Gears of War 3 stomps 3 million in first week

Epic Games' Xbox 360-exclusive third-person shooter goes triple platinum in seven days as lifetime series sales eclipse $1 billion.

Over the summer, Gears of War 3 designer Cliff Bleszinski said he hoped the third-person shooter would reach sales of over 6 million units in its lifetime. Just a week after launch, the gritty game is halfway there.

Microsoft today said the Xbox 360-exclusive Gears of War 3 has sold through more than 3 million units since its worldwide launch on September 20. Microsoft also trumpeted sales of the Gears of War series as a whole, revealing the blood-soaked franchise has hauled in more than $1 billion in lifetime sales.

Strong sales of Gears of War 3 come as little surprise. In May, Epic Games said 1.29 million gamers in 145 countries tried out the beta for the game, which ran from April 18 to May 15. At the same time, Microsoft confirmed Gears of War 3 reached 1 million preorders faster than any previous Xbox 360 exclusive, beating high-profile games Halo: Reach and Halo 3.

Gears of War 3 is primed to expand in November, with the release of the first of four expansion packs. If purchased separately, those packs will cost players 3,600 Microsoft points ($45). However, players can enlist for the long haul, purchasing a "Season Pass" to preorder all four packs at the discounted price of 2,400 Microsoft points ($30). In addition to the downloadable content add-ons, Season Pass holders will receive an exclusive "liquid metal weapon set."

Gears of War 3 begins with the last human city having been obliterated and series hero Marcus Fenix trying to protect the remaining humans from the Locust horde and from newer, deadlier foes: the mutating Lambent.

@Richardthe3rd said: I never said a billion PC owners were gamers, but I'm sure it well over 10%. Whether they are playing Facebook games or older games downloaded from STEAM, there are more people playing PC games, then console games. Definitely more playing MMO games which is a large chuck of PC's business. I didn't have time to read the whole blog, but this statement pretty much says it all. "" That's only 2 years ago. They are selling more hardware, but consoles still have PC's beat when it comes to software. Sales are definitely down for console software more then PC software. It's easily because of the recession. We'll see how things turn out during the holidays.

@blackace Lol, and I'm sure all 1 billion of those PC's are dedicated to playing games, right? The difference with that install base: not everyone is going to use their PC for gaming or maintain the hardware for it, just like not every car owner is going drag race their mother's station wagon after installing turbos and slicks on it. Where a comparative minority of PC users spend on games, 100% of console users do. I'd be surprised if even 10% of PC's are used to play games at a serious level. Here's a good, albeit outdated article to that effect: << LINK REMOVED >> As far as the recession; you don't think it's hurting PC also? In terms of hardware requirements and buying games, I highly doubt the recession has made the PC, which is the most expensive platform, more appealing to gamers. Especially since laptops, where an upgrade usually requires a new machine, are all the rage.

@Richardthe3rd said: @blackace Bah, I misread your post. Either way, PC had the highest sales of any platform in 2010. The fact that PC activity was equal to half of ALL console software sales says something, and it was nearly double what either the Wii, 360 or PS3 were by themselves. If that $16.2 billion for PC games is true, then the PC as a platform sold at least $2 for every $1 sold on any one of the consoles. ******************************************************************** Well you do realize that there are over 1 billion PC in homes, offices, retail stores, backpacks, etc around the world right?. How many PS2 were sold 145 million. That's not even scratching the surface of how many PC there are out there. How many of those are used for playing games of any kind? More then 150 million. Now take the current generation game consoles. The Wii has sold 88 million units. All the consoles combined doesn't equal how many PC are used for gaming in the world. So the fact that they only have 1/2 what console sold is not a good thing. PC should have move then twice what consoles have sold in software. The recession is hurting console sales. Back in 2005 consoles have over $80billion in software sales. Once the recession is over it'll increase again.

@TheArcade Cool, cheers for the info pal :) Very well may be the case then. Some quick turnaround time though in that case for Naughtydog. Crazy!

So glad they fixed the multiplayer to find matches within seconds rather than wait a lifetime like on the last edition. The last paragraph needs to be changed to "finding Marcus's father"

@Icehearted I'm not sure if you've been able to try out Gears 3 yet, but I've got to tell you, I preordered it and the part I'm enjoying most about it is the campaign. It's lengthy, challenging(ish) on the right difficulty, emotional, and has a good variety of enemies and mission styles. In my opinion the Singleplayer did NOT suffer at all because of the increased variety and focus on multiplayer. I'd completely recommend you give it a go, especially if you loved the story of the first and second, the third will not disappoint you.

@Crash_WL: actually if i remember correctly, its a shorter range. It's just more powerful at seriously close range than the gnasher. look at the gun stats in-game.

@warhawk-geeby: IIRC: Uncharted's cover system was inspired by Gears. Don't quote me on this but I remember hearing some where that the developers of the Uncharted series gave a shout out to Gears somewhere in the game credits. Can't remember if it was Uncharted 1 or 2.

I haven't bought a game in it's first week of release in A LONG time, but I had a good feeling this one would be worth it. Turns out I was 100% correct. Thank you Gears 3. And thank you Epic.

I feel I'm in the minority here, but the focus toward online in the last one really hinders my excitement for part 3. Too many single player experiences have been sacrificed for milti-player, and while I know a lot of people enjoy playing online, I really do not, and wish more games would try to have a beefier single player experience rather than expecting online (which is expensive considering there are fees for that here) to carry most of the game's weight. Another reason to wait and get this used, I guess.

@rasterror Uncharted is an action adventure game with platformer elements. Gears is a cover shooter. And guess what? Gears took the whole cover system off of Killswitch and perfected it. Learn the facts before you become a fanboy.

Great for Gears, I bought it too and so far its a superb game. The only weird thing is it "only" sold 3 milions in first week now thats not a bad number but compared to other games for instance Black Ops on the 360 alone sold 6 milions, MW2 5 mil, Halo Reach 4 mil, GTA4 3,4 mil in the first week. Was expecting more sales because of all the advertising.

Yes, Yes, Now they understand why Gear of War 3 is the best exclusive Xbox 360 this year. I'm one of those 3 Millions and I got to admit, I truly recommend everyone to go buy this game and the best weapon I enjoy is the Retro Lancer just for the Stab-in-Run.

@rasterror Was Uncharted actually inspired by Gears on the cover system? I'm not disagreeing just asking.. Gears was released in 06 an Uncharted came the year after, my bet is that both games were in production at the same time.. Otherwise they'd have had to completely change the game in the space of 7 months :/ I know where you're coming from, but Uncharted and Gears both came not that far apart. You may be right, but I'd be quite surprised if you were.

Well done to EPIC games I say. They planned to stop after the first Gears game but Microsoft pushed them to do another.. and look how big the franchise has got now. It's nice to know that given the space and time decent sequels can be made. The only thing I will say is that the DLC is still a joke. It was something that we'd expect from EA or Activision but not this, I was genuinely quite disappointed. It's quite obviously just been left off the disc to make more money later.. :( Never mind though, all in all a great success :)

It is well worth it. This is the best in the series in my opinion. This one truly offers the full package, campaign, online competitive, and online coop. Great game, I just can't quit playing Dead Island, or Deus Ex to give it some playtime.

@rasterror Leaving aside the fact that Uncharted was in development long before Gears of War came out, in some ways it's the anti-Gears. Instead of a bunch of musclebound gorilla sized men that sound like they gargle charcoal and bathe in testosterone, you have a pretty lean charismatic Indiana Jones type with a woman fighting right there with him. Instead of a brown, grim post apocalyptic wasteland, you've got colorful tropical jungles. Instead of being stuck to just walking or taking cover, you can jump and platform, and everything about the game has a much lighter tone to it. Really, as a whole I prefer Uncharted, but Uncharted lacks the great variety of co op options that Gears has, and that's something that's really reduced it's replay value for me. There's also no chainsaw bayonets, that's a minus. I love those things.

Gears of War, while I thought was repetitive, IS in fact an impressive series. I haven't seen something become this successful out of thin air in such a long time. I really like how they progressively made the series better to the point where even people like me who were bias at first pick up the 3rd game because of how much better they improved, ironing out the flaws and increasing it's technical efficiency to the point of perfection. While the story is still generic as hell for me, who reads a lot, I loved the campaign, I relish the Horde and Beast modes, and the multiplayer is FINALLY fixed from it's crippling flaws. I'm happy to say I purchased Gears for once and can't wait for future games.

Can't wait to play this game. GOW and ME series are what got me to choose and xbox360 over PS3. I can't even stand reading what people have to say about it because I just bought a game last week and I promised myself I wouldn't spend the money and I would wait till the price drops. Games this popular usually the used sales drop very quickly with so many people trying to sell them.
