GameStop Almost Sells Through Its Xbox One X Supply In First 24 Hours

The US retailer almost sold a lot of Xbox One X consoles on the first day.

[UPDATE] GameStop released a statement regarding its first-day Xbox One X sales, confirming that they are getting more units from Microsoft soon.

"Sales of the new Xbox One X have been incredible! We have sold through most of our initial allotment in just one day," GameStop SVP of merchandising Bob Puzon said. "We are already working with Microsoft to get our hands on more of the world's most powerful video game console!"

The original story is below.

Retailer GameStop sold nearly all of its Xbox One X stock on launch day, November 7, the store has announced, according to The Wall Street Journal. As WSJ mentions, GameStop did not say how many units its sold, which is a critical detail.

Retailers don't want to be stuck with excess stock, so it's possible GameStop requested a conservative number of units, though we don't know for sure. Not having units to sell puts GameStop in an unfortunate situation in the short-term, but the company will surely receive more shipments. And in the meantime, it creates the feeling of scarcity, which could in turn create more interest in the new console.

As mentioned, GameStop's Xbox One X stock is not completely sold through. You can still order the $500 console through GameStop's website, though in-store availability may vary.

GameStop will report earnings next on Tuesday, November 21, at which time the retailer may discuss Xbox One X sales and more. We will report back with more details as they are announced.

GameSpot's Xbox One X review called it a "future-proof Xbox for 4K and HDR." Reviewer Jimmy Thang said, "While the Xbox One X is an expensive box, from a hardware standpoint, you're getting a very powerful and capable machine. You'll be hard pressed to build a comparably powerful PC for $500. On top of that, you get a 4K HDR Blu-ray player, which can cost several hundred dollars on its own."

Will there be EXCLUSIVE games for it , that don't exist on Any other platform, to TRULY take advantage of its power? Or will it be just like the rest? Games will be made with lesser powerful consoles in mind that literally hold back its true capabities?

@nyran125tk: what I mean is will there be games created from the GROUND UP, to fully utilize the complete power of the hardware ? Not just lighting and texture tweaks. Because there is difference. Look at Crysis on PC , when it was exclusive. For its time. Its was mind blowing. Because it utilized the powerful hardware of the PC, for its day..when Crysis 2 came along it was nowhere near the level graphically as Crysis on PC in that time period. It had to be scaled back to meet the console requirements with just a few slight added texture updates for just the PC version, to make it look better. Will games be created solely from ground up, to completely maximize the consoles hardware in all its glory?

@Thanatos2k:

Im sorry, go watch all the DF comparisons of Shadow of war, Diablo, Tomb Raider, and so many other games that have been CRUSHED by the Xbox One X compared to PS4 pro.

Whats true is that all the BIG AAA multiplats will be hugely better on Xbox and you fail to see that most people like me own both systems and will enjoy PlayStation exclusives and the best multiplat performance on X.

Also, go see the X in real life. The visuals are so damn good. Im replaying Gears of War because of how stunning it looks now

@wayneextremity: Doesn't make the game better, or the outcome any different though. So what's the point, what are you gaining? If a game sucks if will just suck at a higher resolution.

I have a PC. If I want to see "damn good" visuals I run the games there.

@Thanatos2k: Look, Ive got a PC too.

But a lot of people cant afford 4K capable PC's. And no, you cant build a PC with X specs for 500. Not yet. Dont give me the used Tower argument, that makes zero sense considering the X comes with a 4K blu ray player and does offer 4K or near 4K visuals for most games. Ive gone through enough broken ports to know im getting a majority of multiplats on console. A GTX 1080 still cant hold true 4K 30 on many modern games with a stable frame rate. Im tired of the tweaking

@Thanatos2k: By the way on a side note, the critics here can’t claim that the X1X is “too expensive” out of one side of their mouths while simultaneously suggesting that everyone just “buy a PC” out of the other side.

To more directly respond to your earlier point though, I have a gaming PC as well (a high-end Falcon Northwest Mach V), but I spend most of my time on the Xbox One (and now the Xbox One X). My Falcon gets used primarily for games that just don’t work well logistically on a console, such as flight sims and real-time strategy games. Everything else, though, is infinitely better on console, especially now with the advent of the One X. The reason is simple: My PC lives on a desk attached to a relatively small monitor, while my One X is driving my brand-new 4K HDR 65” Sony X930E and pumping sound through my extremely capable surround sound system. And, I get to play in a comfy recliner instead of an office chair.

I know, the inevitable response will be, “You can connect your PC to your TV and surround system and use an Xbox controller with it”, but let’s get real: How many people do you really believe will do that when to do so would mean seriously compromising the PC’s non-gaming uses (are you really going to put a keyboard and mouse in your lap?), or alternatively would constantly move their PC between the living room and the desk? My estimation is that the number of people who actually do either is pretty close to zero.

So if you want to game with admittedly even better visuals (though very marginally compared to X1X), spend much more for the privilege, and do so on a small monitor sitting in an office chair, then go right ahead. But for 99% of real folks out there the far better option is a console, and for me at least the X1X is a no-brainer as the best console choice (though that question admittedly depends upon what each individual values most - in my case Xbox has the games I want to play, and X1X takes them to a whole other level).

@Logan303: It's too expensive compared to other consoles. But if money is not a concern, you should be getting a PC. It's a simple argument.

"How many people do you really believe will do that when to do so would mean seriously compromising the PC’s non-gaming use"

Is this a joke or something?

@Thanatos2k: Was that a feeble attempt at an answer or something?

I have both a highly-capable PC and an Xbox One X, so I know what I’m talking about. Your “response” was merely another question. FYI: Answering a question with a question is nothing more than an attempt to avoid the original question. How about sharing more of your “insight?”

@Thanatos2k: Look, theyre microsoft exclusives. You wont see PUBG on other consoles til end of next year. You wont see Cuphead, Gears of War 4, Halo, Forza 7, and all those games as microsoft exclusives still bring the money back into the Xbox division. No matter how much you want to smack talk a great console that KILLS other console tech in the market, you cant play the mentioned games without paying Microsoft on ether PC or Xbox.

Also, third party games matter more. For people who cant afford big gaming rigs, on console, Xbox One X will be the best choice until the next xbox releases.

Also, very sure MS will NEVER let Playstation have a tech advantage again for the next few generations.

@wayneextremity: @wayneextremity: Yes, but they still are creating games with the lowest denominator in mind aren't they? You say Shadow Of War and even Diablo 3, they are just adding nicer lighting textures etc aren't they? None of those games are specifically designed from the ground up with ONLY Xbox One X hardware exclusively in mind. Like for example if the create a Madden. Its not going to be a Madden exclusively created to fully maximise just the Xbox one x. They have to think about the Xbox one. The original Ps4 etc. They are not just creating just an Xbox one x version. Maybe they will. Hopefully they will.

@nyran125tk: I think the business model from here on out will be that the latest greatest console tech, e.g., the Xbox One X, will initially occupy the top of the line, will be aimed primarily at enthusiasts, and will offer enhancements to existing games for a premium price. However, over time premium consoles like the X1X will naturally drift downward in the lineup as they are replaced at the top by even more capable hardware, and at that point the X1X’s of the world WILL get software designed to fully exploit their capabilities, while the new top of the line units merely enhance those games further.

I think this is a good thing. It steadily moves the baseline capability of the hardware upward over time, while providing access to enhanced capabilities, for those who value that, earlier than would have otherwise occurred in the old, static “hardware generation” model.

This new model provides something for everyone. I like it.

Not that this dose of common sense will do anything, of course, to stop the PC supremacists and the PlayStation defenders from trying to dump on the Xbox One X. It’s odd to me that those who shout the loudest about their hardware choice being superior also tend to be those who spend the most time trying to run down others’ choices, when one would think they would instead want to spend as much time as possible with their “master race” PCs or their “better exclusives” on their PlayStations.

I just don’t get that. But then, I’m not immaturely obsessed with which plastic box someone else chooses to purchase.

@Logan303: PC gamers are already willing to spend more than the price of a console, so of course the specs are going to crush it.

The X also doesn't support 1440p or any resolution between 1080p and 2160p such as ultra wide resolutions. If you have a monitor better than 1080p but not 2160p, you don't have the option to run at the sweet spot where it looks better than 1080p but runs smoother than 2160p.

There are several GPUs out there that do more than the 6 TFLOPs of the X. If you don't have a 4K display, you can utilize the extra horse power to make it look better than the 1080p you can get from the X. Framerates are not locked by the dev to 30 or 60, you can get 120+ on any hardware from the last few years. No console is going to give you more than 60 fps.

I took mine back to Wal Mart because I did NOT see any significant difference, at least not a 500$ one. So I'll stick with the S and my PS4. Good for people who bought one, I just think they will bore of it quickly.

My brother works there and said before they implemented the time limit people were bringing back 10 year old TV’s. One guy returned a microwave he had for 18 years. All you need is your receipt.

I got lucky that they had 2 at one of the like 8 Wal Marts around here. So since I knew I could take it back, and wouldn't have to haggle with any online garbage I went for it. Pretty impressive, and quiet. Just not what I expected really. Of course many didn't know what to expect? lol Did you get one?? :)

How much is "most"?

As article says, we don't know how many they ordered from Microsoft in the first place, so it's possible they made a conservative order. But even if they did, they didn't sell all of them. We don't even know if they sold 80 or 90% of their stock. "Most of our initial allotment" is very vague.

I saw maybe 15 pre-order Xbox One Xs in a Best Buy, in the Customer Service section, waiting to be picked up the day of. None were on the floor. This was in California. I have to say that's pretty good for a $500 console.
