Gears of War creator Epic Games today opened the floodgates for information about its upcoming PC-exclusive Unreal Engine 4-powered game Fortnite.

The game is the focus of this month's issue of Game Informer, and the publication writes that the cooperative third-person shooter will be a free-to-play game. Its business model was previously unknown. However, it's not much of a surprise when you consider Epic Games cofounder Tim Sweeney is transitioning the studio to become more like League of Legends developer Riot Games and DOTA 2 house Valve.

Fortnite will throw players into unscripted events, challenging you to explore the environment for resources and then build fortresses you'll use to thwart waves of enemy attackers. The game features an RPG-like progression system and "Diablo-like looting."

What's more, Fortnite will contain multiple campaigns of "varying lengths," as well as procedurally generated worlds and some kind of PvP component. You can sign up for a chance to play Fornite through its alpha at the game's website.

Epic Games sold the Gears of War franchise to Microsoft earlier this year for an undisclosed sum.
