George Clooney Gave Advice To Ben Affleck On Playing Batman: “Don't Do It”

Affleck didn't listen.

George Clooney gave Ben Affleck some advice on playing Batman: "Don't do it."

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Clooney--who played Batman in Joel Schumacher's 1997 box office bomb Batman & Robin--recalled the advice he gave to Affleck. "I actually did talk to him about it. I said, 'Don't do it.'"

Clooney said the advice he gave to Affleck--who played Batman in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Justice League--was based only on his own experience, which wasn't great. "I wasn't good in [Batman & Robin], and it wasn't a good film," Clooney recalled.

"But what I learned from that failure was, I had to rethink how I was working," he added. "Because now I wasn't just an actor getting a role, I was being held responsible for the film itself."

Affleck did take the part of Batman in Dawn of Justice, against Clooney's advice, and Clooney remarked that Affleck "did great" in the movie.

Affleck--who won Oscars for Good Will Hunting and Argo--was initially attached to write, direct, and star in a new Batman movie called The Batman. However, he eventually dropped out. Explaining his decision to leave, Affleck told Jimmy Kimmel that he "couldn't crack it."

There is no word yet on who will be the next actor to play Batman after Affleck. Other actors who have played Batman over the years include Christian Bale, Michael Keaton, and Val Kilmer.

Let me guess he's supposed to take advice from someone who had Batman nipples in a movie? No wonder he didn't listen to you. I'm my opinion, he did say better than you. He was even a better choice of Batman too. Accurate to the character.

I prefer Bale over Affleck and Keaton over both personally. Actors do get held responsible for the movies, when the reality is the writing and directing are almost always the reason movie potential is lost.

@goobermcdermit: Agreed, Keaton was the best. I also happen to like those Batmans better than the others as well.

@goobermcdermit: Bale is the best Batman so far, from the moment Affleck was casted, I knew he wasn't a good fit for the role. I'm not even sure why they picked him. But WB should not even had made Batman v Superman or Justice League, they should have taken the Marvel approach and build a universe first. They got greedy and that greed, was the downfall of those movies.

At least Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Shazam were actually good.

@alex33x: Affleck was the best live action Batman since Keaton. Were people were actually afraid of him and he seem like something not human. Bale got worse as the trilogy went on ..." Where's the TRIGGERRRR " lol please

Right on the homepage,

“but Affleck didn't list.”

Must be an Eddie article. Not even a typo. Just couldn't be bothered finishing.

How you keep this job is something physicists may one day discover.

Just an FYI, front page says "didn't list."

And I hope you only left out the late Adam West as an actor who played Batman because that was TV and not a movie because otherwise that's pretty shameful.

Christian Bale was good. Doubt anyone will top his Batman. I also really like Michael Keaton.

Michael Keaton + Tim Burton = awesomesauce.

I consider Christian Bale's Batman as the best portrayal of the comic book's Dark Knight in the movies.

@firedrakez: how was he the best he had no detective skills . Fox did everything for him he even got tricked and had his whole fortunate stolen. Was tricked. ..and he didn't even want to be Batman by the end of the trilogy. Which is not Batman. He can't help but be Batman. Didn't like his goal was to not be Batman

@firedrakez: His awful batman voice just knocks him down a notch. Keaton did it all, without that obnoxious voice.

He makes a point I've never thought about that comic book actors get held responsible for the movie (maybe none more so than Batman), but it's still stupid, Batman is a dream role. To this day it's one of Clooney's biggest roles, failing in it didn't harm him and it won't harm Affleck.

I have mixed thoughts on Batfleck. I didn't like the character's direction, which was more Snyder's doing. But he wasn't the calculating, tactical, even conservative Batman that is capable of hanging back, analysing every angle and determining a weakness (Bat wins with prep time) that we all know from the comics and animated series. That should've been his dynamic with Justice League. Instead he was directed to be more of a brawler with gadgets, which of course when the bigger baddies came, did not work out well.

My unpopular opinion is Affleck was, indeed, the best batman. And Clooney... well... I've always said Batman and Robin was a result of very poor communication and intuition. It was trying to be Adam West in the 60's, but they forgot to tell anyone, including the actors and crew. It wasn't so much a bad movie than a very dated premise and approach.

@jedijax: Affleck did his best, but the suit was too bulky, and the need for a voice modulator was kinda lame. He had the looks, the chin, and the bruce wayne vibe. Somehow it didn't all come together. He's not a character actor, at all. He's always best when given few lines and is allowed to look out in the distance.

@jedijax: affleck being the best batman is a popular opinion though... he was just unfortunate to be casted into a movie that doesnt use batman strength. Battfleck would have worked wonders in a nolan directed film.

@sakaixx: Actually Bale's Batman is considered the best potrayal of the Dark Knight in the movies. Unlike Affleck who was criticized for the role, Bale received a lot of praise for his Batman movies.

@sakaixx: It is not a popular opinion at all. Bale is the go-to Batman decisively.

@nabinator: Yes it is, even people that love those movies make fun of his voice and say he made a better Bruce Wayne than Batman (and certainly not looks wise).

@nabinator: I love the Nolan films. They are dear to me. But I am not a fan of Bale as Batman. His voice killed it for me, and he was too... mopey.

@sakaixx: Really? Perhaps it is only unpopular in other sites I frequent, then. I wholly agree with you. I would have loved seeing him in better Batman films.
