GDC 07: Cliffy B disassembles Gears, mentions sequel

[UPDATE] Lead designer chronicles a game's evolution from the first-person shooter "Unreal Warfare" to the best-selling third-person Gears of War; Microsoft insists sequel "still not official."

SAN FRANCISCO--It was a big week for Cliff "Cliffy B" Bleszinski. The Epic Games designer took the stage several times on Wednesday night at the Game Developers Choice Awards, where his game Gears of War won four trophies, including Game of the Year. Given his reputation for letting les bon temps roulez, many wondered if Bleszinski's postceremony celebrations might put a damper on his 9 a.m. presentation the following morning.

But when the hour was nigh, Bleszinski looked surprisingly chipper as the jumped behind the podium. "I know a lot of you were at the bar last night, so I'll do my best to keep you awake," he joked. He then whipped up some excitement by confirming that Epic Games does "intend to do a sequel" to Gears of War. The revelation was hardly surprisingly, though, since it was initially revealed last November when a Microsoft marketing executive said a Gears "trilogy" was planned. [UPDATE] However, despite the fact that the original game has sold more than 3 million copies to date, Microsoft Game Studios has made no official announcement regarding a Gears of War sequel.

Then, Bleszinski went on to talk about Gears' history. The title began as "Unreal Warfare," a more military-themed game inspired by Tribes and Team Fortress. "We thought, let's do something with vehicles and something that involves a lot of territory control," Bleszinski said. He also said they wanted the game be tied in with connection to Unreal Tournament 2004 and would feature an opponent race called the "Geist." However, Epic's "lead cabal" reconsidered when they: a) decided they wanted a separate, single-player-driven game, and b) realized Nintendo had copyrighted the "Geist" as the title for their ghostly GameCube game. His second choice, "The Worm," also didn't stick.

Bleszinski said the seeds of Gears of War were sown by three titles. The first was Capcom's Resident Evil 4, which made an indelible impression on Bleszinski even before its January 2005 release. "I really liked the pacing and the over-the-shoulder view," said the designer.

Cliffy B drops some knowledge on the audience.
Cliffy B drops some knowledge on the audience.

The second game was Namco's 2004 shooter kill.switch. Though it had much less success critically or financially than Resident Evil 4, Bleszinski felt "it had the best cover system at that time." He felt that incorporating a similar cover system would really change the pace of Gears and set it apart from other shooters.

Another inspiration was the classic arcade game Bionic Commando. In it, players must shoot a grappling hook to ascend from platform to platform vertically. Bleszinski thinks Gears has the same mechanic--jumping from cover point to cover point to advance--on a horizontal axis.

Another interesting tidbit was that Gears started out as a first-person shooter. However, after seeing the impressive graphics of the first Unreal Engine 3 demo, Bleszinski and the rest of the project's lead cabal decided "it would be a crime not to see" the game's hero, who would eventually be named Marcus Fenix. Bleszinski said seeing Fenix so up close that you could see him issue orders and even notice the scar on his ear would make players associate with the character more.

This concept for a Locust
This concept for a Locust "re-animator" was ditched early on.

Speaking of viewpoints, Bleszinski went on a mini-rant about how badly he feels the camera is positioned in most third-person shooters. "My big pet peeve...is when I see the [main] guy blocking the line of sight," he said. Once again he said that RE4's over-the-shoulder camera angle, which always faced the enemy, was a big influence on Gears.

Gears of War's design team also worked in a few camera tricks to play with players' perceptions. Bleszinski's concept behind the camera views was "freedom at a trade-off." When a player gets to cover, his field of view widens. However, when performing the so-called "Roadie Run"--which was inspired by the hunched onstage gait of rock-concert technicians--the field of view gets much narrower.

When the player is running, the camera view also gets much shakier; Bleszinski said he wanted it to look like "CNN-type camera." This was a trick to make players think they were moving faster than they really are, since the "Roadie Run" is just 1.2 times quicker than Fenix's regular gait. He said the shaky-cam was just one of many cinematic tricks used in Gears. "The audience has 70-plus years of film-viewing experience, so they can pick up on filmic cues," Bleszinski said.

Some of the more interesting things about Bleszinski's speech were his descriptions of features that weren't included in Gears of War. One concept was called "combat cash," a system that would let players "scoop up the spoils of war" and buy new items on the battlefield--a system (again) reminiscent of Resident Evil 4's mysterious "What are ya buyin'?" merchant. After consideration, though, the lead cabal felt the feature would take away from the game's "pure action" dynamic.

The whole no-skin-showing Locust power-armor thing didn't go over well, either.
The whole no-skin-showing Locust power-armor thing didn't go over well, either.

Another system that didn't make the cut was the "morale meter." This system would have seen Fenix's squadmates become more and more disheartened the longer they were pinned down by Locust gunfire. If the group did not advance, a squad member would eventually "put a gun in his mouth." Again, the feature was cut, as the leads felt that it would be too disheartening for a player if his or her squad started committing mass suicide during an already tough level.

Lastly, Gears was also supposed to have a much more complex "Orders System" to let players direct their squads. "We realized we were not making Full Spectrum Warrior and felt that implementing too much [real-time strategy] would take away from the central action element," Bleszinski told the crowd.

Hehehe... I read back a page, "Pansy mode"... Hehehehe.... and why was someone whining about revolutionary? Who claimed that? The guy just admitted that this was a streamlined mish-mash of old games that evolved to become something great and you're whining that someone tried to claim revolution? Where's that comment? They just made the system RIGHT! Oh, and agreement with a more recent comment-don't even mention Halo in this place. I'm not the action player in this house, but from the perspective of every action/shooter person I darn well know they're infinitely incomparable on the quality scale (Not to mention seeing them both in action for myself. Not even mentioning graphics even, they're just freaking different!) Oh, and why are we comparing God of War and Gears of War? Because they have similar names? They're on different systems from different companies and are different styles. Can't we just enjoy them BOTH? Waiting on the sequel man, you're Microsoft leader is slowly convincing us on what next-gen console we should be scraping up money for first. :D Best to ya, Myriam.

It's a great game. I just hope they take their time creating a truly great sequel rather than rushing to get something out that is more along the lines of GoW 1.5

God of War is the god of unrealisticness, "therealeu".... still good game through.....Gears is better. God 2 is gonna be great too, but Gears 2 is gonna be better. then again there both on different type of consoles i.e Next gen...last gen we'll talk when God 3 comes to PS3.

You have to hand it to them, Cliffy and the guys at Epic know how to talk to gamers to get them to respond. Gears really showed to me how a "gamer's game" would look and play. It was the first game to really make me believe in the "next -generation". No, it wasn't perfect, but it sure was a lot of fun, and really knew how to get the blood pumping. To all of the haters: just face it, Gears was the best new action game released last year, period. There's nothing to do now but keep playing and wait for more.

Just to let you know, "les bon temps roulez" correctly written is "les bons temps rouler". You still get a point for the effort ; ) (and for those who don't understand, it means letting the good times roll)

Gears was good.. but everyone saying it's a masterpiece are overstating it a bit.. Did you guys not run into the 100s of bugs towards the end of the game? I did.. I'm not baggin though, Gears is a good game, and the best co-op experience out there. (GoW btw is God of War, and was WAY before Gears came out, kthxbye)

LOL "Mass Suicide" that's funny. The player still gets in the way in Roadie Run. You can't see where the guy your chasing is because he's in the way.

It's good to see a developer admitting inspiration from accepted great games, as well as those slightly obscure titles known only to the hardcore. I would like to see this game expanded, more maps, players and weapons that, like the first, are deadly ONLY in the right hands. And the cover system? They never claimed to be the first to incorporate this. They never claimed to be the best at it either - they are though. Or am I forgetting something? (kill.switch is not a better example!) Oh, and one more thing. I stopped playing action games for a while, intead playing RPGs and the like. I stopped reading about games and was losing interest. I was given a 360, having never heard of Gears, as a present and am still playing this on multiplayer today (not RIGHT now, I'm typing) so I would just like to thank Cliffy and al the team for making me stay up to 3am playing games again. Thanks!

Gow, GeoW, WoW?, RE?, MGS?, CS?, TP??? What the hell's "TP" when it's at home, Theme Park??? That games over 12 years old! Why bother using abbreviations when they're so ambiguous and not everybody will even know yet alone play those games, .....just learn to type u lazy so n so's!! And how dare anybody bring the shame of mentioning Halo on the same thread as Gears of War! Halo2, Halo 3 , who cares? I was so bored of the original Halo in less than an hour of playing that I wouldn't dream of wasting my time on the sequels. Grand Theft Auto:SAN ANDREAS is where its at. (on high Spec PC, not PS2 I hasten to add!) As for Pencilpusher69 bragging about his consoles and which one's the best.......its irrelevant, PC will always be at the forefront of games technology. The Cell processor in the Playstation3 isn't powerful enough to run the most advanced features of Crysis which is why you will need Vista/Directx 10 and the best graphics card and PC setup you can get your hands on to appreciate it, unless you want the diluted Directx 9 verson on WinXP :P. "Next Gen Consoles" are already ageing (and stagnant) technologies. PC already has QuadCore processors, soon to be 8 and counting. :D Gears of War is a great game, slightly over rated. It NEEDS TO COME ONTO PC TO REALLY ACHIEVE ITS POTENTIAL! DO IT CLIFFY! DO IT!

i didnt find gears of war revolutionary either ..its not the first game to use duck and shoot method..surely isnt the first game to be violent and graphically bloody and its not the one to first use multiplayer..which i could care lless about..--onlything about this game is the hi-def look..crisp and clear..other than that its just another game... .. .. i am not seeing much of anything revolutionary yet..not even on the wii--sure you can swing the controller for the sword swinging..but other than that..the virtual console is just getting full of older games..not retouched up ot enhanced at all.even the dialogues about what buttones on the controller do are still set to the original console they were on..like mario 64..no new controller setup as you play..you just got to learn which buttons do what and hope you dont forget or die in the process.. .. .. .so give me something thats truely revolutionary..please..until then dont call it revolutionary

Imagine Baird offing himself during an intense battle! WOW! That would have made me like him sooner than I did but it would of made me think that the Gears were cowards.....cool idea I'm glad was left out. Mabey if they had a pansie mode that was real easy and if you squad mates got winged they could shout out something like "I miss my Mommy!" or "I'd rather be watching Oprah!" and then eat a grenade... THAT would be sweeet

This is my first experience to reading a game history as to how the has been evolved from various small elements to a game that is loved by almost everyone who have played. confirming the availability of a sequel really fascinates me and I am very eager to see what other changes they would put up to this awesome game.

GoW was the best game of 2006 by far. Also i lol'd at the Morale Meter description.... "If the group did not advance, a squad member would eventually put a gun in his mouth." To answer branketra: If the physics were as good as the graphics, there would no longer be a need for real life. Everything would be perfectly emulated right there in your 360. I would only leave the house in order to earn enough cash to power my 360 and my tv. I'll live on the pure awesome that would be excreted from that perfect game.

If you two cared to actually read pencilpushers' comment you'll notice the large paragraph is quoting Skiggy80. So really you should pay more attention before you flame. I'm sick of kids jumping the gun and voicing their opinion, it's an opinion for a reason so don't jam it down other peoples throats with insults and speculation.

That Morale Meter sounds awesome, but the only problem with it would be that you couldn't get as attached to the characters you spend the whole game with if they died early on, and who would replace them? It would be great if GeoW 2 could incorporate that somehow though, by making your squad bigger or something, with generic soldiers that can kill themselves and then the main characters which don't, because they're hardcore like that..

Skiggy80 "I would just like to say " HAHAHA"!!! Who got the game now Sony/Nintendo. Oh and what do we still have to come HALO 3? Wow!! I was thrilled with Gears, I thought Lost Planet was sick and we still got games like Forza 2, Halo 3, Fable 2, Too Human, Bioshock, Mass Effect and more than likely MGS4!!! OMG what do you have in your future plans that 360 isnt going to have Sony? Heavenly Sword and DMC4? Whoa!! I just cant wait to see Microsoft dominate the competition like they always do. Its great cuz last gen I was so sick of hearing how great ps2 was. I bought one and sold it in the same week. I need Xbox Live!! $50 is chump change and its just a reason for Sony boys to rip on 360. But your online plans look like crap. The 360 dashboard is so organized. PS3's is scattered everywhere. Not to mention it takes literally 3 hours for an update. I have a ps3, but it would be worth the $600 to see it fail. I am an xbox fan who happens to own all 3 next gen systems, but guess what I play the most by far? My ps3 and Nintendo wii look grey from all of the dust on them. The wii hasnt impressed me at all and the tilt controll on the ps3 was not worth leaving out rumble. Hail 360, the new king and winner of this war!!!!!" Call me crazy, but I doubt you own a PS3 or Wii. And considering the Wii has sold half of the 360's total sales in 3 months, versus the year and 4 or 5 months for hte 360, how long will that lead last do you think? Enjoy your 360, there's nothing wrong with that. But feel free to be a little more realistic...
