GDC 07: Cliffy B disassembles Gears, mentions sequel

[UPDATE] Lead designer chronicles a game's evolution from the first-person shooter "Unreal Warfare" to the best-selling third-person Gears of War; Microsoft insists sequel "still not official."

SAN FRANCISCO--It was a big week for Cliff "Cliffy B" Bleszinski. The Epic Games designer took the stage several times on Wednesday night at the Game Developers Choice Awards, where his game Gears of War won four trophies, including Game of the Year. Given his reputation for letting les bon temps roulez, many wondered if Bleszinski's postceremony celebrations might put a damper on his 9 a.m. presentation the following morning.

But when the hour was nigh, Bleszinski looked surprisingly chipper as the jumped behind the podium. "I know a lot of you were at the bar last night, so I'll do my best to keep you awake," he joked. He then whipped up some excitement by confirming that Epic Games does "intend to do a sequel" to Gears of War. The revelation was hardly surprisingly, though, since it was initially revealed last November when a Microsoft marketing executive said a Gears "trilogy" was planned. [UPDATE] However, despite the fact that the original game has sold more than 3 million copies to date, Microsoft Game Studios has made no official announcement regarding a Gears of War sequel.

Then, Bleszinski went on to talk about Gears' history. The title began as "Unreal Warfare," a more military-themed game inspired by Tribes and Team Fortress. "We thought, let's do something with vehicles and something that involves a lot of territory control," Bleszinski said. He also said they wanted the game be tied in with connection to Unreal Tournament 2004 and would feature an opponent race called the "Geist." However, Epic's "lead cabal" reconsidered when they: a) decided they wanted a separate, single-player-driven game, and b) realized Nintendo had copyrighted the "Geist" as the title for their ghostly GameCube game. His second choice, "The Worm," also didn't stick.

Bleszinski said the seeds of Gears of War were sown by three titles. The first was Capcom's Resident Evil 4, which made an indelible impression on Bleszinski even before its January 2005 release. "I really liked the pacing and the over-the-shoulder view," said the designer.

Cliffy B drops some knowledge on the audience.
Cliffy B drops some knowledge on the audience.

The second game was Namco's 2004 shooter kill.switch. Though it had much less success critically or financially than Resident Evil 4, Bleszinski felt "it had the best cover system at that time." He felt that incorporating a similar cover system would really change the pace of Gears and set it apart from other shooters.

Another inspiration was the classic arcade game Bionic Commando. In it, players must shoot a grappling hook to ascend from platform to platform vertically. Bleszinski thinks Gears has the same mechanic--jumping from cover point to cover point to advance--on a horizontal axis.

Another interesting tidbit was that Gears started out as a first-person shooter. However, after seeing the impressive graphics of the first Unreal Engine 3 demo, Bleszinski and the rest of the project's lead cabal decided "it would be a crime not to see" the game's hero, who would eventually be named Marcus Fenix. Bleszinski said seeing Fenix so up close that you could see him issue orders and even notice the scar on his ear would make players associate with the character more.

This concept for a Locust
This concept for a Locust "re-animator" was ditched early on.

Speaking of viewpoints, Bleszinski went on a mini-rant about how badly he feels the camera is positioned in most third-person shooters. "My big pet peeve...is when I see the [main] guy blocking the line of sight," he said. Once again he said that RE4's over-the-shoulder camera angle, which always faced the enemy, was a big influence on Gears.

Gears of War's design team also worked in a few camera tricks to play with players' perceptions. Bleszinski's concept behind the camera views was "freedom at a trade-off." When a player gets to cover, his field of view widens. However, when performing the so-called "Roadie Run"--which was inspired by the hunched onstage gait of rock-concert technicians--the field of view gets much narrower.

When the player is running, the camera view also gets much shakier; Bleszinski said he wanted it to look like "CNN-type camera." This was a trick to make players think they were moving faster than they really are, since the "Roadie Run" is just 1.2 times quicker than Fenix's regular gait. He said the shaky-cam was just one of many cinematic tricks used in Gears. "The audience has 70-plus years of film-viewing experience, so they can pick up on filmic cues," Bleszinski said.

Some of the more interesting things about Bleszinski's speech were his descriptions of features that weren't included in Gears of War. One concept was called "combat cash," a system that would let players "scoop up the spoils of war" and buy new items on the battlefield--a system (again) reminiscent of Resident Evil 4's mysterious "What are ya buyin'?" merchant. After consideration, though, the lead cabal felt the feature would take away from the game's "pure action" dynamic.

The whole no-skin-showing Locust power-armor thing didn't go over well, either.
The whole no-skin-showing Locust power-armor thing didn't go over well, either.

Another system that didn't make the cut was the "morale meter." This system would have seen Fenix's squadmates become more and more disheartened the longer they were pinned down by Locust gunfire. If the group did not advance, a squad member would eventually "put a gun in his mouth." Again, the feature was cut, as the leads felt that it would be too disheartening for a player if his or her squad started committing mass suicide during an already tough level.

Lastly, Gears was also supposed to have a much more complex "Orders System" to let players direct their squads. "We realized we were not making Full Spectrum Warrior and felt that implementing too much [real-time strategy] would take away from the central action element," Bleszinski told the crowd.

I think it would be cool if they made a pre-qual where u fight with pheonix at aspien field and how he gets into jail. They can show how he met dom and joined the military and stuff. Also more background info on the locust. hahaha just an idea.

Great game. I don't understand why people say it had a bad story though. It was one of the best I've seen in a shooter.

I do believe that when they start the alpha stage of Gears 2, then They should definatly consider Diescription and just how vicious the Locust Queen really is.

All I know is that he forgot to let Carmine live. That was the greatest flaw in this game. Nah, it was, is and always will be great.

On multiplayer, take a hint from Ubisoft, and let people get achievements with friends. I got a real problem getting people to join my games, thus I don't think I ever even have the patience to get the Series of Tubes achievements (like seriously waiting 20 minutes to get one person in there and then have them leave right away? Lame). Also, ever since the update, I've been getting 9-10 games MAX to show up on my game browser. I'm pretty sure there's more matches going on than that in the middle of the day, so what gives with that?

I agree with trinifella, the multiplayer is almost perfect. Perhaps a few minor flaws. So they better leave it like that. What I do miss is some more game type's. Why didn't they include like some CTF or terretories. That would work beautifu l with gears multiplayer gameplay. And for GeOw 2, you can have my grandma and my 360 if they don´t create it. But we all know they will, and that´´s great.

MR. Cliffy B can do whatever he wants to single player, that's fine. But i pray that if anything was to change with multiplayer, it's well thought out. ONLINE IS INSANELY PERFECT!!!!! some more maps is all i need

Only that it feels unfinished since the game is so short and story, what, is there one?... They should have adapted that from RE4, that game is huge!! Mechanics are ok in gears. Haven't tried online.

Chris5551 said: "Hopefully there will be a cohesive story this time around. Gears was a good game but with the abscence of a real story, it just ended up being a really cool tech demo." How does not having a cool story make it a tech demo? That term is used for games that have great graphics and crappy gameplay. Anyway, other than Half-Life and a few others, when have FPS's ever had good stories?

I personally would have loved to see the morale meter. I think that seeing one of my "squadmates" kill himself after taking fire for to long would be just the kick in the ass i would need to chainsaw one of those S.O.Bs. One of the main reasons that i like gears is because it seems real. All aspects of the game play feel like an option that i would take if i were in that situation, so the "combat cash" would be something thats just not realistic. I personally can not wait until Gears 2 but one thing i would like is a "LONGER STORY"

Can't wait for the sequel,I'm hoping they don't only put new creatures, but a wider range of weapons, levels, and at least 2 new abilities. If you remember, that's what Halo 2 did to not feel the same as Halo 1 like the vehicle stealing, duel wielding, and improved graphics and multi-player/levels.It was a hit and that should be the asme with Gears 2,which by the time it came out,the number of 360 owners would have doubled. Then it would sell like 6 million copies in the time it took Gears 1 to sell 3 million.Let's see an improved rocket launcher, the Boomer launch kind of sucks the projectile arcs down.

you can find out why marcus is in prison and what happened on emergance day if u do basic back reading.... marcus is in prison because he went against a direct order to go save his father (hence his reaction when he has to go back to his fathers house) On emergance day it shows u in the cut scene at the begining that they scoreched the surface so the locusts could not live there. all the humans now live in a city on a granite mountain, where the locusts cannot break through the surface. a prequal would be a bad idea in my mind, its all about developing the story and moving forward, personally i wanna find out who that woman talking is and her motives

With any game, there are always things to be hidden, and found (eastereggs, glitches, cheats). Obviously not many people who have noticed the fact of "the woman speeking for the locust" is actually considered 2 things 1) the narrator and 2) the queen of the locusts. Im pretty sure I am not the only one who picked up on this and I sure as hell know that the people who have, know that General Ramm is a mere wuss when you think of who the queen could be. Plus general Ramm menchines the queen when you battle him near the end of the game. When marcus and dom confront General Ramm, the beefy crusty steak gives a radical choice for the hero and his friend but without an answer Ramm says "Serve the Queen!" in his raspy like voice. If indeed the gears of war hit is a trilogy, I am quite sure the developers might a) not introduce the queen till the third game or b) cameo the queen near the very end of gears of war 2. A lot of questions went unanswered at the end of Gears of war, so in order to not leave fans hanging, i can give a 90% chance that GOW 2 will eventually hit stores in 2009 if not rushed.

(Blueberrypie880) Well everyone knows enough about everything in the game. Marcus was in jail because he didn't follow orders. He went to save his dad instead of following his orders, only to see his father murdered by Raam (which is why he was pissed when he saw Raam befor Kim died). As Dom said before we saw the Stranded camp, he was looking for somebody. He lost his wife and before he assumes she's dead, he wants to try and find her. There isn't enough about Cole to care about. Ooooo! he played thrashball and became "Cole Train" #88! So interesting. I don't know jack-squat about Baird... other than the fact that he's the living Locust database. That's why everyone takes his advice... they may end up dead if they don't. I know that Hoffman was Marcus's field commander at Aspho Fields (when he was court-martialed). Other than that the only thing worthy of a prequel could be Halo Wars-esque, and have it as the early battles of the war... starting at E-Day of course.

totally agree! BB72691 I think that gears of war's length was perfect. All people that are complaining are stupid mostly because the length was to where you can play a quick mission with a friend before you go online. If it was to long it would be a pain in the ass. The length also didn't give the story to much time to reveal the entire history of Fenix. I'm really hoping that Gears of War will have a prequel explaining why Fenix is in jail and a little more back story. Then they should come out with a sequel to finish the story. They could probably take this Franchise farther then Halo will ever be able to do.

Epic, I love the world that you created for Gears, and the whole backdrop of things. My only issue is that we didn't get more story, cause honestly, even the bit of story we got was awesome. If anything, a prequel would be perfect... As Marcus is lifted to safety to the King Raven, he could close his eyes and a flashback would ensue. It might not progress the story forward, but there are more then enough people who are itching to know about Marcus' back, and how exactly the Locust invasion was dealth with at first.

I don't get why people complain about Gears' length. I felt it was perfectly fine at Hardcore difficulty... I don't need my action games to be longer than my RPGs. As for morale... I would have had a heart attack if I didn't have help because my people killed themselves... That'd ruin the game...
