Gears of War 2 may have been one of the most popular games played online via Xbox Live in 2008, but its multiplayer component wasn't without its share of frustrations. Today, Epic Games vice president Mark Rein said that a patch for Gears of War 2 is expected to arrive by the end of January, and squashing bugs and online-related exploits will be a top priority.

"We're fixing a whole bunch of online exploits," said Rein in a post on the North Carolina-based developer's Web site. "For example we've fixed the ability to wield an invisible shield, melee through some walls, gain infinite Lancer ammo, and equip a shield and a two-handed weapon simultaneously, plus many more." The game update will also address client-side stability in high-latency matches, particularly as it pertains to the shotgun.

Rein also promises a number of changes to improve overall quality for Gears 2's online gameplay, such as more heavily penalizing those who quit matches early, and implementing more spawn-camping protections. Lastly, the Epic VP also said a number of changes were slated for in-game achievements, as well as the addition of new gamerscore point awards for upcoming downloadable content.
