[UPDATE] GameStop released a statement regarding its first-day Xbox One X sales, confirming that they are getting more units from Microsoft soon.

"Sales of the new Xbox One X have been incredible! We have sold through most of our initial allotment in just one day," GameStop SVP of merchandising Bob Puzon said. "We are already working with Microsoft to get our hands on more of the world's most powerful video game console!"

Now Playing: Xbox One X Video Review

The original story is below.

Retailer GameStop sold nearly all of its Xbox One X stock on launch day, November 7, the store has announced, according to The Wall Street Journal. As WSJ mentions, GameStop did not say how many units its sold, which is a critical detail.

Retailers don't want to be stuck with excess stock, so it's possible GameStop requested a conservative number of units, though we don't know for sure. Not having units to sell puts GameStop in an unfortunate situation in the short-term, but the company will surely receive more shipments. And in the meantime, it creates the feeling of scarcity, which could in turn create more interest in the new console.

As mentioned, GameStop's Xbox One X stock is not completely sold through. You can still order the $500 console through GameStop's website, though in-store availability may vary.

GameStop will report earnings next on Tuesday, November 21, at which time the retailer may discuss Xbox One X sales and more. We will report back with more details as they are announced.

GameSpot's Xbox One X review called it a "future-proof Xbox for 4K and HDR." Reviewer Jimmy Thang said, "While the Xbox One X is an expensive box, from a hardware standpoint, you're getting a very powerful and capable machine. You'll be hard pressed to build a comparably powerful PC for $500. On top of that, you get a 4K HDR Blu-ray player, which can cost several hundred dollars on its own."

@javy: Both statements are true though. Everything on Xbox is on PC and if you have a powerful enough rig, it runs even better. Just because they're xbox haters doesn't mean they're wrong.

@javy: Difference on that last line is Xbox is actually competent at gaming. Can't say the same for the clown administration, and what their role is!

@javy: Actually I own the Scorpio edition and honestly yeah Microsoft does have a major exclusive problem this gen, less and less new IPs each year since launch. I hope Phil takes this serious and insures what ever new studios they acquire is hard and fast on producing more new IPs to represent the Xbox brand. It is a problem that any true gamer should be aware of. As for fanboys yeah to hell with them.

@legendaryh1tman: I can't see that happening. They've canceled more games than created new IPs. Scalebound would have been a new IP, but we won't get it now, and Microsoft said it was a good thing that we won't. Which rubs some salt into Platinum's wounds.

@legendaryh1tman: They don't have exclusives and I have both systems as well. It's a glorified 360, and Microsoft are living in the past relying on the same IP's they've had forever. Not sure how anyone can call enhancing an existing library "progress". Unlike Nintendo, and Sony who sell millions more because they want to have their own unique set of games you can't get anywhere else. It's called competition. If everyone played all the same games on every console there would be no need for different platforms. That's the whole POINT. We'd be playing Mario and Uncharted on PC and Xbox. Umm nah. Also the guys at Digital Foundry would be out of a job.lol

@x1xclutchx8x: There is more innovation and refreshing ideas in each iteration of Mario than there has been in every iteration of Halo or Gears.

They may rely on familiar names and faces, but these ideas are constantly being recreated. Halo is still just Halo, Gears is still just Gears.

Final Fantasy is still going because they were clever enough to make them an anthology of stories rather than one, long, continuing series. Same can be said for Mario and Zelda, each game can exist on its own.

@x1xclutchx8x: Indeed but those are GOOD/GREAT, legendary games. I'm 42, so I was around when the first NES came out. Now THAT was innovation. Especially Duck Hunt (with the gun) HA! Good times.

They're actually relying on even fewer IPs than in the past because there used to be a Fable to go with their trifecta of Gears, Halo and Forza. But now Fable is no longer a thing.

In other news...

-The LA Dodgers NEARLY won the world series

-The Atlanta Falcons NEARLY won Superbowl 51

-The Cleveland Browns NEARLY won a game this year

Other than that some things actually did happen but you wouldn't care about that

@sellingthings: Exactly...

Reminds me of a passage/quote from a mid-twentieth-century American poet Archibald MacLeish. PM me if you are curious to the passage, it is one of my favorites. Some of his work is not as easy to find on the internet as other poets.

Makes sense. GameStop had a decent trade in promotion for the OneX so I would expect consumers to go there and save a little.

Guess it depends on how many they had but just being released this doesn't seem like great news. I got mine and love it personally so thats all I care about.

So far I'm really liking the X... as far as "future proof" goes... that's ridiculous. There's plenty of work to be done in console sector before those words can be tossed around.

@khanwashere: future proof doesn't mean infinitely useable. It means for the next 2-3 hardware iterations from Microsoft it will continue to be supported for new game releases, albeit with reduced graphical settings. It just means if you choose not to upgrade for 10 years you'll still be able to get new games.

@khanwashere: there really is no "future proof" because of how rapidly technology evolves and improves. It's only a matter of time (I'll give it 2 years) before people are talking about the OneX having limited hardware capabilities. Some PC gamers are already talking like the OneX is no big deal.

@scottyp360: That's because the PC gamers are right. Before Coffee Lake was revealed, you could call the 1X mid-tier, but after the announcement it's more like low-tier. Its GPU compares to a 1060, which is all right, but all it takes is one more step before that becomes mid-low tier. Where the X1 shines is in its RAM which the console uses to boost its execution capability. It's certainly not bad for its price, but for the same amount of money plus like $100 or so you can do what I did and build a PC that has like double the capability. Or buy a Switch and a few games.

@Barighm: Which 600 buck pc has "twice" the capability of the x1x? A 1080ti based rig is not twice as powerful, and that would set you back $800 for the card alone.

I get that pc gamers need to justify their purchases, but at least stay within the realms of reality when doing so.

@Barighm: For 600 dollars you didn't build a PC with double the capability of the X1X because it's about 250 for a 4K Blu-ray optical drive maybe a grand for double the x1x but not 600, don't fool yourself or others.

@droogiecylon: there is still the question of how well will the console sell. Having a big launch day isnt surprising, most new console sell well at launch, but I'm curious how it will do going forward. Will it continue to sell well after the holiday season? How will it do months from now? This is what will determine whether on not the OneX is a success.

What the X does have going for it is that it should be the go to console for people that currently own 4KTVs and once more and more people buy 4ktvs the OneX could/should continue to sell well.

ALMOST... OK

Just how much system did that retail chain get and how much carried in there old xbox to get discount on the new system (which would be the smarter move)...

Impressive system but @ $500 for a mid-up isn't a thing for me.. This smells like ps3 mistake again, but at least that system was a new generation...

I'm waiting for Sony to cut the base ps4 model and just have the pro selling at 250 and the slim 150.. then i'll know ps5 is close and start saving for true next gen 4k console... AND if MS can get there game act together i'll buy there next gen system but i'll pass on this 500 mid-up..

@Thanatos2k: did the Pro? Answer: No.
Mid-generation consoles aren't likely to sell out. The existing player-base will overall be fine with the system they already have.
