Gears of War Creator: "I Hope Microsoft Doesn't Screw It Up"

"My fingers are crossed."

This year's Gears of War 4 is the first entry in the shooter series created internally at Microsoft and without the help of its original designer Cliff Bleszinski. Now, Bleszinski has discussed moving on from the series and how he hopes Microsoft will do right by the franchise and its fans.

"Now [the Gears of War franchise] is at Microsoft and I hope they don't screw it up. My fingers are crossed," Bleszinski told VideoGamer.com at a press event for his next game, LawBreakers.

He went on to describe his separation from the Gears of War series as being similar to a break-up.

"It's kind of like breaking up with an ex and wanting to see them get re-married but not to somebody who is better-looking than you," he said, referring to Microsoft.

Microsoft acquired the Gears of War franchise from creator Epic Games in January 2014. Bleszinski exited Epic before that, in October 2012, going on to establish LawBreakers studio Boss Key.

It's not yet clear what Bleszinski thinks of Gears of War 4's gameplay, but he did respond to the emotional first trailer, saying it made him "misty."

Though Bleszinski no longer works on the Gears of War franchise, veteran series producer Rod Fergusson is leading development on the series at new Microsoft studio The Coalition.

The Gears of War 4 release date is set for October 11, but if you buy the $100 Ultimate Edition you can play four days early. Additionally, the game's multiplayer open beta started April 25 and runs through May 1.

@lnception: Its coming with 24 maps. Each map pack on gears 2 costed $14.99 each. Do the math dude, the price is fair.

@kentray1985: Team Fortress 2 has released countless maps and never charged a cent for any of them.

"The price is fair" only for those whose sense of value has been twisted by abhorrent DLC practices.

@freeryu: Why wouldn't you? $50 season passes are disgusting in any game.

@Thanatos2k: I won't be playing UC4 for a long while after release so I can't really share my view on it. True they are all bad but a real fans opinion would matter more than mine.

@Thanatos2k: That is an unfair comparison. TF2 is a free to play game where Gears 4 is going to be 60$. Plus the maps are free to everyone on a rotating map cycle. Meaning once maps are added older ones will be fazed out.

The purchasing of maps is for private matches and only one person in your game would have to have bought access.

@justsaiyan59: TF2 did not start as a free to play game, and they still gave everything away free.

TF2 eventually became a free to play game because Valve didn't care to charge for it anymore.

TF2 also allows users to make and share their own maps, and run dedicated servers with custom rules. (Real dedicated servers, not the sham ones claimed by Microsoft) Gears is a joke feature wise compared to it.

@kentray1985: Paying season passes upfront isn't wise unless you do a lot of research on what you are getting and make sure this is the game you are going to put a lot of hours into it. Gears of War 3 season pass was $30 vs Gears of War $50 season pass. Now then you tell me which one was fair.

@davillain-: Gears 4s season pass has a lot more maps. Also something missing from the article is that a portion of all DLC maps will always be available in matchmaking for free for everyone and they will rotate maps in and out of public access. The season pass allows you to host private matches with all dlc maps.

@Mogan: Gears of War 3 season pass: Shadow of RAAM standalone DLC, Horde Pack, Fenix Rising Maps, and Forces of Nature Maps. That was a worth value back then cause I knew I was gonna put a lot of hours into Gears of War 3 mainly because it was supposed to be the last Gears games I assume.

So he basically wants gears of war to continue but never be as good as when he was there? I like cliffy b but thats a pretty selfish way of thinking. If he really cared about gears he would want it to get better, not be mediocre.
