Gears of War 4 to Include Microtransactions

Purchasing of in-game cosmetics items will be optional; all items can be earned through playing.

Developer The Coalition has confirmed upcoming Xbox One shooter Gears of War 4 will include purchasable cosmetics items. Players will be able to purchase crates filled with cards that have different levels of rarity, and offer cosmetic changes in-game.

The details were revealed in an interview with GameSpot, during which studio head Rod Fergusson said none of the items will affect gameplay and why cards in particular were chosen.

"I feel like that paradigm of cards is really clear to understand for collectibles, like the ability to collect things. We had weapon skins and character skins, so that idea of collecting cards is just easily understood. It felt like it added some engagement in terms of its not the, 'Oh, I like Tiger Stripe. I bought Tiger Stripe. I'm done. I don't need to engage with that system anymore. There's no need for me to hang around.'"

"I like the idea of why you buy Magic: The Gathering booster pack," he added. "If I could just buy the one card I want then I'm out, then you lose it, right?"

Gears of War 4 is not the first game in the series to include the option of in-game purchases. Gears of War 3 had purchasable weapon skins, as did last year's Ultimate Edition.

Fergusson drew comparisons in the appeal of the collectible card mechanic to Blizzard's own collectible card game, Hearthstone. He also reiterated that such purchases were up to the player, and that the same packs could be earned by playing through the game.

"That's I think what we owe the player, is that feeling you get, much like ... I think Hearthstone is brilliant at, that idea of the glow, and the voice, and the excitement about like, 'I want to open packs, and I want to be a part of that engagement. I can't wait to complete today's quest so I can go to the paramedic with pack of cards.' I think that feeds into that engagement.

"I think that's the same thing we're trying to do here. The notion that everything is earnable just through play means the only reason you would ever use real money is when you want to accelerate it. We're going to be balanced where you're going to be constantly getting crates, or enough credits to get crates through the game, so it really is just about your choice," Fergusson said.

Gears of War 4 launches on Xbox One in October, but you won't have to wait that long to give the game a whirl as the multiplayer beta kicks off on April 18. If you're interested in getting into the beta, check out our article for details on how to sign up.

Microsoft recently teased another short video showcasing new combat from the game. The video followed a few other teasers that featured other executions, including one that depicted a move known as "Unicorn-ing," which is when you stab an enemy in the forehead with a knife.

I don't see how having paid cosmetic dlc effects how others enjoy or play the game. If someone doesn't have time or will to grind away on a single game for hundreds of hours thats on them. I like to earn as much as I can, but thats just me. If these microtransactions benefit the developers without affecting gameplay i'm all for it.

@freeryu: Wasn't Gears 3 the first to paid cosmetic dlc? Weapons and character skins were unlocks, but I thought they added paid content sometime after release.

You should only be able to get them by just playing the game. Like normal games. I expected better from you Rod. Lack of achievement is gone when you add MTs.

@Exiled_Elite: Apparently you didn't understand so I'll try to explain it better. If I can earn everything in game there is no point for a company to add MTs other than to please casuals I guess. Like I said if you make shortcuts the less time people are going to play your game.

Fine by me. I'm just hoping it's not bloated with 10,000+ emblems (exaggerating, obviously) like Halo 5. Trying to unlock all things in that game without dropping a couple hundred bucks is a serious time-sink.

@Spartan-1657: But they're pointless things, so I don't mind if they do have 10,000+ emblems. As long as the core game is not affected by microtransactions, I don't mind.

@greaseman1985: Halo 5's warzone sadly had stat-modified guns and vehicles to unlock, which affected gameplay.

@greaseman1985: I agree with what you're saying, which is why I'm fine with this method, but there are some cosmetic pieces I'd like to be able to use before playing the game for 200 hours lol

Not in the least bit surprising as Gears has had microtrasnactions for a long time now. Personally, I have never spent a single penny on weapon skins and cosmetic items and I never will. I think those things should be given out as in game rewards. That being said, I know a lot of people do like them so those people are entitled to spend thier money as they see fit. So basically to each thier own. The fact that they are making them unlockable this time around is a nice change in my book. This is far more gamer freindly than most other microtransaction approaches.

@RighteousNixon: People hear "microtransactions" and they immediately throw a fit without bothering to find out more. It's not like you'll have to spend money to unlock better weapons, or spend money to buy lives so you can play more or something lol. I have also never spent a penny on Gears or Halo microtransactions, but many people do.

Gears 3 had microtransactions too. Didn't spend a cent on crappy weapon skins. A lot of people did though, to each his own.

Like I have said! This system is thousand times better than having un-earnable Add-Ons for $3-$5 a piece. Its nice to get rewarded for playing the game. Let the people who want to buy into it pay. Who cares.

They should offer free DLC though.

As long as the DLC is free and the microtransactions are all just cosmetic, why the hell not? Let the idiots willing to pay for purple zebra stripe camo cover the cost of DLC

@MrFreehuggs: 100% agree. To be honest though i've always been ok with buying actual DLC if it's something desirable. The idea of putting more money into a game that's making an effort with content shouldn't necessarily be looked down on in my opinion. We all get hung up on microtransactions, and rightly so, they're mostly poison, but paid DLC done right is something good i feel.

Gears of War 4 is not the first game in the series to include the option of in-game purchases. Gears of War 3 had purchasable weapon skins.

Five year old GoW3 had microtransactions. So complaining about an innocuous practice this series has had since 5 years ago is pretty pointless.

That's actually better than the previous Gears. Before, you HAD to buy the premium weapon skins if you wanted to use them. Now they are making it so you can unlock them? Of course people will spin that to make it sound like a bad thing.

@n00bsla3r66: Well it is optional lol. A weapon skin is hardly game-changing. Let the obsessive give them more money if that's what they want to do. Why should a developer/publisher not cash in with this sort of thing if there's a market for it? It's a reaction to what a large number of people want, and it's not interfering with the experiences of those that don't. If people stopped buying into microtransactions, then the content surrounding them would disappear into bundles with DLC packs like it was presented in the past. Short answer, it's not a perfect system, but it's hardly as bad as what Jim Sterling preaches on a weekly basis :)

That aside, we're going to be getting free rotating DLC maps on the public servers now. That's miles better than how it used to be with Gears & the constant paid DLC packs. Enough complaining! :P

@paul136: if it it's only cosmetic without sacrificing energy/efforts elsewhere (e.g. in story or gameplay content) then fine. But there's far too many historical examples of developers slowly just gearing their game in to microtransaction machines rather than adding substantial game content - Look at Halo 5 where you can clearly see they put far more effort in their Warzone game mode (where the microtransactions has the most impact), compared to the rest of the game.
