Now Playing: GS News Update: GameStop Expecting New Console Announcements at E3

Speaking today during GameStop's latest earnings briefing, COO Tony Bartel said the retailer is expecting new consoles to be announced at E3 2016.

He didn't say if they'll come from Microsoft or Sony, but rumors and reports claim that both companies have new hardware in the works that could be announced during the annual show.

"We expect E3 to focus on key titles in the back half of the year and console announcements," he said. "We also expect VR to generate significant gaming consumer and press interest."

On the subject of virtual reality, Bartel said he expects GameStop to be a major player in selling headsets, including this October's PlayStation VR.

GameStop management also confirmed today that, while it is expecting new console announcement at E3, presumably from Microsoft and Sony, the company is not yet modeling any sales projections into its business outlook.

The same is true for Nintendo's NX, which is scheduled to come out in March 2017. A slide from the company's briefing today does, however, include a look at how meaningful NX sales could be based on the performance of past Nintendo consoles. Take a look:

Microsoft is reportedly working on two new Xbox One consoles, one of which is apparently a slimmed-down model that could be announced at E3. Looking further out, reports claim Microsoft is also working on an Xbox One system that is four times as powerful as the current one.

As for Sony, it is reportedly working on a more powerful version of the PlayStation 4. Keep checking back with GameSpot for more on E3 2016 in the days and weeks ahead.

i have a PC and i love it i have always used one and i always will well until they stop making them of course than i will be forced to buy laptops which i can't stand. and i'm a console guy i've never been able to get into PC games but to each their own. as for my 3 years out of date info i'm okay with that i wasn't sure how old that was to be honest anyways.

@walidras: no, pc will still give you a headache for various other reasons. some people are console people in the same way some people are cat people.

This really is about VR and the new AMD Polaris GPUs are coming out later this year using a 14nm process.

Microsoft and Sony could have paid AMD an insane amount of money to keep their chips using 28nm coming, but they opted to just piggyback on AMD and save money by moving towards 14nm.

The new process allows the chips to be far faster, so at least Sony decided to make them faster, which lead to a the whole PlayStation 4.5 thing. I would assume Microsoft will do the same thing.

Going forward, anytime that AMD or NVidia do a die-shrink then new consoles will come out.

So, new consoles will probably come out every 3 or so years now.

@bassfrek1987: PS2 and PS3 both had "die shrink" versions of their chips, which made them run cooler and use less electricity (especially the PS3, as the Slim then Super-Slim dramatically reduced power usage), but neither had any performance bump.

no console is coming out that is 4x the current specs... at least not in the next calendar year. who believes this rubbish? a simple cost estimate of the hardware would put that console outside of a reasonable price point and would be a colossal failure as history has shown us.

" Gamestop expects new console announcements at E3" - They're super smart to be predicting this, it's only been in the talks for the last several months....i mean who would've thought.

does Microsoft really need to do 2 NEW consoles? i get the slim down console for the X Bone that i get cause they've done that in the past and so has Sony and Nintendo as well so that's nothing new. but 2 of them why? as for Sony i wonder if it's true that AMD or whatever the hell i read is true where they were forced more or less into doing an updated version of it? and if that is false and it's only so the VR can hook up to the PS4 than that's still stupid. i will laugh my ass off if that turns out to be a flop though.

this many new consoles is just to many. how are you suppose to make a profit of your current system if you put out a complete new one? i've been playing games since the 80's back in the NES days so looking at graphics today just amazes me how far we've come since the pixel days on hell even the 2600. i never did own one of those though, anyways that's just to much shit on the market and i don't own an X bone but most people think the PS4 from my understanding anyways from the videos i watched on you tube a lot of it has to do with Sony paying more attention to it being a gaming console and yeah it's got other shit on it too don't get me wrong. but

than you have the X Bone that pays more attention to the tv shows and movies and music and it just happens to be a console. now if they pay more attention to the area of gaming and less of what tv shows are on it cause we have DISH why in the hell would i need a X Bone to watch tv when we have that? who knows i may have all this wrong but if i'm right this is just how i feel about it.

@wildhoney66: also been playing games since the 80's, your information is accurate but it's about 3 years out of date, the ps4 and Xbox one (or x bone as you described it 4 times) are basically the same console. I own them both and they are both kinda flawed and I'm wishing I only picked up 1 of them, I'll pick up any new consoles that come out as I always have, by release it'll be 4 years for this cycle which is a good amount of time to move on a generation in my opinion.

@louixiii: and thanks to that and this move that sony is gonna make, I am gonna buy a new gen console only when they announce an upgraded one, and even if that's announced I'm gonna wait until maybe they'll upgrade that crap too. So basically gonna wait for a new console announcement after a new console releases before buying.

@battlestreak: so why are you complaining? You have a reasonable pc, consoles don't match that in specs, who cares? It's about games right? Look at uncharted 4, it's awesome.

    Avatar image for battlestreak

@mickpunx: Hell yeah, it's about the games. But you have to admit, the consoles are too underpowered. It's pathetic to see games running at 900p and 30FPS in 2016. It's not all about performance, but it's still sad.

Doubt these "new consoles" will be the next gen. If they are then it would pretty much confirm that the current generation is the biggest failure of all time.

Even so, based on what we have now I'm not even remotely excited for a next gen. Sony and MS basically destroyed my confidence in the console market and I'm 100% PC until they do something interesting in that sphere.

    I won't hold my breath.

--the second I saw that humongous monstrosity of an xb1
--i had no doubt they 'made it so big'(leaving tons of room for shrinking the unit)
--so when they dropped their slim models
--whoever owned an xb1 would feel a great desire to own one

--i havent pulled my xb1 back out of it's box in my closet
--since I finished my 25 hrs at titanfail
    --so
--the new xb1(slim) could be smaller than an iphone
--and it would still be as useless to me as a wiiU(which I actually played for 3 hrs this year on mario maker)

"so when they dropped their slim models

whoever owned an xb1 would feel a great desire to own one"

Ummm no I'm good (if a slimmed down model has the same specs sans the obvious HDD upgrade).

It stays in the house, it doesn't have RROD like my slimmer 360 used to have. I can easily upgrade to 5TB of storage whenever I want.

^ So....... , if it's not a significant HW upgrade why would I "have the desire" to upgrade again?

BTW do you go out of your way to buy slim down PCs?...

This gen was over in a flash. Looks like Sony and MS were scared to death by the NX beast so they decide to boost their own consoles but it's not going to matter - NX is an unstoppable force that will trample everything in its path!

    Avatar image for Barighm
    Barighm

@Moonco: It's the VR thing. Everyone is jumping on it, but only PC's can handle it. But this is silly since something like less than 5% of all PCs out there are VR capable, and there aren't many VR games yet. They should just wait a couple years and put out a fully upgraded generation so at least this gen feels like a complete one.

@Barighm: You are forggeting that new VR beast graphics cards are on the way at less cost, from Nvidia and AMD for consoles and pc´s.

In the next two years both new consoles and pc´s will be able to run games and VR at maximum quality.
