We stopped by THQ's booth at Gen Con 2002 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and watched an early version of Evil Dead: A Fistful of Boomstick in action. Though we were able to see only the PS2 version--a version that was only about 30 percent complete--the game will be headed to both the PS2 and Xbox. The game is being developed by Vis Entertainment, creator of State of Emergency, and will use that game's engine. Evil Dead 2 will be a much more freeform third-person action game that will pit Ash (Bruce Campbell's character in the cult-classic movie) against a huge army of "deadites" (zombies), and will let players fight their shambling enemies with a two-handed combat system that lets Ash carry a weapon in each hand. As we watched, Ash tore up a city full of deadites with a shotgun in one hand and a chainsaw in the other. Ash will have different special attacks that will let him slice off limbs or impale his enemies, and like the movies, he'll also be able to fire his guns over his own shoulder, or behind his back.

Fist Full of Boomstick will be a mission-based game that will give you certain objectives in each level, like finding and rescuing a specific character, but much of the game will be focused on fighting hordes of zombies. In addition, many levels will have innocent civilians running through the streets. If Ash takes too long to kill off the nearby deadites, his enemies will transform these civilians into more deadites that Ash will need to dispatch.

Apparently, much of the game will take place in Deerborne, the town of Ash's origin from the original films. Apparently the evil Necronomicon tome has somehow "fed itself into" the town, infesting it with zombies. Ash will pick up a variety of different weapons, and will also be able to learn some magic spells, including the ability to travel through time. Eventually, Ash will end up visiting a futuristic version of Deerborne, as well as American Civil War-era Deerborne, and the Deerborne of the 1960's.

Despite the fact Evil Dead: A Fist Full of Boomstick is scheduled for release next spring on the PS2 and Xbox.
