Gears of War 1-3 and Judgment Among Top Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Games

Those four games are among the top nine most popular backwards-compatible titles, according to Rod Fergusson.

Xbox 360 games Gears of War 1-3 and Judgment are apparently proving popular on Xbox One through the console's backwards compatibility program. Rod Fergusson of developer The Coalition said this weekend that those four games are among the nine most popular backwards-compatible games.

He shared the quote as part of the Gears of War ESL finals on Sunday afternoon, as reported by DualShockers. It's unclear what the other five most popular Xbox 360 games are.

The Gears of War franchise is basically synonymous with Xbox, so it's not altogether surprising that Gears of War 1-3 and Judgment would be popular in the backwards compatibility program. Plus, everyone who bought an early copy of Gears of War Ultimate Edition received free copies of those four games.

Also during this weekend's broadcast, it was confirmed that Gears of War 4 is now slated to arrive in "fall 2016," a change from its previous "holiday 2016" release window. The more than 1 million people who bought Gears of War Ultimate Edition get to play first.

In addition, Microsoft said that 45 percent of Ultimate Edition players are new to the Gears of War franchise.

Yeah that's because 90% of the other games are games no one cares at all about

Notice they say "popular" but they don't actually define the metric. Most played? Most downloaded? Poll numbers?

I can tell you I have only loaded up Gears 3 once, but I have spent about 20+ hours with South Park. Bought it for $8 for one of the xmas sales and despite a few minor issues, its awesome. I didn't miss many games from last gen, but this is one of them. BC isn't perfect, but its a really great feature. I just hope they keep supporting.

Not surprising as they are excellent games. Getting them via Gears of War Ultimate Edition was an awesome deal.

@uta: They won't do Cog Vs Cog. That was a total fail, and the game destroyed 10 years worth of excellent game development with 1 single game. They know they F'd it up and those devs who made Judgement aren't even working on Gears 4 (in fact i think they closed down after judgement lol)

@iammcgruber: No, People Can Fly was not shut down. They were acquired by Epic but have recently split back off into an independent studio again as of last summer. They also retained the Bulletstorm license/IP.

What upsets me is the Remastered version of Gears one. My girlfriend is really getting into video games, and we tried to play split screen co-op. While 75% of it runs okay. Its a joke when the framerates dump during action scenes. Thought they would have done a better remaster... its so bad she gets frustrated and doesnt want to play anymore. And no. Its not consistant 30fps. I see horrendous screen tearing and jumping during Co-op... Figured MS can do better than that.

Single player works great.

So what is it? Lazy Remaster, or Lousy console performance? I'de blame both...

Seriously. Split Screen Co-Op is a joke in that game...

Obviously.... they are the only backwards compatible 360 games that come bundled with the console...aside from Halo

Understand how that works?

Avatar image for dlCHIEF58
dlCHIEF58

@TheExxorcist: You obviously do not understand how it works as that was not the only bundle offered and many consoles were sold prior to the bundle. But three of the four games were given away via GwG which is a more likely reason for this, as well as them all being good games that sold well.

Understand how that works now?

@dlCHIEF58: um... what other Xbox "360" games come bundled with the Xbox One??? Halo and Gears... thats it right?

Judgment? Really?

Avatar image for mothedog

@xsonicchaos: Either judgment or judgement are acceptable spellings but judgment, with a single e, is the spelling used by the game itself.

Avatar image for xsonicchaos

@mothedog: Holy crap! You're right. It's the first time I noticed that's the official title. Not an Xbox gamer, obviously. I consider "judgment" to be crap spelling, but that's just me.

@xsonicchaos: I will give it a go soon.
It is a technically great game...i will find out whats the problem with Judgement compared to other GoWs.
Right now i am positive about the female lead characters.

@sladakrobot: It handles and feels like the 2, which in my opinion is the best in the series and fixes the broken double barrel shotgun from Lancer of war 3. The new weapons are also great and so are the maps. Is it perfect? no. The weapon load out sucks(limited to two) and the story meh but then again when did GOW series had a good story, but as far MP, it's awesome.

Just remaster gears 3 and we're good to go.

The backwards compatability is good for single player for me... but multiplayer can't keep up.. gears 3 was the best also..

@davem1992: I'm still waiting for my free copies (particularly for GoW 2). There are tons of people who have yet to receive their free copies of the games as promised.

@Suaron_x: Yeah im still waiting for gears 1 and 2... they sent me codes for 3 and judgment...

Cool, I want to play them out of order. That will be fun.

If it wasn't for Gears of War as a franchise , I wouldn't have an Xbox One.

Avatar image for dominoodle

Well... yeah. It only makes sense.

Gears of War Ultimate Edition was a pack in with the Xbox One for the holiday. Everyone who played the Ultimate Edition got GoW 1-3 and Judgement for free.

So everyone who got an Xbox One this holiday got all of them for free. So of course it would be the most popular BC game.

Avatar image for dlCHIEF58
dlCHIEF58

@dominoodle: Your reasoning is faulty. As pointed out before me, the Gears bundle was only one to two of the bundles offered this holiday. You also discount the majority of consoles sold prior to this holiday season that had no such bundle.

This is more likely due to 3 of the 4 games being offered as GwG as well as people who actually bought the games and still have them. The Gears UE offer did have an effect, but was far from the only or even main reason why these were played often in BC.

Avatar image for dominoodle
dominoodle

@dlCHIEF58: No... my reasoning is not faulty. GoW UE being a pack in definitely helped.

The GoW bundle has been available since like August, so there have been lots of people purchasing it even prior to the holiday season.

And no it's not one of two bundles.

http://www.gamestop.com/xbox-one/consoles/xbox-one-500gb-gears-of-war-ultimate-edition-console-bundle/123246

http://www.gamestop.com/xbox-one/consoles/xbox-one-1tb-holiday-console-bundle/125971

Both of these bundles have GOW UE and they were the primary console bundles that Gamestop carried. I work at a Gamestop and we sold dozens of these two bundles in the past 2 months and our store is normally very slow.

I'm not saying it's the ONLY reason. But it's definitely a huge factor. A LOT of people bought GoW bundles. It's also one of the few bundles that granted backwards compatible games.

Avatar image for LPDisturbedHU

@dominoodle: There was more than just the Gears bundle. Halo, Tomb Raider, Forza, Lego, etc. had bundles too throughout the fall and holiday season.

But you're right, it's not surprising it all.

Because it's the best franchise on Xbox. Gears > Halo IMO.

I hadn't played the Gears series until the UE because I only owned a PS3 and PC most of last gen. Getting the whole series was great. I'm glad they all made it to BC so I can play through the rest of them.

one must be Halo: Reach

Avatar image for LPDisturbedHU
LPDisturbedHU

@tanerb: I'm assuming the top 9 games (in no order) are

(1-4) GOW-GOWJ

(5) Halo: Reach

(6) Fallout 3

(7) Mass Effect

(8) Borderlands

(9) Assassin's Creed II or Fable 2?

Avatar image for suicidesn0wman

@LPDisturbedHU: South Park and Just Cause 2 would be the other potential games I bet.

Avatar image for LPDisturbedHU
LPDisturbedHU

@suicidesn0wman: I'd doubt it, but both great games!

Avatar image for suicidesn0wman
suicidesn0wman

@LPDisturbedHU: Reason I suggest them is because South Park came out late in the gen, so a lot who upgraded(like me) didn't get to play it, and Just Cause 2 came free with JC3. I think the freebie part of it had a lot to do with Gears being near the top. Guess that would put Rainbow Six Vegas 1 & 2 as potential top 10's as well.

Avatar image for LPDisturbedHU
LPDisturbedHU

@suicidesn0wman: I could see JC2 a lot more than the other three games since JC2 was both a GWG and a free pre-order bonus, plus people were hyped for JC3.

I just don't think any of those four games could really compete (playtime wise) with the big titles I mentioned (even if they were free), but maybe! Not 100% sure.:P
