will ever be. Opening is not as important as the coming weeks, and I highly doubt people will still be watching this garbage after the first week... Well except all the girls with man hair that will be watching it non stop to try to inflate numbers.

This is definitely a domestic flop. Aside from using the "You are a misogynist if you don't see this movie" marketing campaign, there's no compelling reason to go see this in a theater. No one is in suspense over whether or not ghosts get busted.

@playstationzone: Comparing with the big kids movie in the middle of the summer will always be a hard thing. I'm pretty sure Ghostbusters will make a fair deal of money the second week as well, when people realise the reviews showed the hate campaign was pure misogyny.

@duckofdeath: Actually Misogyny was part of the Ad campaign to discredit any negative reviews. One of the best marketing ideas in years. Wait till you see the movie, its pretty bad, very bad, Mostly toilet humour and bad script writing.

@wetro: That is probably the most contrived defence I've ever heard for woman hating. "They started it by making it, which means it's okay for us to hate women."....

@duckofdeath: Well they began stating categorically that anyone who disliked the trailer was a misogynist and hated women, and continually stated that fact all throughout the marketing campaign.

@musalala: You haters just can't stop doing that creationist thing to avoid admitting you are what you are, can you? :D

I was a fan of the Ghostbusters Facebook page before the reboot was announced. I've seen the whole disgusting behavior of the jealous cavemen hating women evolve, just because these women are successful and not standing in front of the kitchen stove giving birth to more men. It is not marketing. It is bigots unable to accept that we don't live in the 20th century ant more.

@wetro: Let me get this right, wetro. You're allowed to hate, but I'm not allowed to point that out? Why should I even consider caring about your opinion when you clearly think that no one should be allowed to have a different opinion than you?

I've actually seen the movie. It does not suck, it's a comedy like any other comedy. Great passtime, nothing to get offended by. Unless you're a misogynist, of course.

People should refuse to go and see this movie, it went against what the majority wanted.

@Keitha313:

Huh. So ... when you next go out to a restaurant, should you be required to eat only whatever the majority of other diners ordered? Because if so, I sincerely hope you're not allergic to peanuts or shellfish ....

Honest to goodness, I didn't think it made sense to mess with the perfection that is Ghostbusters, either, but so many ofyou are making it impossible to hold a concurring opinion with your weak justifications.

Stop making the rest of us look stupid.

@sammyf: Thats the most retarded comparison ever. That would imply that there is a choice of different Ghostbuster movies to see at the theatre depending on your preference. There isnt, there is only one movie to see.

Requesting what the fans wanted is not a weak Justification. Its the most common common request and makes sense.

Stop making yourself look stupid.

@wetro: Dimbulb, he did not "request[ ] what the fans wanted," he insisted that all consumers should "refuse to go and see this movie" because "it went against what the majority wanted."

Neither democracy nor capitalism work that way, thank Christ. People can freely produce and market niche products without requiring a public referendum to approve everyone else's private consumer transactions. Because this isn't the flippin' Soviet Union.

But thanks for taking 15 minutes out of watching the Trump convention to share your opinion.

This movie flopped. Honest critics panned it. Women then screamed about equality and made negative remarks which only embarrassed themselves... It is good to see the right people were right all along. Feminists go take a nap now and please stop trying to ruin the our country.

I love how GS has promoted this movie because of its agenda.

This movie FLOPPED! It opened second on its first weekend to a movie that has already been out. It has a 150 million dollar budget plus 100 million in marketing. As a general rule it needs to make twice that to be successful. That's 500 million. No way does GB make anything even close to that.

Once word of mouth gets out this week how bad the movie is, it will drop like a stone. I am glad this pathetic feminist ripoff is a failure.

I saw it this weekend; I really liked it. It's funny, entertaining, and refreshing to see 4 women take the lead in a film like this. It's not perfect: the plot is a bit run-of-the-mill, and there's an over-reliance on made-up scientific gobbledygook, but other than that, it's great. Definitely would not be any better if they'd had men playing the same roles.

This film will have a steep drop off next week. I'll be surprised it it even takes in 10 million. It won't make back its production costs. It will be a failure.

I've seen almost no hype for this movie outside of sites like Gamespot. And a weird plug from Alex Trebek on Jeopardy the other night.
