Last week, Epic kicked off its Mega Sale with a bang by offering Grand Theft Auto V for free. The giveaway proved to be so popular that it crashed the storefront for hours. This week's freebie isn't Grand Theft Auto V-level popular--after all, GTA V has sold more than 130 million copies--but it's still a big one. Until May 28 at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET, you can snag Firaxis' wonderful turn-based strategy game Civilization VI free of charge. All you need to do to claim Civilization VI is create a free Epic account and turn on two-factor authentication.

Like Grand Theft Auto V, Civilization VI was a mystery freebie leading up to the unlock time. We're learning that Epic's mystery freebies, which are only running during the Mega Sale, tend to be huge AAA hits. Typically, we learn the next Epic Games Store freebie a week in advance. We're tracking every free game at the Epic Games Store, so you can see what has been up for grabs since the program launched in December 2018.

If you haven't shopped the Epic Games Store's fantastic Mega Sale, claiming Civilization VI also has a tangible benefit outside of getting the game for free. By snagging Civ VI, you'll get a $10 off coupon to use on any game priced $15 or more in the Mega sale. Each time you buy a $15 or up game, you'll then be rewarded with a new coupon.

Civilization VI originally released in 2016 to critical acclaim. It earned a 9/10 in GameSpot's Civilization VI review for its welcome enhancements to the tried-and-true Civ formula. "Just like a real civilization, however, the franchise evolved over time, gradually grafting new ideas onto its classic framework--a process that’s now culminated in Civilization VI: the deepest, most well-rounded base game the series has ever seen," critic Scott Butterworth wrote.
