The good news keeps pouring in for Microsoft's holiday hit, Gears of War. The gritty shooter has surpassed another milestone, topping 3 million units sold worldwide since its release in early November.

Though it was released in late 2006, Gears of War was the third-best-selling game of last year, behind Madden NFL 07 for the PlayStation 2 (released in August) and New Super Mario Bros. for the DS (released in May).

Gamers are also gobbling up Gears of War-related downloads at an impressive pace. The game's first content pack, which features two bonus multiplayer maps, has garnered more than 750,000 downloads since its release on January 10. Even with all those downloads, Epic and Microsoft won't see a dime from the pack's release--the content is free. In total, Gears of War content--including themes, strategy guides, trailers, and the aforementioned maps--has been downloaded 1.5 million times.

Gears of War is rated M for Mature and won GameSpot's Game of the Year award for 2006.
